Quitting Smoking: Day 1
Well I managed my first 24 hours of quitting smoking. And boy was it a long day! They say the first 3 days are the hardest, but I've been ready for a long time now.
So for those of you that quit, was the 3 day thing true? Was it easier after that?

Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1
here's some good news for ya. my hubby smoked for 35 years... and he quit cause he wanted to date me :D so that's 9 years ago and his lungs are 100% healed from smoking! we know this cause he's part of a cancer study and they do mega tests on him... and he's equal to a non-smoker.
so that'll keep you on the track of quitting i hope!

Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1
I smoked for 5 years, and I didn't find it too difficult to quit once I was ready. I just had to be sure that anything involved with smoking that I owned was gone. Good decision, and good luck!! The first few days are definitely the hardest!

Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1
It'll be 5 years for me this coming Feb 17th. But my story is kind of unique, I was flat on my back with a very nasty case of the flue. I couldn't get out of bed for over a week. At first I was craving a cigarette but I had such a fever and nausea that I couldn't even get out of bed. I kept thinking about smoking so much that I guess I soon came to equate feeling sick with smoking and the thought of having a cigarette made me nauseous. That feeling lasted long after I was back on my feet again and I haven't had a cigarette since.
Never underestimate the powers of negative reinforcement.
:puke2::sick:

Good luck.

Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1
I tried to quit about 2 years ago. I made it a few weeks. Made the stupid mistake of starting again. Long story. Anyway, it does get easier and easier. I promise. Especially if you go cold turkey. Find your triggers and stay away/avoid them if possible. Drink lots of water. Remember what your health was and how much better you are feeling. You will taste food like never before lol. You will be able to breath so much better. SOmething that worked great for me was taking walks.
Good Luck and don't give up!!! Try going to www.quitnet.com there are a lot of helpful things there.

Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1
I know I'll make it, but the headaches suck (coffee seems to help with those). Just looking forward to being able to smell again :).
Kristy, you from Coeur D'Alene? I live in Lewiston ;) small world.

Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1
3 days was hard, 3 months was hard....
I couldn't really tell you when it got easier, but after 20 years, I was ready, too!
I do know that now, 3 years later, I am able to be around smoke without even thinking I want to smoke, but I still have about 1 dream a month that I'm smoking in.
It took me several false starts, but you won't regret quitting once you get the hang of being a non-smoker!

Agree 100%; I have been smoking 1 pack a day (some days even 2) for 24 years and quit Aug 2005; it was the best thing I did to myself and people living around me.
Good luck

Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1
I quit about a month ago, and although it was my third attempt...this time I really did it. It was a little difficult at first, mostly just when i'm out at the bars, but besides that it hasn't bothered me to much.
Congratulations!
By the way to all of you who have been done for years. Do those occasional cravings ever go away?

Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1
The cravings become fewer and farther between, and much less powerful. Every once in a while, I'll get a craving, but I have to think about it before I even realize what it is I'm craving. Then I can just laugh it off.

Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1
goodluck on quitting! the first three days are hard but wait a few months until you get an out of nowhere craving... man those will make you go nuts for a smoke. after a few months of not smoking i would get some hardcore cravings. i would watch some actor on t.v have a cigarette and imagine how good that must be...
but fight it! its so much better to be a non smoker! you get your energy back and you can breathe properly again. waaay healthier!
goodluck! its hard but its worth it!

hahah you e-mail just gave me a out of nowhere craving talking about how awesome it would be. i have been quit for 2years now and it is awesome. just think of all the money you can put towards herps now.
the #1 way to quit is to just not go buy more. hhahahahah. i know it is common sence. but just keep thinking about not buying more and the days will fly bye. you should also think about painting your house or washing the car from front to back. i know a lot of people that start running and if you are a out of shape smoker the last thing you want after a 2-3 mile jog is a cig.

Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1
Good luck! Longest I could go was a month, then it just got to be too much for me. Last time I tried quitting I was a good 32 days into quitting, I was watching secret window, and when Johnny Depp busted out a pack and lit one up, I found myself heading to the store for some...
