Is This Normal?
I picked up Auryn last night from NERD and I put him into his new home to settle in. As per Kara's advice--I turned his warm side hide into a humid hide with sphagnum moss.
Last night, Auryn was crawling all over the place, checking things out--and that's completely understandable, so I didn't worry.
This morning, I woke up, hoping he would have discovered his hides and that they're good to hide in, but instead he's wedged between his water bowl and just behind the Accurite. I'm using KRAFT paper as substrate--and the ends are a bit long, so they curl over a little. It makes the place he is -almost- like a hide...

He's just hunkered back there--no way to tell if he's sleeping. I'm a first-time BP mom, so I'm going to be paranoid about every little thing until I think he's a-okay.
In case you needed to know: Temps are 81 cool/ 91 warm, Humidity's up at 64%, which is a little high, but I need to wait for a week to bug Auryn again, and I -don't- want to solder more holes in his tub while he's in it!
Is what he's doing normal for a BP who's having his first night/morning in a new place?

Re: Is This Normal?
Cute!! He will find his hides, it is only his first day/ morning and night with you, so he will be fine. My ball exsplored for the first day she was here, then she went on into her hides.

Re: Is This Normal?
Yea they will find thier own spot to feel safe in sometimes.Think about them being a kid doing things how they want not how the parents(Mom AKA you lol) prefere things being done.:P

Re: Is This Normal?
The humidity is fine for now. Not too high to worry about. And he'll find his hides eventually. It can take a couple days sometimes.

Re: Is This Normal?
Sounds just like a normal thing for any snake to be doing. He'll sort it out in time. I know Mikey's new snake Buddy took a few days to decide he liked the hides we have here and settle in but now he's busy peeking out of the entrance hole just like the rest of the 06's. Sometimes they just laze about near their hides too. Lots of ours do that but will also use the hide when they feel like it. As long as his temps are fine, he'll do what works for him. :)

Re: Is This Normal?
Thanks, guys :) That's a relief for me--I just want to make sure that he's as happy and as comfortable as he could be. I e-mailed Kara and she reminded me that he's been living in a shoe-box sized enclosure since he was a baby, and it's his first time having more space.
I just caught him taking a drink of water--so it looks like he's awake :) He had been in that same position in the pictures since I woke up at about 8:30.
 @ all of you :sunny:

Re: Is This Normal?
hahahahaha! this is so fun being first time snake moms together :D
mine did something similar. he's decided that being wedged behind the hide in the tub corner is far better than either of the hides....just like a BOY!!!!!!
I gotta go check on him soon....he looked this morning like he was working on a poop. oh what fun! :rolleye2:

Re: Is This Normal?
Well, yesterday and today/tonight, Auryn's been doing more of the same. He was asleep in the same corner, wedged between the waterbowl and the wall of the tub this morning. He spent this evening pushing his tubs around and climbing on everything.
He seems to be testing boundaries--touching his nose to the plastic walls and the top of the tub, flicking his tongue. He still hasn't actually settled into any hides yet.
I have caught him "watching" me a few times. His enclosure's right behind my computer and next to my bed, and while I was sitting on my bed today at different times or I turned from my PC to look in on him, he's watching me. At least, I think he is. I guess I'm just a big heat signature he's not too sure about yet.
Just thought I'd update :)

Re: Is This Normal?
Everything sounds really normal.
When I first got Fluffy last year I covered the sides of the tub (on the outside) with paper so that he couldn't look out. Then I left a little portion without paper so that I could look in and check him out. The first week is the hardest for the owner and combatting your urge to take him out of the tub, make friends and take a million pics of him. Be strong! :sunny:
and ... Congratulations! :P

Re: Is This Normal?
must...resist..........!!!!! Must....not..........pinch little cheeks!
mine has reclaimed his hide. he ventures out at night but I have not caught him in the act :( I have spied on him a couple times but he's too smart for little old me :colbert:
I gather that a sleeping snake (in the daytime) is a happy snake, so I assume things are going well for you
how are you spying on yours to see him moving around? red light? other method?

Re: Is This Normal?
Good to see you are observational and concerned about your new baby. :)
I wouldn't worry about this though, I'm sure when he wants to be in his hides he will be. With a lot of the babies I had hatch for me last year, some really preferred being in their hides and others felt okay hanging out in a more open area.

He's living in a tub, so it's see-through. And he lives in my room, and I'm in my room a good portion of the late afternoon--evening. So when he's being active and exploring, he's very visible.
This is also the third morning he's been here, and I've found him asleep in the same corner every morning :)
He thinks his hides are for pushing around and climbing on top of at night, instead of hiding in.

Re: Is This Normal?
so cute!
I found mine on top of his hide this morning before dawn
unfortunately I didn't see him until I opened the tub to change his water
I am not sure who was the more surprised....him or me!
anyway, gonna start thawing a mouse today and give the zombie mouse dance a try tomorrow
I wish mine was in a more central location so I could see him doing stuff...I check on him often but it sounds so cool that you can observe for long periods of time~!

Auryn Found A New Hide
Well, this morning when I woke up, I fully expected the boy to be sleeping in his (so far) "usual" corner--cool side between tub wall & water bowl.
Instead, he's decided that the bestest place to sleep and hide -ever- is under the KRAFT paper. :) He's so cute.

Re: Auryn Found A New Hide
lol how cute!! it's normal for them to do that since they feel most secure when something is touching all their sides.my baby blood sometimes likes to go under her newspaper for a while.

Re: Is This Normal?
cute!
maybe you could try putting a smaller hide in there to see if he likes it better
mine seems to prefer the way-too-small-hide that is so small that when he coils under it he lifts it right off the floor. it's more of a hat than a hide :8:
