wish me luck -interview
I have interview Friday! An opportunity floated my way for a position at a company here in the same town I work currently. I'm really excited the salary is WAY higher but what's more important to me is I would be doing the level of IT work I would like to be doing and have more challenges. The position is Network Engineer and with a company who works with alloy materials and castings.

Good luck! :) My boyfriend's ultimate career goal is Network Engineer! He's going in for another Cisco cert in February--and wants to take the last one--the CCIE by the end of the year. He says it's really hard, and expects to take it a few times ;) He's currently working the the NOC for Aetna.

Re: wish me luck -interview
Best of luck to ya! hope you get the job. I actually work for a Company that manuefactures and distributes networking products. Routers, switches, patch cables and ect,... www.icintracom.com
I'm not too much of a network guru myself but it's definitely a great business to be in! ;)

Re: wish me luck -interview
Heath, when you hit the big times and start making 6 figures..can i have a dollar?
-
Re: wish me luck -interview
Nate, I'll mail you a dollar but I'm taking the postage cost out of it!
The salary range I was told today wasn't 6 digits but its definitely on the downward slide towards it!
-
Re: wish me luck -interview
I wish you luck in getting the job! How exciting!

Re: wish me luck -interview
more thanks to everyone! This is really the "step up" I need, I've gotten to the point where work is just that...a daily grind. The majority of the time now I'm away from the other guys who helped make it fun.
Anyway any last minute tips? I've interviewed plenty but I won't spat at any simple reminders! I tweaked and updated my portfolio so that should be good to go. After hearing the salary range yesterday I decided I needed to go all out and get a sport coat/suit jacket whatever you want to call them :P I went out to an S&K at lunch and a lady talked me into a jacket and matching pants. I wasn't expecting to spend so much but its all good I don't have to many clothes of that caliber. I have to run out here in a minute to pick it all up after the "custom" fitting adjustments are done. The only weird thing I'm worried about here is I don't exactly have a nice long coat to go with suit type clothing...and we are getting hammered with snow. Any ideas? go without? where my usual non-professional looking winter coat? --ya weird thing to be concerned about but every detail is of concern at this point LOL!

Re: wish me luck -interview
As someone that has interviewed, hired, and fired many many people I can offer you this ...
1. Don't smell ... if I can smell you (BO, breath, smelly hands, etc) you're cooked.
2. Be relaxed and friendly ... the interviewer doesn't want to be there even more than you don't, so being a bore will make it even more miserable.
3. If you're asked a question and don't know the answer, don't struggle, BS, or stall ... just say that you don't know.
4. Show that you want to do well and help the company succeed ... what you know is secondary.
5. Don't try and play it cool .. if you're super excited by the opportunity, show them that ... it will help ... eager is a good thing.
6. Be honest.
7. Don't worry about the winter coat ... IT people aren't generally know for being fashion bugs. ;)
Good luck ... smile, smile, smile!!! :D

Re: wish me luck -interview
Thank you Adam...#7 is so true, however I did find something that will work. I had my army class A over coat in the closet...never used it once but it looks just like any other overcoat so I'll use it to keep clean.
I really appreciate your tips, especially about being excited. Looking back I think that is something I have done...try'd to play it cool rather than let my eagerness and excitement show through a bit.

Class A coat will work ... just hope nobody there recognizes it as Army issue ... I interviewed a guy that showed up in his marine corps issue shiney black corofram shoes ... I made fun of him for the whole interview. :P
I used to do the play it cool thing too on interviews until I got into senior management and started interviewing and hiring ... eager is way cool to a hiring manager that has been working with the same crusty old dolts for years. ;) :sweeet:

Re: wish me luck -interview
Adam speaks the truth... I've only held two interviews so far in my life, but between the guy with more experience and the girl who seemed stoked and eager to work and learn, I ended up going with the girl.

Re: wish me luck -interview
...doh! Well that nixes my idea for shoes! They are probably just a little to shiny anyway. That's too funny that you recognized them being used in an interview though!

LOL ... you can see coroframs coming from a mile away!! ... I was always an old school leather and spit shine kind of guy, so catching a fake shine is pretty easy. :P
You have a great attitude ... show them that and the job is yours!! Good luck!

Re: wish me luck -interview
Thanks for the compliment Adam.
Well the the interview went pretty good from my point of view. It started off with the HR Director, VP of Finance, and the IT manager. Each had info shared in both directions and left when they where done. I talked to the IT manager the longest...of course. He is an interesting person and seems like one of those people everyone considers a "nice guy".
I learned more about what the business does and while a decent size in itself is still part of a much larger entity. They made sure to convey multiple times that it is a financially driven business, those who can keep up and do well get rewarded and those who don't get the door. Opportunities for advancement included not just this company but the parent company(ies) as well which could be in other states or even some locations starting up out of the US.
They offer college tuition reimbursement up to 75% and I would be expected to utilize that...awesome!
The number of workstations I would be managing is much less than the max number I currently have and in past jobs, however the network responsibilities will be far greater than I've ever had. -this is exactly how I would like things to be. I would definitely have some things to learn but that comes with any new job.
Something kinda funny...or maybe I threw myself under the bus with the comment: The HR Dir. at one point reminded me that we had talked on the phone about the salary range and that it was pretty broad, then asked "where about are you in that range currently?" I paused for a second trying to put my answer in words that wouldn't sound stupid and only came out with "...I'm not...in that range at all at the moment." I didn't mention the fact that the low end of the range he mentioned to me on the phone was more than 20K higher than what I am making now :0
I was told their are other candidates, which I figured. I'm not quite sure what to think possibility wise I really wasn't getting a reading other than hitting the same page with the IT manager letting him know that I had experience in something when he was listing different areas or specific items included in the duties.
They are supposed to make a decision by next week so I don't know if that means they won't be doing a second round or not. Oh and man did I look SEXY in my fancy clothes! WOOO I turned myself on! -ok not really but I felt pretty dang good.
Now that that is all over and I've had some lunch I think I'll relax the rest of the afternoon and get a jump on cleaning tubs!
Thanks again everyone your support and kind words mean alot to me!

Re: wish me luck -interview
Ok need some advice here if you folks aren't all off watching the game :P
I have to send in a general app to this company required by all applicants. I would like to include a follow up/thank you letter with it but I'm having a hard time with who to direct it towards. The interview involved the HR manager, VP of finance, and the IT manager. The HR guy was in the shortest amount of time and left after a nice explanation of what the company does and is all about, the VP and IT manager where there through the main interview with VP leaving at a "break" when the IT manager went to look for another person in IT just to come in and talk. That person was never found but the IT manager and I did continue going over things a bit longer.
I want to direct the letter to the IT manager as he would be my boss but it would be a score if the VP was aware that I had followed up also...having the HR guy know also would be helpful....gah! In a way I guess I need to reach/thank all of them!?
-
Re: wish me luck -interview
I would thank all three of them with a letter, that is for sure.
-
Re: wish me luck -interview
It never hurts to cover all your bases and thank all of them.
-
Re: wish me luck -interview
I think I got it down how I like it. The letter is addressed to the IT manager and the first main paragraph is geared towards him as well selling myself...but its not a long paragraph. The second paragraph is thanking the other two guys by title and name as well as stating specific topics or discussion I found enjoyable or helpful.
I just decided that since I currently work in the same city I will deliver the letter and application by hand. I don't now why I was thinking I would have my wife send it out when I can easily make the run during lunch!

Re: wish me luck -interview
So its Friday and I have heard nothing from the company. I already knew it but I called a few minutes ago to confirm. "We just finalized with another candidate but thank you blah blah blah..."
I'm trying not to be down...it won't ruin my weekend, but man would it have the job I was looking for and not to mention opened the door financially for some things my wife and I would like to do...new house.
Young people: no matter how talented you are, even if your using your talents in a job already...DO NOT ride it out. GO TO COLLEGE! I started working on computers in high school and then started college but never finished. Here I am nearly 10yrs later, yes I have that 10yrs of experience but no degree. I have no doubt I could be in a much better position if I had a degree stacked up with my work experience. Maybe this is the wake up call I needed...
-
Re: wish me luck -interview
Sorry to hear man!
I know the frustration - neither of my degrees is in the field I find myself employed in - and those I got I got as a "non-traditional student" later in life than I would have liked.
You just need to craft the next youtube/myspace/google and cash in!
PM check

Re: wish me luck -interview

Re: wish me luck -interview
