Growing Plants inside enclosures
I have aspirations of creating some display-type setups for some of my reptiles and have been looking over some indoor plant care sites, but I really can't find anything good on growing plants in vivariums other than some vague info in a book and few magazine articles.
For those of you that have a green thumb, would you have any recommendations for hardy plantlife for the indoors?
Do you have any specific lighting that you would recommend and good suppliers of indoor planting goods?
Also, what are all of your opinions on putting live plans in an enclosure with animals?
Re: Growing Plants inside enclosures
i'd probably stay away from cacti

Cacti aren't even a consideration for reptile enclosures. I was looking mainly into grasses and ground creeping vines.
LMAO...but it really does not matter what type of plant it is...it won't last a week in my care ;)
Re: Growing Plants inside enclosures
pothos, english ivy, chinese evergreen, etc. I've had planted enclosures for my amphibians, and small geckoes, and think if youre willing to put the time in you may as well try it

LMAO......I used Pothos in my chameleon enclosure......it dried out and died two days later ;)
I have the green thumb of death when it comes to plants. Any recommendations to sites about care of indoor plants or plants that can be exposed to 80+deg weather constantly would be helpful too ;)
Re: Growing Plants inside enclosures
Use silk. They can't die.
But if you are dead set of live plants, pothos is a good choice. I had a viquarium that stayed around 80ish all the time. If the pothos are kep well watered and misted once a day..it'll do fine and grow like crazy.

Thanks. I might go ahead and give it a shot again.
Re: Growing Plants inside enclosures
If you killed a pothos, than I don't think anything will work for you. :confuzd:
Most likely the pothos you had was not very well rooted.
I use amix of tropicals in my frog tanks. The trick I found is to be sure to keep the humidity up. (i use glass covers). I also use florescent bulbs and this keeps the heat from getting to high.

I can't remember off hand what we used in my wife's red-eye tree frog enclosure but its thriving very well. We used a sphagnum moss substrate which is working out very well. I will have to ask her what it is, we researched on plants that where ok to use with the frogs...simple green leafy plant (LOL)
Re: Growing Plants inside enclosures
hey daniel if you need some growing plants in an enclosure advice then you should take a look at the book "the art of keeping snakes" by philippe de vosjoli.
most likely you have already heard of this book if not even read it but it has some pretty good information on keeping plants and animals alive together.
Re: Growing Plants inside enclosures
I have read that book several times. Good read....but not a large amount of info on caring for the plants specifically.
....That is one of the resources that I used at my first two attempt to grow plants inside enclosures.....both failed miserably....I was wondering if there was anything else out there ;) Thanks.
Re: Growing Plants inside enclosures
hahahaha you are a plant killer daniel... but hey, silk plants don't die :P
Re: Growing Plants inside enclosures
for a while i used coco fibre mixed with potting soil in bp and chameleon enclosures and my plants grew well until i re-potted them and are still alive today.
plants need water once in a while maybe thats the problem...
Re: Growing Plants inside enclosures
I was considering putting some live plants in the tank and wasn't sure if there were any plants ( besides the obvious cactus or prickley/sharp stuff) to stay away from. I saw a few red leafy plants I liked. I love red. Maybe like suggested I will go for silk...
