I dont even think we have a local animal shelter. Hmm well we probably do just never heard anything about it.

    Is the adoption free?

    I'm quite interested.

Just go to petfinder.com and type in guinea pig and your state and a list should come up of shelters that have pigs at the moment.

All shelters charge different prices as adoption fee's. I know here in MD some charge as little as $15 and others charge up to 45 for a fixed male and 65 for a fixed female.

Most shelters and rescues do charge a small fee to help them recover some money so they can help others.
On my local CL there is an ad for four free male piggets. Poor little guys. I would take them but don't have room to house four boars til I get them fixed.

You'll usually find free ones but do make sure you have the time to handle them and make sure you have the proper homes set up for them.

Also if you have a petco in your area, they often have a small animal adoption section with the material on all of the local adoption places.

Guinea pigs do best in cages, they can be prone to respiratory problems if they don't have ample venilation.
Ideal bedding is aspen. Our piggets enjoyed a fluffy dog bed to sleep in and lots of boxes to shape and move. We also gave ours a water bowl instead of a bottle but I think that's mainly personal preference. Guinea pigs are sociable, much like rats in that aspect and are much happier in pairs or trios.

Our pigs had a hide with alfalfa in it and outside would be where the rodent bedding is. Food dish; we dont give pellets, they never eat iot and very hard to switch them to it, we feed rodent diet with seed/ and all that stuff PLUS fresh veggies daily. you could also go outside and pick all sorts of grasses..the good grasses (look it up online) Just like humans and most mammals they need a companion. So possibly, if you get a fixed male get him a fixed female, or if not fixed get two of same sex..unless you want to breed. Also you dont have to have anothe rguineapig for a companion but a small rabbit. I like the lion heads. Either way a large rabbit with a guineapig is ok too. Just know they need company, a hide, comfort bedding, regular bedding food, fresh food and water daily.

Re: how much are guinea pigs?
I'm sorry but you cannot keep a guinea pig with a rabbit. Their nutritional requirements are different and they may fight.

Guinea Pigs NEED Vitamin C Fortified(less than 6 months old feed) guinea pig pellets, preferably timothy hay based. They cannot make their own Vit. C in their bodies, so they need an outside source of it so they don't become deficient.

I keep my guinea pigs, 4 females and 3 males, in separated large but low rubbermaid tubs without lids. They have constant access to Mazuri Guinea Pig pellets via food hoppers and always have fresh water in their water bottles(32oz size). I use a pelleted recycled paper bedding for them as well as kiln-dried pine shavings on top of that to help absorb the massive amounts of urine.

I also give fresh veggies and greens 3-4 times a week. These consist of dark leafy greens such as kale, mustard/collard greens, escarole, red leaf and green leaf lettuces, endive, radicchio, red cabbage(in small quantities), parsley, cilantro, etc. They also get small amounts of carrot, apple, banana, oranges.

Hope that helps and please don't use tanks. They don't allow enough air exchange and the ammonia will build up causing alot of respiratory problems.

You could get a rolling underbed sterilite container, and use some wire mesh and make a low barrier inside the tub. Would be easy to change out and would allow for them to see out and get good air exchange.
