Re: New snake suggestions
Moved to general herp.
It is not considered healthy to house more than one snake together, you are correct. Disease and parasite transmission, as well as cannibalism are all possibilities, and stress is almost certain.
There are many other snakes (and lizards) that would make a fine choice as a second herp. What do you have in mind for your new herp? Any size/color/personality/etc preferences? I could name off 100 animals you could get.. so give us a little help. :)
Re: New snake suggestions
That is a really though question to ask! I would just go through caresheets and pictures and try to pick whatever interests you the most.

Re: New snake suggestions
Lol...I know its tough...truth be told I don't really have anything in mind, and I haven't been to interested in anything i've seen in the pet stores. I would like something colorfull, but not to hard to take care of, and something that I can house in a 50 - 75 gallon aquarium for its entire life.
Does that help at least a little bit?

Re: New snake suggestions
Colorful, easy to care for and small.. well that includes dozens of colubrid species (kings, milks, corns, rat snakes, etc etc) Most of them don't need anything bigger than a 20 gallon tank when they're full grown. I'll show you a few of mine:
albino nelson's milksnake

normal and anerythristic kenyan sand boas (not colubrids, but they fit in your requirements)

greybanded kingsnake (the rest of him continues this pattern)

tangerine honduran milksnake

if you want an all black snake.. mexican black king

hypomelanistic tangerine honduran milksnake

the one hanging out on the cage is a jungle carpet python.. the one IN the cage doesn't fit your requirements. :)

normal and albino stripe california kingsnakes

Whew that's a lot of pics.. if you have any questions, don't hesitate. :)
Re: New snake suggestions
sinaloan milk snake? stunning colours and fairly easy to care for. Definately a one per tank deal though.
There was a stunning snake available once called a sunbeam? ( i think) that was small and burrowed most of the time but was the most beautiful irridecent animal I have ever seen.
Or if you decide to go down the big beast route;
If your thinking of commiting to a huge display tank for a large animal and don't mind devoting a bit of time beforehand researching you could go for a green iguana (6 foot of lizard is impressive - but it's also tricky) or one of the larger chameleons (sp?).
Or if you were thinking of sticking with snakes possibly a nice red tail or brazilian rainbow boa?
I recomend just looking at pics of what is available till you find the one that makes you dribble on your keyboard. :D
Then start reading up on how to keep it alive. I always had a hankering for flying dragons myself but they are still way too advanced for me right now.

Re: New snake suggestions
i have a beautiful exo terra enclosure with water in the bottom... i have endlers (fish) and two firebelly toads in the bottom. in the top i have vines and plants... and 3 anoles live up there. i have live bamboo which connects the top of the enclosure to the water for the anoles to run down, grab a drink and go back up again :)
let me see if i have a pic for you ;)

Re: New snake suggestions
Ummmm, April?????? Wouldn't your JCP be too big? I've read in diff. places that they get to be 6-8'. Was that incorrect??
R.
Re: New snake suggestions
JCP are slim snakes.. and a 75 gallon tank is 4' long.. plenty big.
Re: New snake suggestions
Wow...thanks for all the pics guys! I especially liked the look of the carpet python. A nice terrarium would be lots of fun however as well. I'd like to figure some way to build a nice waterfall, but thats besides the point. If anyone else has nice terrarium setups i'd love to see em!

Re: New snake suggestions
The cool thing about carpet pythons is that they (expecially when young) are semi-arboreal.. they like to climb. They don't hide a lot, so for a display snake, they're one of the better choices.
Babies are often skittish, some are nippy, but generally they calm down pretty well.
This is my baby male jungle carpet python.. the color and contrast actually get brighter as the snake ages.

Re: New snake suggestions
Thx for the clarification, April!
Good luck Ryan in finding a new pet to add to your collection!! :)
I can vouch for the Kenyan and the Nelson's! They're pretty critters. After seeing April's we went and got an anery Kenyan and an albino Nelson's. We also got a Stimson's python. He'll stay pretty small too. But good luck in your deciding!
