Oh thank you so much for offering your services. I've got a little guy you could take for me. His name is Poncho and as you can see he's getting a bit too large for his tank. I prefer pick up but deliver is fine. :)
This is Poncho trying to get out. Hes so sneaky. :D

We had to keep him leashed to a crane so he wouldn't go diggin through the garbage.

To everyone
wow, thanks for the pat on the back guys. And as for the post on craigslist i post all the time, thanks. I'm actually trying to established some sort of reptile organization in Dallas- for anyone who cares, its cost me a lot of money already. But besides the point im not some hoarder trying to get reptiles.
But thanks for the crap- i'll be sure and never visit this site again so that you can go on with your millions of others trying to save reptiles.
P.S.--- And the reason for starting a rescue again-not that ya'll care but i lost all my rescued animals in a fire three months ago because of a guy that just wanted to burn down a apartment building. It was devastating-however i felt for the rescues that i lost that i should try and help other reptiles, but don't worry i'll take in consideration of what everyone on this site has said so that ya'll can feel important!

My apologies Kristin, I meant no offense is saying it sounded like a Craigslist Ad.
This is a community of reptile enthusiasts. You will rarely find "unwanted reptiles" on this site. I hope your search for animals to rescue turns out to be a successful search. Please keep us posted.

Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
Thanks for the apologies, but maybe ya'll should welcome people in a nicer way- i shouldn't have to tell my life story to make a thread.I spend day and night trying work with people and their animals to elaborate to people on a website who probably wont care anyways.
People here in Dallas in my opinion are careless with animals that i have noticed just to make their kid happy. Not to mention pet shops here are not knowledgeable and let animals die all the time, one specifically.
Just trying to help- understand my frustration and what im trying to do.
On a happier note, does anyone have any carpet pythons? I miss mine and would like to have one just for me.

I hope you understand that so many people come... just to get a free snake - that after the 20 or 30th time you see a thread like that... people tend to get apprehensive about responding in a helpful way... it's not right... but it's what happens. Also, if you feel you don't want to elaborate to people on a website who probably won't care anyways... then you aren't even giving us a fair shake!
Of course, when someone comes and shares something of themselves with us, then we welcome them with open arms. But when you are holding back... you can't expect us to jump up and down and throw ya a party :giggle:
So please don't be frustrated... cause honestly... I think it was frustration on both sides of the fence on this one

Welcome to the site. Like it has been previously stated, 99.9% of people on this site actually care about their animals and want what is best for them. Apologies for the harsh comments made by other members, we are sometimes bombarded by spammers and you were mistaken as one of them....please understand our frustration.
We also have several people on this site that take in and rehome animals that are no longer wanted. The whole country is just like Dallas....people's ignorance towards reptiles is appauling.
What type of faculities do you have and what kinda of animals can you handle? If someone comes to this site with a troubled animal, it is always good to try to get them to someone near by.
Have a good one. Daniel

Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
I know what you mean about the people in Dallas/Austin. I'm in Waco and have taken in a good number of Balls/Boas. Some are rescues and some I have to actually pay for to get them out of their ungodly conditions. Some of these owners actually care that their animals go to good homes, others just want the snake out of their house/cost too much/kid doesn't want it, etc.
I just picked up three snakes in Austin in December, 2 Ball Pythons and a boa. One Ball and the boa were being kept in the same 29g tall tank, no heating, only being fed every few months. They are 3 years old and both around 2.5ft long... I had to pay an arm and a leg to get these animals out. They are now separated, eating great and gaining weight(and the boa likes to try to eat my head).
The other Ball was a huge 2600g female and was free. She was well taken care of and is 5 years old or so. The owner gave her to me because I'm a Vet Tech and could have gotten her proper vet care easily had she needed it. Luckily, she was healthy and is currently breeding.
One of my other females I got right here in Waco(Breth). She is a 3-4 year old female and was only 780g when I picked her up. Her owner was a college student who was moving away and didn't want to care for her anymore. That was last June? I think. She is currently 2100g and is breeding with my Lemon Pastel :)
As for Carpet Pythons, there is an awesome HUGE show on the 17th/18th of February at the Arlington Convention Center. There will be tons of quality breeders there and you will be able to see and hold the animal before you buy it. A good number of people from this site will be attending, so hopefully we can get to meet you! :sunny:

Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
Well the only reason I decided to turn this thread into a joke is because there is no point to it. See, this entire SECTION is dedicated to what you made a thread on. This section is for "For Sale/Trade/Adoption or Wanted" so there is no point for making thread like this. If there are people looking to get rid of an animal, this thread isn't going to be their big break, this section is dedicated for that purpose already. If your looking to save some animals, just check in every once in awhile and see if there is anybody looking to get rid of something. And if it is too much work for you to check this every so often or your worried youll miss something, maybe include something in your signature about PMing you if someone is looking to get rid of an animal. And don't be intimidated by Poncho, I know he looks a bit nippy but beneath his 4 inch hide, there is a kind loving death trap just waiting to be hugged. :D

Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
Thanks Daniel,
I'm trying to re-build my facility and i just had to spend over a 100 for a emerald tree boa (granted thats a great deal for one) but the poor thing 5months ago came into this pet store and got a eye infection instead of treating it he ended up losing it and now has one i eye, he and another emerald has been in dry shed for up to 4 months, dehydrated and thin. Not been handled either. I decided to get him out of there and now he is doing wonderful. I'm trying to save up to 250 just to get the other out of there.
But i deal with the large and very aggressive taming is what i like to do spending time with the animal until he feels so comfortable around me and others that he becomes dog tame.
and i have had almost everything even up to about 13 ft with scub pythons and retics, any sort of tree dwellers is usually what i end up with just because of their loner instinct and attitude i'm destined for the "angry", Just wish people would read before getting something.

Agreed...should anyone ever say "man i got this afrock/burm i need to get rid of...know anyone who wants one?"....i do now :gj:
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
Do you deal with large aggressive snakes all by yourself or do you have a support staff? Also, do you deal with large lizards?
Glad to hear that your new snake is doing well. ETB can be fiesty little creatures.
Personally, I am not a supporter of 'pay to rescue' animals. IMHO....Contributing money to pet stores for an animal in horrible shape only promotes the ignorance of pet stores. The sad fact is that another reptile will just take its place and the business will remain open due to the money that was given. Although it hurts my heart to see animals in horrible shape in pet stores, all I can really hope for them is a quick and painless death. After all, a pet store that kills all its animals won't be around for very long.
Although my opinion on that topic may be different, I think it is great what you are doing....keep it up ;)

Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
Dude,
Bad experience with 8ft African rocks-love em but i still can't feel anything in my lower hand to my thumb after year of my arm being wrapped and bitten.
Man that sucked......Great snakes though :D
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
I don't have a staff, its my significant other and i that handle our rescue but i have several people in Dallas that as a group we try and do our best. And yes, i deal with monitors as well.
I try not to handle anything over 8ft by myself atleast with out someone else being in the same house- i had a carpet that was almost i think right at 9 ft can't remember but she tried to wrap around my neck was real sneaky about it and a friend of mine was standing right in front of me just talking away not paying attention as i was losing air-----LOL, but after that no, always have someone near you.
As for the pet store they have been in business for 15 years- i hope it gets shut down.
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
wow it sounds like you've got quite a bit of experience under your belt.
now all you need is pics for us :D
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
Yeah, the pet store that's been in business for 15 years will continue to do business, as long as people continue to buy from them. I'm really glad there are people like you around to rescue reptiles, there is certainly a need. But I wish you'd rethink buying any, as a 'rescue'.
Make sure to drag through craigslist really often, I always miss stuff by one day on there. Are you on speaking terms with the local humane society type places? If so they could also refer people to you as a rescue for reptiles, since some really dislike taking in reptiles in general.
Sorry to hear about your fire. My dad burned down the hsoue delibritely backs ome years ago. It really sucks terrible.

Ummm, just my opinion but why would you by these animals from this abusive pet store. If you really dig into this, you'll see that you are just as bad as they are. Your giving these people money for these abused animals and they are profiting and will bring more in to abuse. This will be a never ending chain. You buying their animals will only provoke them to by more animals cuz they now what is working. I think it is great that you want to rescue them but buying them isnt the answer. Trust me cuz ive been in you situation every day. I live in Marshalltown Iowa and all we have for animal supplies (other than walmart and stuff) is an Earl May. It's base profit is plants. They have a ton of hamsters and anoles, iguanas, pacmans, and fish and EVERY SINGLE ONE IS KEPT HORRIBLY. Nobody there knows ANYTHING ABOUT ANYTHING. I want to cry everytime i walk in. They once got a tokay in and decided to put it in a 5 GALLON TANK. THE ANIMAL WAS LONGER THAN THE CAGE. I couldn't believe it. I asked if they would put it somewhere else and they said that they didnt want to use another one of their 10 gallons. I bought it and i regret it ever since now that i realize that i am just supporting them. There are other ways to deal with this and maybe even shut them down. Call animal rescue league or something but dont give those devils what they want. I'm not flaming im just trying to show you the truth.

Surely, if you're given the opportunity to pay to get an animal out of terrible conditions, you would, rather than letting it die. I think at the time of the purchase it'd be a wise thing to let them know why you're purchasing..because you think it's gonna die! right? :2cent:
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
I don't really agree with buying poorly taken care of animals either chase. But it beats the alternative of them dieing.
The best thing to do in that case is talk them into giving you a big of enough discount that they arent making money. You also need to realize that alot of pet store really don't make that much money on their pets. They have to feed and "take care of" said animals. They make all of their money on the accessories and food products.
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
i agree... buying them is not the answer. calling the SPCA and letting them do their job IS the answer.
cause buying them, just allows them to bring in another critter and treat them equally bad. it creates a cycle of abuse. :rainon:
-

unfortunately, they don't do much of anything in my neck of the woods. I have called on multiple pet stores near me and the only thing they will do is go have a "talk" with the pet store.
It is ridiculous.
I think if pet stores here were abusing dogs spca would be all over that, but they just don't know enough about reptiles to realize when they are being very poorly taken care of.
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
then enlighten your spca. print out caresheets and talk to the people in charge. it's amazing how much can be done if you put your heart into it https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil.../4/7/heart.gif
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
Oh I have tried talking to the spca. I have tried talking to stores... very frustrating.
I even got a job at one of said stores to try and turn it around but they refused to redo their enclosures... (they were built poorly and held NO humidty at all)
anyway, i just avoid pet stores in my area anymore.
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
To be honest, i used to work there- it was only a temp job and 2 years later was still there. The only reason i stayed was because i wanted to help save the animals and then i honestly could not take it any more, not only do they treat their animals poorly but their employees as well.
They are already in the database for the Cruelty for animals website, for several reasons, but they also have a friend i believe working for the SPCA- they get complaints ever day but it just gets thrown out. I've done my research- people are trying to figure out how to shut them down in Dallas.
But i wish i was a strong as you not to get them out of there, and they know why i am buying it and they give me discounts, its not more or less the employees- they try, its the owners- they don't care but for the money.
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
in that case i would go to the papers and also higher up the chain of command at the spca.
i'm a real 'get it done' person... i just keep going up the chain till i get justice... and so far, i've never failed.
cause there's always someone higher... or more publicity which can be brought to light. especially if you use manners, facts and are professional in your actions. don't mud sling, don't name call... cause you want to be taken seriously and when you act mature... you are taken as such. ;)
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
I'll take that into definite consideration...........good advise.

There is something I learned when I was an international operator with AT&T a while back....
the customer is ALWAYS right
if something is wrong, as you mentioned, go up the chain of command. just dont let yourself get bullied into backing off until you get something done. is all else fails, go to your state attorney general. I have gone that route several times and have been satisfied with the results.
I reallt do commend you all who do rescues. I would if my SO wasnt ro touchy about gaining new pets. so I live vicariously (sp?) through the rest of you who are able to take in unwanted critters.

This is true... and after a while they are just another mouth to feed to the petstore owner. :(
Props for the rescueing of these animals. I've been doing my best to try to rescue some of the balls in the area around Tampa and give them a good home and care. I don't have enough experience, space nor the help with the larger species like the burms and tic's but I do my best to take care of the balls. :)
Keep up the good work! ;)

Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
Well I don't feel the need apologize because like everyone said, there are so many scammer ads that say just what yours did. People are always looking for free snakes! But I think it's great what you are doing. And I feel for you, my Grandfather's 100 year old house just burnt to the ground in California 2 weeks ago. My dad, sister, and 2 nephews lost everything and almost their lives.
Anyways, I'm glad the pet stores around me aren't nearly as bad as some of the ones I've seen in the bigger cities like Buffalo and Rochester. I'd say if you want to do something, than you scare them. Bring a copy of the SPCA animal rights and say if they don't shape up that you'll report them. Or better yet, report them! Take pictures...that's always a sure fire way to catch them.
-
Re: Will Take Unwanted Reptiles
well i'll definitely do that then we have contemplated pics before and they trust us if we took pics they wouldn't even think twice nor do they even pay attention to us in the first place.
The reptile guy gave me a white lip python under the table today- he has been there for 9mths, and two feet long with huge scabs on his back I quote " we have no clue how those got there" How the do you not notice something like that.omg.............. But anyways, he is very stressed and he has tried biting me everytime i have held him- he got nose LOL. He's cute though. Glad i took him home.
