Hehe, got myself into a fine bit of a pickle here folks...
Lets ask the internet what to do!!!
You see theres this girl...
And she has rats for pets.....
And well see shes really cute an all but, Do ya think theres a chance? I mean "The Dude" will be up to eating rats in a couple of months I bet.
I'm jsut wondering how she would react to her favorite pet being.... well on the "menu" if you will.....
Not that I would ever feed a pet rat to a snake but theres a similarity there. I mean foods, food, and all.
It seems I like the predator type animals and she likes the "gets eaten by predators" types.
I dunno how its gonna work out, but it sure will be interesting!!!
Thoughts, rumors, suggestions? Discuss please...

Wellll....people who like rats that much are often seen in much the same light as people who like snakes. "Weird." So you guys have that in common! :P And typically, people who love rats tend to love all animals...so maybe she can love snakes, too. You'll never know unless you give her a chance.
I happen to find rats adorable and look forward to the day when I can breed my own and treat the breeders like beloved pets. But I love my snakes, too...and feed 'em what they need. It's just part of life.

Well, you can do like I and a few other folks here do, and just feed mice. I have adult females(2600g+) on mice and they do great.
I have pet rats as well, 24 of them to be exact(with more on the way), and cannot bring unquarantined rats into my house. I also have a few snakes that will not touch rats with a 10-foot pole(you can actually see them wrinkle their noses, hehe). So I breed mice and it works out well for me.

Kelly had rats that she adored, as long as her rats weren't on the menu she was fine. She knows the snakes have to eat too. She even goes to get the snakes rats on feeding day. She doesn't like to see them die , so maybe she would be okay if you were feeding frozen thaw.

Re: Hehe, got myself into a fine bit of a pickle here folks...
i think it should be alright. i have pet rats as well as snakes. when i first got my snake i hated feeding him becuase i always felt so bad for the rat, then i always asked myself, "who do you love more, the rat or the snake?" the answer was always the snake (esp. because the rats were already dead. lol), so im fine, just explain how you feel to her that way, and it should be alright.
best of luck to you and this chica.

it all depends. i know rattie and mice people who hate snake people. i know other rattie and mice people who love snake people.
:) you'll just have to dive in and check and see if the waters warm!

Ditto that.
If it were me, I'd ask her straight up, "do you have a problem with me feeding rats to my snake? Not YOUR rats of course, but rats in general." and see what she says. Get her brain cued on the idea now before your snake starts feeding on rats and *if* she's opposed to it, she'll either get over it...or she won't.
Either way, IMO, it's better to find out sooner rather than later and for goodness sake DON"T drop the bomb on her suddenly one day when you pull out a rat and toss it into your snake....bad idea, very bad idea. ;) I know a lot of people who have done that. They don't say a word about then out of the blue, in walks the other half and sees this cute little bunny (or whatever) getting clobbered by this snake and they freak out, get mad and that relationship goes right out the window.

Well I think my 5 year old son said it best last week. Since we breed rats and mice we have both adult breeders that have names and feeders that don't have names. Mikey just pointed to the feeder rodents and said "those get eaten", pointed to the breeders and said "those do not get eaten". Little kids tend to get right to the heart of the matter don't they. :)

If she is Italian AVOID her at all costs! My wife is Italian and she has ruined my life.
Any other nationality and you're good to go. Just remember no means yes.:D

Argh; my bestest friend in the world is a furry-pet lover, who hates it when they are fed to snakes.. she is also mostly vegetarian, against fur and leather, etc.. and I am just the opposite. Still, we are best friends on earth and have been through thick and thin in the last ten years or so.. I just respect her tolerance level and don't go overboard feeding snakes when she's over; she likes them actually and is not opposed to feeding f/t, but the whole constriction thing gets her..
That was pretty nasty to say "avoid Intalian women" Jafis. I myself am mostly Italian, and heh, I will be a better wife to my fiancee than any woman ever was. Thanks for putting my nationality down.

Re: Hehe, got myself into a fine bit of a pickle here folks...
Wow thanks for all the great info!
Well I kinda tested teh waters last night, I fed a frozen pinkie to James the rescued garter snake. She was ok with that as long as it was f/t. So that went well. Course a pinkie is one thing, a fuzzy is a whole nuther animal, lol. Good news is she likes snakes!! She tryed to hold James before we fed him, but being wild caught he kinda fiesty or "Mean as hell" which ever you prefer.
So now the game of snake and rat begins! I'll keep you all updated! :salute:

Well considering there's only one day out of seven that your snake eats you really don't have to feed it in front of her if it bothers her.

Re: Hehe, got myself into a fine bit of a pickle here folks...
If she has an ounce of intellegence, she should understand the natural food chain and not worry about it.
Then there's always frozen/thawed. She might be able to take that a little better than seeing a snake actually kill a rat in front of her face.

Jafis, I recommend the following: If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

racism and prejudice make me sad. doesn't matter who it's against... whether it's against a critter or a person... :(

yeah I will agree with that.
my SO has no problem with my BP/s. he even takes them out on occasion when he wants to see them. he just cant tolerate the squeaking when the snake strikes.
so I either do it when he isnt here, like during a work day, or I ask him if he could retire to the bedroom or so for a half hour while I "do the nasty" LOL
now if I could only get him to be so agreeable about me getting a rainbow boa I'd be all set :P

LOL! Classic!
We talked aobut it some and she loves snakes, but really doesnt ever want to see a live feeding. If its f/t then shes game. While I'm still on live now, who knows maybe I'll switch? Nah, lol... :sabduel:

That's cool! :carrot: The honey digs snakes...bonus for you man!
While I don't have any problem feeding live prey, I wouldn't want to stand and watch my snakes (or inverts) kill a live mouse. I'm a wuss and I think the squeaking would bug me because I adore fuzzy critters just as much as scaly and venomous ones. Now if it's a roach (fed to my inverts of course) heck yeah....make that thing squirm and fight for its life!!!!! :8:
