"It doesn't cost a thing to smile
You don't have to pay to laugh
You better thank God for that"
There's Hope, India Arie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"When was the last time
That they heard you say
Mother or father, I love you
And when was the last time
That they heard you say
Daughter or son, I love you
Ones you say you cherish everyday
Can instantly be taken away
Then you'd say I know this can't be true
When you never took the time
To simply tell them "I love you"
When was the last time
That they heard you say
Sister or brother, I love you
And when was the last time
That they heard you say
Darling or best friend, I love you
The one for whom you'd give your very life
Could be taken in the twinkling of an eye
Through you tears you'd ask why did you go
Knowing you didn't always show
Just how much you loved them so"
These Three Words, Stevie Wonder
Re: What song lyrics get to you??? { TOP 3 ;}
A lot of the songs that have touched me deeply are from my life long love of country music. Our home was filled with it, my family even had a band for sometime when I was a kid.
I was raised by my grandparents but I called them Mom and Dad and they truly were the parents of my heart and soul. They've both passed on now and I miss them every day. When Daddy went suddenly of a heart attack and I had to deal with it, the hardest thing at his funeral was seeing his always moving, always expressive, big work hardened hands laying at rest....quiet forever. This song and it's lyrics still bring tears after 15 years but they are the good healing tears so I don't mind them so much.
Daddy's hands were soft and kind when I was cryin´.
Daddy´s hands, were hard as steel when I´d done wrong.
Daddy´s hands, weren´t always gentle
But I´ve come to understand.
There was always love in Daddy´s hands.
I remember Daddy´s hands, working 'til they bled.
Sacrificed unselfishly, just to keep us all fed.
If I could do things over, I´d live my life again.
And never take for granted the love in Daddy´s hands.
~Daddy's Hands performed by Holly Dunn~
10 years later Momma followed him but we lost her to cancer which is so much worse. A song was there to help me understand it would be okay to say goodbye and let her find her peace even though we all wanted more time with this wonderful lady.
Sitting with mama alone in her bedroom
She opened her eyes and then squeezed my hand
She said "I have to go now my time here is over"
And with her final words she tried to help me understand
Mama whispered softly "Time will ease your pain"
"Life's about changing nothing ever stays the same"
And she said
"How can I help you to say goodbye"
"It's okay to hurt and it's okay to cry"
"Come let me hold you and I will try"
"How can I help you to say goodbye"
~How Can I Help You To Say Goodbye performed by Laura Branigan~
My third choice is a toughie. Split between two songs really so I'm listing both.
The first always makes me smile and love being female and chuckle a bit at how we women confuse and confound any males in our lives. Very affirming song LOL.
I'm a b*tch, I'm a lover
I'm a child, I'm a mother
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I'm your hell, I'm your dream
I'm nothing in between
You know you wouldn't want it any other way
So take me as I am
This may mean
You'll have to be a stronger man
Rest assured that
When I start to make you nervous
And I'm going to extremes
Tomorrow I will change
And today won't mean a thing
~B*tch performed by Meredith Brooks~
This song always reminds me to keep believing, keep striving, keep engaging life even when life isn't much fun or I fail. It's a song that touches my soul and helps me remember to never give up and to ride out the rough patches as best I can rather than be too afraid to even try.
I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I'll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry
Too many times we stand aside
And let the waters slip away
'Til what we put off 'til tomorrow
Has now become today
So don't you sit upon the shoreline
And say you're satisfied
Choose to chance the rapids
And dare to dance the tide.. yes
~The River performed by Garth Brooks~
Re: What song lyrics get to you??? { TOP 3 ;}
"They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters."
"In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral
The church bell chimed, 'til it rang 29 times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald."
These two verses from "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot always get to me and I have a hard time making it through the song when I playing it.
"Madame Sohsten"
The lyrics to this Cajun song always get to me, but without the music and translated from Acadian French and knowing something about Cajun culture, they would make no sense.
"Rainy day people always seem to know when its time to call
Rainy day people dont talk, they just listen till theyve heard it all
Rainy day lovers dont lie when they tell ya theyve been down like you
Rainy day people dont mind if youre cryin a tear or two"
"If you get lonely, all you really need is that rainy day love
Rainy day people all know theres no sorrow they cant rise above
Rainy day lovers dont love any others, that would not be kind
Rainy day people all know how it hangs on a piece of mind"
"Rainy day lovers dont lie when they tell you, theyve been down there too
Rainy day people dont mind if youre cryin a tear or two."
"Rainy day people always seem to know when youre feeling blue
High stepping strutters who land in the gutters sometimes need one too
Take it or leave it, or try to believe it
If youve been down too long"
"Rainy day lovers dont hide love inside they just pass it on
Rainy day lovers dont hide love inside they just pass it on"
"Rainy Day People" by Gordon Lightfoot
They are all great! I think people really under estimate the impact a song an have on a person....
Re: What song lyrics get to you??? { TOP 3 ;}
Gordon Lightfoot....that brings back memories...thanks Craig. He's another fav of mine and the song of that ship going down was one often sung in our basement jam sessions.
Thanks Laooda. Sadly I inherited no ability to sing or play an instrument but my memories of some of my family members, guitars out (heck even spoons being played...yes we are proud Canadian hicks LOL)....singing Cash tunes, laughing as somebody went off key or struggling with a new guitar lick...my older brother Jimmy learning CCR's "Brown Eyed Girl" just to sing for me....well it's about a lot of good memories and a gave me a lifelong connection to the message in all sorts of music.
Momma came from Scotland so I'll share also my absolute favorite song from her homeland....
Speed bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward, the sailors cry
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
~Skye Boat Song~
She brought into our music loving family the haunting songs of the Scots, the beauty and strength of a full throated bagpipe in the hands of a master.
Hello all you boys and girls.
I'd like to take you to the inside world.
It's quite an irregular place to be.
But never fear you're safe with me.
Well, maybe.
Golden hair of macrame'
Against the face that's cut from stone.
The white porcelain is screaming Ayee
Thank God the the boy is not alone.
I don't believe in Santa Claus.
I don't belive in spite.
I have no use for beauty dolls.
Especially on this night.
I don't believe in miracles.
I don't belive in lies.
I don't belive in hologram
For I am the Frizzle Fry.
Andy's painting green again,
This time they might take him away.
When Barrington starts to breathe again.
It way just take us all away.
I don't believe in charity.
I don't believe in sin.
And if you don't believe in me,
We'll play this tune over again.
I don't believe in pinochle
And I don't beleive I'll try.
I do believe in Captain Crunch
For I am the Frizzle Fry.
Yes I am the Frizzle Fry.
Re: What song lyrics get to you??? { TOP 3 ;}
They played this song at my Uncle Tim's funeral and I still get really nostalgic and weepy when I hear it.
Time of your life -- By Green Day
So take the photographs
and still frames in your mind.
Hang it on a shelf
In good health and good time.
Tattoos of memories
and dead skin on trial.
For what it's worth,
it was worth all the while.
It's something unpredictable
but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.
-----
I'm just a sucker for love songs, and I love this one to death :) VH's first album...when it was just a couple of guys and some really good acoustic sounds. I love mellow folky stuff :)
"Liberty" -- Vertical Horizon
We met as two total strangers,
as many lovers often do.
But who could have ever seen the danger?
Didn't know I'd fall in love with you.
You are this lonely picker's daydream
Like a wish that's wishing to come true.
So Liberty just know I'm waiting...
to share this love song with you.
But do you think about me when you're lyin' in his bed?
Would you take the time to explain?
Do you ever think you'd rather be with me insead?
Or do you only think about me when it rains?
Do you recall a song by Donna Fargo called "Teddy Bear" ?
Have you ever heard Dolly's "Coat of Many Colors"?
How about Tom T. Halls "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine?
NGDB's, "Mr. Bojangles", "Dance Little Jean" or "Share Croppers Dream"
I'm not a fan of modern Country, but the old stuff works.
"Mary was an acrobat
but still she couldn't seem to breathe.
Mary was becoming everything she didn't want to be.
Mary would hallucinate and see the sky up on the wall
Mary was the type of girl
She always like to fly"
- Buddah for Mary, 30 Seconds to Mars
"How can you just walk away from me,
when all I can do is watch you leave
Cos we've shared the laughter and the pain,
and even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now,
'cos there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me,
just the memory of your face
Take a look at me now,
'cos there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me
is against all odds and that's what I've got to face "
- Against all odds, Phil Collins
"When you grab a hold of me Tell
me that I'll never be set free
I'm a parasite,
creep and crawl I step into the night.
Two pints of booze
Tell me are you a badfish too? Are you a badfish too?
Ain't got no money to spend
I know the night will never end
Lord knows I'm weak
Won't somebody get me off of this reef
Baby your a big blue whale
Grab the reef when all duck diving fails
I swim but wish I never learned
The water's too polluted with germs
I dive deep when it's ten feet overhead
Grab the reef underneath my bed
Ain't got no quarrels with god Ain't got no time to grow old
Lord knows I'm weak
Won't somebody get me off of this reef
Ain't got no quarrels with God Ain't got no time to grow old
Lord knows I'm weak
Won't somebody get me off of this reef "
Erm..
A soppy one that makes me go all mooshy :oops: ;
Possession by Sarah Maclachlan (sp?)
Listen as the wind blows
from across the great divide,
Voices trapped in yearning,
memories trapped in time,
The night is my companion
and solitude my guide,
Would I spend forever here
and not be satisfied,
And I would be the one
to hold you down,
kiss you so hard,
I'll take your breath away
and after I'd wipe away the tears,
Just close your eyes dear
Through this world I've stumbled
so many times betrayed,
Trying to find an honest word,
to find the truth enslaved,
Oh you speak to me in riddles and
you speak to me in rhymes
My body aches to breathe your breath,
your words keep me alive,
And I would be the one
to hold you down,
kiss you so hard,
I'll take your breath away
and after I'd wipe away the tears,
Just close your eyes dear
Into this night I wander,
it's morning that I dread,
Another day of knowing of
the path I fear to tread,
Oh into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride,
Nothing stands between us here
and I won't be denied,
And I would be the one
to hold you down,
kiss you so hard,
I'll take your breath away
and after I'd wipe away the tears,
Just close your eyes dear...
The unacompanied piano version for preference.
And Alanah Myles "Black Velvet" makes me look for the closest danceable female.:)
In Held 'Twas In I - by Procol Harum
[Glimpses of Nirvana]
In the darkness of the night, only occasionally relieved by
glimpses of Nirvana as seen through other people's
windows, wallowing in a morass of self-despair made only
more painful by the knowledge that all I am is of my own
making ...
When everything around me, even the kitchen ceiling, has
collapsed and crumbled without warning. And I am left,
standing alive and well, looking up and wondering why and
wherefore.
At a time like this, which exists maybe only for me, but is
nonetheless real, if I can communicate, and in the telling
and the bearing of my soul anything is gained, even though
the words which I use are pretentious and make you cringe
with embarrassment, let me remind you of the pilgrim who
asked for an audience with the Dalai Lama.
He was told he must first spend five years in
contemplation. After the five years, he was ushered into
the Dalai Lama's presence, who said, 'Well, my son, what
do you wish to know?' So the pilgrim said, 'I wish to know
the meaning of life, father.'
And the Dalai Lama smiled and said, 'Well my son, life is like
a beanstalk, isn't it?'
Held close by that which some despise
which some call fake, and others lies
And somewhat small
for one so tall
a doubting Thomas who would be?
It's written plain for all to see
for one who I am with no more
it's hard at times, it's awful raw
They say that Jesus healed the sick and helped the poor
and those unsure
believed his eyes
- a strange disguise
Still write it down, it might be read
nothing's better left unsaid
only sometimes, still no doubt
it's hard to see, it all works out
['Twas Tea-time at the Circus]
'Twas tea-time at the circus: King Jimi, he was there
Through hoops he skipped, high wires he tripped, and all the while the glare
of the aching, baking spotlight beat down upon his cloak
and though the crowd clapped furiously they could not see the joke
'Twas tea-time at the circus, though some might not agree
as jugglers danced, and horses pranced and clowns clowned endlessly
But trunk to tail the elephants quite silent, never spoke
and though the crowd clapped desperately they could not see the joke
[In the Autumn of My Madness]
In the autumn of my madness when my hair is turning grey
for the milk has finally curdled and I've nothing left to say
When all my thoughts are spoken (save my last departing birds)
bring all my friends unto me and I'll strangle them with words
In the autumn of my madness which in coming won't be long
for the nights are now much darker and the daylight's not so strong
and the things which I believed in are no longer quite enough
for the knowing is much harder and the going's getting rough
[Look to Your Soul]
I know if I'd been wiser this would never have occurred
but I wallowed in my blindness so it's plain that I deserve
for the sin of self-indulgence when the truth was writ quite clear
I must spend my life amongst the dead who spend their lives in fear
of a death that they're not sure of, of a life they can't control
It's all so simple really if you just look to your soul
Some say that I'm a wise man, some think that I'm a fool
It doesn't matter either way: I'll be a wise man's fool
For the lesson lies in learning and by teaching I'll be taught
for there's nothing hidden anywhere, it's all there to be sought
And so if you know anything look closely at the time
at others who remain untrue and don't commit that crime
Re: What song lyrics get to you??? { TOP 3 ;}
Classic country will always be the best Craig, though some of the new stuff isn't bad (especially Brad Paisley, Martina McBride and that sort). Black Velvet, now that's a sexy song if there ever was one Derek...great choice! Sarah's a huge fav around here Derek. Our youngest son was born to her music actually. He was delivered by a midwife and Sarah's CD "Mirrorball" was playing in the background....if I remember it right I believe it was "Building a Mystery" that was playing at the moment of Mikey's birth.
For flat out admiration of the person, her incredible voice and her music though I'll always go with Melissa Etheridge. Her duet with Joss Stone on the 2005 Grammy's doing a Janis Joplin tribute was bar none the best thing I've ever seen on TV. Joss Stone's ability to sing (at her young age) with the strength, power and passion that can match Melissa's was awe inspiring and made me an instant Joss Stone fan. As well, seeing Melissa perform bald and proud having just complete chemo for breast cancer, able to sing at her usual powerhose level, brought tears to my ears. The power of that image is so much more than the music itself.
"Everlong"
hello
I've waited here for you
everlong
tonight I throw myself into
and out of the red
out of her head she sang
come down
and waste away with me
down with me
slow how
you wanted it to be
I'm over my head
out of her head she sang
and I wonder
when I sing along with you
if everything could ever feel this real forever
if anything could ever be this good again
the only thing I'll ever ask of you
you've got to promise not to stop whn I say when
breathe out so I can breathe you in
hold you in
and now I know you've always been
out of your head
out of my head I sang
Re: What song lyrics get to you??? { TOP 3 ;}
Ok, I'll add 3 that really get to me right now.
Melissa Etheridge's I Run for Life. (My mom diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago, my stepmother currently undergoing treatment and my sister in law's mom currently undergoing treatment as well)
It's been years since they told her about it
The darkness her body possessed
And the scars are still there in the mirror
Everyday that she gets herself dressed
Though the pain is miles and miles behind her
And the fear is now a docile beast
If you ask her why she is still running
She'll tell you it makes her complete
[Chorus:]
I run for hope
I run to feel
I run for the truth
For all that is real
I run for your mother your sister your wife
I run for you and me my friend I run for life
It's a blur since they told me about it
How the darkness had taken its toll
And they cut into my skin and they cut into my body
But they will never get a piece of my soul
And now I'm still learning the lesson
To waken when I hear the call
And if you ask me why I am still running
I'll tell you I run for us all
[Chorus]
And someday if they tell you about it
If the darkness knocks on your door
Remember her remember me
We will be running as we have before
Running for answers
Running for more
On a lighter note, I really like Natasha Beddingfield's Unwritten
Unwritten
------Natasha Bedingfield
I am unwritten,
Can't read my mind
I'm undefined
I'm just beginning
The pen's in my hand
Ending unplanned
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words
That you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten ,yeah
Oh, oh
I break tradition
Sometimes my tries
Are outside the lines, oh yeah
We've been conditioned
To not make mistakes
But I can't live that way oh, oh
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words
That you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips x2 (twice)
drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words
That you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
drench yourself in words unspoken
Live you life with arms wide open
Today is where you book begins
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten
(YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!)
Also Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars...
All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes
They're all I can see
I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things
Will never change for us at all
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Re: What song lyrics get to you??? { TOP 3 ;}
I cry every time at this song its about a girl that nobody pays attenetion to and she ends up getting beaten to death by abusive parents. :
She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holdin' back
Wearin' the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides the bruises with linen and lace
The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born
Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel
Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it'll be too late
Repeat Chorus
A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot
and this one about the little boy wanting to buy the shoes for his mom on Christmas. Real tear jerker
It was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line
tryin' to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood
standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously
pacing 'round like little boys do
and in his hands he held a pair of shoes
His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe
and when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say
Chorus:
Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my mama, please
it's Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
could you hurry, sir, daddy says there's not much time
you see mom's been sick for quite a while
and I know these shoes would make her smile
and I want her to look beautiful if mama meets Jesus tonight
He counted pennies for what seemed like years
then the cashier said, "son, there's not enough here"
he searched his pockets frantically
then he turned and he looked at me
he said mama made Christmas good at our house
though most years she just did without
tell me sir what am I going to do,
somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes
I just had to help him out and as I laid the money down
I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
mama's gonna look so great
Repeat chorus
Bridge:
I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
as he thanked me and ran out
I knew that god had sent that little boy
to remind me just what Christmas is all about
Repeat chorus
Re: What song lyrics get to you??? { TOP 3 ;}
"give me something to believe in" - poison
"if I had to live without you, what kind of life would that be" - I think its faith hill
"our love is like a storybook story" - willy deville (I think thats right)
"I'll never let you go..." - steelheart
I know I have many more, but this is what I came up with off the top of my head
