Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
Got this from a member of my local herp soc. forum. Apparently the stupid people who make the news have forced the lawmakers hands. I don't know exactly where they are with this bill, but it will be a major pain for those that own the affected species. Fences, signs, notify law enforcement and fire depts. notifications, not to mention the :O $250,000 of insurance that will be required. If you live in Ohio, contact you representative and tell them your opinion of H.B.No. 643. :taz:
Here is a link to it: http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/b...?ID=126_HB_643

WOW! That really blows for people that own big constrictors. People who don't know how to keep these animals correctly hurt those of us who do.

My goodness lawmakers are on a roll this year. The propsed ban in Indiana, this, the other crazy laws trying to be passed.
Wow.

WOW! I am going to make some calls about this. I am royally boned if this gets put into effect!

Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
Why do they always have to put that '8 foot' limit on things like this? As if that's some kind of magic number... I know people with bullsnakes that are longer then that. Some kinds of carpet pythons get longer then that and they are incapable of seriously harming or killing a human being.

Its because they're all ill-educated ignorami. I didn't enlist in the army just so my freedom can be taken away like this. I have contacted Bob Clark, and Fluker Farms. I'm just waiting on a reply back from them.

LOL. I love that Exotic Animal list. It's as if they polled a bunch of 2nd graders on what were the scariest animals they could think of. Let's see... I can't keep a green iguana or an elephant, but I can keep any snake in the Viperidae family, and pretty much any crocodilian.

Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
I think Crocodilians and Vipers are for the most part banned in Ohio, or atleast in most areas. They're banned here in Lucas county.

Yet Elapidae, tigers and lions have been okay? :rolleye2:

Yeah, something I don't get either. Leave it up to these "Geniuses" to decide our freedoms, and rights...

The answer is simple, the ones trying to make these laws do not have a clue about snakes. Its much easier for them to use a "size" then common sense .Now you dont think these people would use a little of thier work time to edgeucate themselves about snakes do you? :P

I've contacted Mike Wilbanks, and Bob Clark. My email won't get through to Flukers Farms.....it keeps getting returned. I'll try and contact some others, as well as some people in the area.

Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
Just out of curiosity, is there a list somewhere that details the species within the family Boidae and how many of them have the 'potential' to get over 8 feet long?
-
Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
I believe quite a few of them have the potential to grow to 8 feet in length or more...
Blackheaded Python, Burmese Python, African Rock Python, Southern African Rock Python, Indian Python, Reticulated Python, Jampean Dwarf Reticulated Python, Selayar Reticulated Python, Coastal Carpet Python, Amethystine Python, Papuan Python....just to name off a few. I was recently told about 10 minutes ago that this proposed ban was dropped.
-
Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
Well thats good news that it was dropped. however you should probably be on the lookout for it to come back in a different form.
As far as python sizes, I was also thinking off the top of my head that you could add Macklots, Olives, ringed, and a bunch of others that while they typically don't get that big, could have the potential to do so. And thats just pythons. What about the boas?

Aren't the pythons actually part of "Pythonidae" as opposed to "Boidae". Pythons aren't even on the list, just Elapidae, and Boidae "that has the potential to exceed eight feet...". But if it was already killed, so much the better :carrot: I hope it is true
-
Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
The family Boidae, I believe encompasses the subfamilies of pythons and boas
-
Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
This is true. The family Boidae consists of Both Boidae, and Pythoninae. This will effect all Boids. Any Python or Boa specie growing in excess of 8' will be effected by this ban.

A friend of mine had sent me this site. This proposition was pulled. If you'd like to read up, here is the site...

Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
So it's against Ohio law to have a green iguana? Why are pet stores selling them then...what happens if you have one?
Oh wait I re read it, you need a permit....how do you get one. I don't have any iggys but a friend of mine has 7 of 'em....
-
Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
They were trying to ban them. I do believe with bans, that the only way you can get the permit is if you had previously owned the animal before it was put into effect. If this does happen anytime in the future, I'll be more than steamed. I don't want to see my Green/Granite project go down the toilet...

Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
Does my male colombian BCI fall into the category of snakes in the family of boidae that have the potential of reaching 8 feet in length!!!??? Theres no way I can afford to pay insurance on him, seeing as I'm in highschool and have no income.
-
Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
Yes it would fall under that category. The species is listed under Boa constrictor, pertaining to both sub-species...I don't believe they would make exceptions to the ban when relating to sub-species and just ban the species outwrite. And since even B.c.i.'s have the capability to reach in excess of 8' They would be listeed under the ban.

Re: Bad, bad news for Ohio herp owners!! READ THIS!!!
ohh wait, posted before I read. Theres no way I'm giving up my boa. Especially because some ignorant politician was scared by garter snake as a child.
