    baby bird needs your love
One of our baby cockatiels is not doing well today. She has stopped digesting her food (crop is not emptying) and I'm concerned about her.

Please join us, sending loving energy to her...

She is hand fed and approx. 3 weeks old

well in our experience... once they stop digesting their food they usually die within a few hours. hopefully she'll make it till tomorrow (with the assistance of the healing circles i've set up) and i'll call our vet to see if he has any suggestions.

i just did some research and it says that giving them baby applesauce is a remedy as it's natural probiotic and that's what they need to help empty their crop. so ... we just happen to have a jar here from our crested geckos... so my hubby is warming it now for her ;)

well she wouldn't take the applesauce so we'll try again in an hour.

so odd. she's been growing sooooo well... doing so great. she was the runt when we pulled her from her parents. i've been so pleased with her growth.

light a candle for her please...

and i would like to publically thank laura (laooda) for all her assistance via pm. she's got a LOT of knowledge and is sharing with me... assisting me... and i want her to know how much i appreciate her!

unfortunately she died last night. we buried her in our "serenity" garden this morning.

thank you all for your well wishes. i'm sure the love you all sent to her, made her passing more graceful than it would have been without it.

so... i thank you for her.

okay i just spoke to my vet... he's been in the O.R. all morning.

so... we discussed her... and he feels that because she was a runt and soooo small and underweight when we pulled her (from her parents) that she most likely had heart or liver issues. he said that hand feeding her kept her alive longer.

in the past, we've noticed that when a baby is much smaller... it doesn't survive. in the years we've been handfeeding (i think three years now) and the clutches we've handfed... we've lost 2 other babies. i'm trying to remember exactly, but one died within hours of pulling her from her parents and the other died while i was getting ready to start feeding it. it spun around in my hand and it's heart stopped.

i know it's part of the circle of life... but it's these little ones, the runts who touch us the deepest.

    Aleesha...

:( The little pinfeather bundles are always so delicate...the fact that "not all of them are meant to make it" doesn't ease our responsibility as bird-moms when it comes to providing for them. Your sorrow in the midst of losing this wee slip of a bird is testament of your dedication to - and reverence for - all living things. May we all learn from and follow your example of compassion & respect.

oh kara i have sooo held it together during all of this and now i'm crying. thank you so much.

when i went to feed the other little tiel... it made me sad to see him sitting in the box alone :( i spent some extra time cuddling him to try to make up for his loss. my hubby thankfully is doing the rest of the feedings.

Awww Aleesha I'm so sorry to read of the little one's loss. I know that it's part of life and all that but that doesn't stop the hurt very much does it. Big hugs friend. I know your tears are a tribute to this little bird and it passed in a home where it was truly cared for.

Please accept my deepest sympathies. Sometimes it seems like no matter what we do we still lose them. At least you can know that you made its last days the best you could.
