    California exotic pet laws
I have a question about exotic pets in Cali. I live in Oregon right now with 2 ball pythons, 2 leopard geckos and one tarantula. I plan on moving to San Fran in a couple of years, and I am hoping that I can legally take my babies with me. Does anyone know what the laws and regulations in Cali are regarding exotic pets such as mine? Please let me know, I would die before I would give up my I would ever give up my babies!
    Thanks so much

I live in Ohio so I'm not familiar with the laws in Califorinia. If you look on google I'm sure you could find out what's legal and what's not. Usually if there is a law against owning certain snakes it pertains to length of the snake. Also check the specific ordinances for San Francisco as well as the state.

Monitors and constrictors are prohibited in san Francisco. You should probaly call the relevant authirites to be sure. I think "technically" even ball pythons are prohibited. I'm pretty sure the regulations were okay with geckos and tarantulas, as well as scorpians and such.
I was looking into it for a visit, and was vetoed completely. I can basically take my cornsnake and my dogs. LOL. Actually.. I'm not sure if Tegus would fall into the monitor catagory, but I suspect so.(Legally I mean)

I used to live in San Francisco, and I didn't have a problem, but you can't sell them in the city, and they are technically illegal, I guess.

What are you going to do if someone there turns you in for having illegal reptiles? I would find somewhere else to live if its possible. This way you do not place your reptiles lives in danger(i have heard they kill reptiles that are illegal in some states) and you dont end up losing money and your reptiles.

I dunno! Like I said before I would DIE before leaving my balls, or leopard geckos, or my spider. I will do it illegally if need be, or I guess not move to San FraN. I can move to a suburb if need be. But I refuse to let my babies go! Check them out in my picture files or whatever! Y'all can check out my MYSPACE page if you like, there are several pics of the babies there

Not true at all.I live in Illinois and in Galesburg Illinois its illegal to own ANY constricting snakes! This includes corn snakes! If you are caught with a illegal snake they will prosecute you.Why is this you say? Its because of someone idiot who liked to scare old ladies with his snakes:mad: .Now everyone else pays for it.

If you google there are literally dozens of references to people keeping bps in San Fran. Illegal - yes as the link proved but unenforceable and unenforced as far as I can see. At the end of the day its a judgement call but I suspect most people would just do it.

You are missing my whole point here.Who cares what others do in San Fran,i am just pointing out if you know something is illegal why take the chance. All they need is one complaint and your reptiles are GONE and there is nothing you can do about it because you know they are illegal. To many other states to move to that are not banning reptiles.

I think the most helpful thing here would be to hear from some natives.

I'm not trying to be argumentative for the sake of it here but it just seems to me that one should consider everything whilst moving house to such a great city. A silly and unenforced law is just one aspect.

Sadly in the USA it does make sense to find out about the animals that are allowed or not allowed in certain states. Its up to the poster of this thread of what will happen and not either of us to be truthfull.
