125g Oscar/community tank

Here's Mark's tank.. though we both do maintenance on it. :) It houses two adult Oscars, five clawed frogs, a redfin cichlid (always forget his latin name..) one livingstoni cichlid, a syndontis cat, an otto algae eater, an unidentified catfish and two plecos. Now, many people on many aquarium forums would decry our tank and say it is overcrowded, or the species are incompatible.. I have had this tank running for years with no casualties. A few large goldfish I had in here were getting nipped up, and I moved them to another tank. So here's the tank. :) Sorry the overvoew pic is blurred; my camera does that when I turn the flash off..??
I have to add, the Livingstoni is my pride and joy. I raised him from an inchlong tiny thing, to the 6 inch beast he is now! (he is brown/white, near the right side of tank.)
Sorry Aleesh; I tried like heck to get a pic of Stealth the pleco, but he would not show his face. :)

MooMoo again with Oscars "White Thing" and "Fred." (Mark named them, lol.) Sadly, Fred came to us with Hole-in-Head; it has stayed the same since we got him, doesn't seem to be clearing up nor getting worse.. we keep this tank clean though, running a cannister Marineland filter in addition to a HOB Marineland 2-chamber rated for a 75g.

Those are great pics Jen! I love fish tanks but have not had much luck with them so gave up:( I love MooMoo he is soooooo cute:D

heehee mine is considered overpopulated as well. but i do plenty of water changes and am watching to see if i'll have to move/rehome any of the fish.

it's a 77 gallon tank with two oscars, a veija, venustas, two texas cichlids, some catfish and a large pleco. definitely grossly overcrowded... but... they are doing great ;)

tell stealth to stop moving and show me his cute little self! my largest pleco is about 13"

Thanks! Moo is actually a female; the girls get larger, around 6 inches.

Thanks; I like to be an independent thinker with regard to "overcrowding" tanks. Of course, I never advocate putting species together that have different temperature and water type requirements.. but food you can work around. As long as everyone's getting the type of food they need, it's fine, even if you have to feed on opposite ends of the tank.
Do you have a link to some pics of your tanks? I do remember seeing them before and they looked awesome from what I remember!

exactly. the rules are so rigid in some cases regarding fish. i have two beautiful bichers in my community 210 tank... and they are doing great. most people would run screaming from a bicher in a community tank... but it works for us ;)

Yeah, that's the same with Oscars, and even the livingstoni.. but no one bothers anyone else. The regular Oscar does love to jump out of the water to take food from your hand, but he is smart and seems to know how to land right back in. We keep the heavy glass lids on all the time though or he might just end up on the floor!

Nice looking setups :cool: .I miss having my pirhana setup tank :( .Well i can look at your tank pics i guess lol.

Of course ya can! :) No tank cleaning required that way, either. :)

my computer is being a pain in the butt... so my nice long post is gone. but the jest of it was... if you leave, make sure your caregiver knows your oscars are jumpers. my girlfriend went out of town and the person didn't think it was important to put the rock on the lid... and she returned to an "out of water" oscar :(

Ouch.. I would definately tell that to anyone who feeds them. We plan on going on a honeymoon this winter (not in the summer after the wedding, as we want to go out West and don't want it to be too hot..) I plan on leaving notes with every animal's little "quirks" but my friend is an excellent caregiver and has more animals than me, so I trust her completely. :) I think that everyone with animals should think beforehand and have a few trusworthy people (who are also reliable and have a lot of common sense) to look after thair animals!
