A few mite questions
I found out i have mites. I have 2 snakes. How should i deal with this? I hear of prevent a mite. Also ive read about using ivermectin i have a bottle of ivermectin that i use to prevent heartworms on my dog. Its the kind for cattle. Can i use this? I hear 1cc to 1 quart water? Anyone else have ways they deal with this?

Re: A few mite questions
Provent a mite ... I've seen people that don't know what they're doing with homemade mixtures kill snakes ... unless you have a good amount of experience, provent -a- mite is probably going to be the safest thing.

I would not recommend the use a homemade brew either, as the main ingredients are often products that have not been tested for use with reptiles and that could cause nervous disorders and/or death.
This is where I buy Provent-A-Mite http://entirelypets.stores.yahoo.net/proventamite.html
Also you can check pet store specialized in reptiles they might have it.

Re: A few mite questions

1 oz. Nix to 3/4 gallon water, shake and make.
soak for 12 minutes. and any mites will be dead for sure. :)

You've probably been doing that for a while...while someone with no experience with homebrews could kill their snake.
FWIW...I took the advice of an oldschool herper and whipped up a homebrew some time ago...all I got out of it was one dead snake and one that barely survived.
With provent-a-mite readily available and at less than $30 a can.......telling a new keeper to whip up a homebrew probably isn't the best idea IMO...

Re: A few mite questions
This home brew came from A Virginia Boy and has served me well over the years. ;)

Straight from the site rules ...
"external links While we do allow linking to other sources, please do so only if the information is not already available here at BPNet and only for the purposes of promoting reasonable and appropriate discussion."
Lots of threads on this very site about Provent -a- Mite and mite treatments, I think your post might be a violation of the sites rules?

Re: A few mite questions
Well it won't allow me to edit the post so I'll go ahead and sum things up...
pam is like $20 a can and the eqate bedding spray is only $4 a can..equate and pam are have the same ingredients so your basicly getting thee same product alot cheaper..you can get equate bedding spray at almost every walmart...

Not trying be mean or start drama...but you don't know what you're talking about.
While that Equate stuff and PAM might be permethrin-based insecticides...there are so many different types of permethrins out there...some are relatively safe for reptiles when used properly and others are deadly.

And when the margin of error between being mixed properly and being mixed into something that is dangerous to your animals is as minute as it is in this case, it's not something that should be advocated as a mite remedy for beginners in my opinion ... and I'm quite positive that I know what I'm talking about ... I've gotten enough phone calls in the middle of the night from ball python owners who's snakes were writhing around on their backs after being sprayed with homemade permethrin solutions to always recommend PAM unless the person has a ton of experience.
It never ceases to amaze me how for some people a few dollars is enough to want them to take short cuts and risk the health and life of a living creature.

I have only had mites one time... I used Pam for that one time and it worked great but recently I have talked to a few differen't breeders and they have told me not to waste the money because it works just as good for literally a tenth of the price. It's the same exact thing, except one is called PAM and cost $20.00 and one is called Equate and cost $3.00!

Adam, it's not about taking shortcuts or even mixing solutions. I'm talking about going to walmart and paying 3 dollars for the same can that you recommend that people buy that cost $20.
edit:
Guys, I don't feel like a drawn out argument over this. I simply posted that there are alternatives to PAM, I’ll use Equate as a cheaper version of PAM, used exactly like PAM. I do not doubt that their are similar products out there that are unsafe, especially when misused as is PAM itself is misused. I am not pushing any specific product, all I am posting is an alternative as Ed Clark did with Nix. Which is also a good treatment as I've read if used properly.
No need to get personal or offensive, anyone interested can search countless threads on PAM, Equate and other Mite treatments and preventions.
Have a nice day!

That's a lie ... they are not the same thing ... Provent a mite is federally approved by the FDA for treating snake mites ... the other is a lice/flea treatment approved by the FDA for that purpose ... using equate to treat mites on snakes is actually a violation of federal law (look it up).
But here's the real kicker ... I have 500+ animals and a can of provent a mite lasts me well over a year. When you're a "flipper" or a breeder that is constantly moving animals in and out of your collection and taking animals to and from shows, you're risk for mites is HUGE and you have to spray spray spray every day ... OF COURSE those guys are looking for "cheap" outs ... they probably use a can a weekend ... For a small time hobbyist like yourself with a couple of animals, what's the big deal ... a can of PAM will probably last you 5 years?? Are you telling me that the difference of $15 for a federally approved and tested product that is 100% safe for your animal spread out over 5 years isn't worth it?

Can we all stop looking for shortcuts when it comes to our animal's care? Would you take chances like that with your baby? Lets see, Gerber baby food or Scurvy Sam's brand that was made in his moldy/mildewed basement by hand between rounds of nose picking and ass scratching?

Re: A few mite questions
It's a can, exactly the same as PAM, exactly the same size as PAM, you could paint a can of PAM black and a can of Equate Black and have them analyzed and they are the same stuff!! But pam is marketed for snakes.
Nix is a powder and requires mixing, Equate is EXACTLY like PAM and used the same manor! Same instructions! If you misuse PAM you can kill your snakes too!!
Same for sterilite tubs, were these marketed for keeping snakes? I can go on Reptiletubs.com and buy $10.00 tubs or I can buy at Wal-Mart for $2.00!
It's not about a short cut or being cheap, it's why the heck should anyone pay more for the same stuff!! It's like one McDonald's sells a Big Mac for $5.00 and the McDonald's next to it sells the same hamburger called a Big Mack for $1.00, which would you go to? Does that make you cheap or is another word for it SMART!!
I'm not going to go into it anymore...just giving a cheaper alternative to the same product. ;)

Do you believe everything you read? Provent a mite has been FDA approved for the treatment of mites in reptiles. Therefore it has been put through testing to determine the actual ingredients. As we all know, manufacturers have been known to be less than accurate about the quality of ingredients used in their products. You say its the same and it may very well be. However, it has not been put through the rigorous testing to prove it. You have become quite an expert in a short time with very little experience. Very impressive!

I'm not claiming to be an expert at all...I've just done my homework. Your right provent a mite is FDA approved for the treatment of mites in reptiles...probably because it's marketed as a reptile treatment...I'm sure that Equate would pass FDA just as well...but why would they try to? when it's marketed for humans...it's the same stuff.
Here's another testimonial about it...

You could have a testimonial from the pope and it wouldn't change the facts. But you go ahead and save a few bucks. As Adam mentioned, with over 500 snakes a can of PAM lasts him over a year.

So would a can of equate! For $17 less.
There are 100's of testimonials of people who've used Equate as PAM with great success all over on other forums. The same way Ed Clark and others have had success with Nix when used properly. Can you harm or kill your snakes if misused, YES. Can you very easily kill your snake with PAM if misused (even though it states for Reptiles)...YES!
Guys, I'm not arguing here. Use PAM if you want to pay $20.00, it's a great product used by many many people in the hobby. If you want the same effect with the same usage as PAM, others have used Equate as an alternative for $4.00 purchased at any Wal-Mart. If you prefer another method and don't mind the mixing, Nix is also another alternative used by many as well as stated by Ed. I personally prefer a spray like PAM or Equate rather than Nix, but I am not harassing those who use Nix.
To each his own!
