Do some of you really have Cobra's
Hi,
I'm new to this site, some really nice pics on here. I have no experience with venomous snakes but was just wondering a few things.
1. Do you have to have a special license to keep them. If so what do you do to get one. I know that it is different for each country etc but just wondering who here has licenses etc
2. How do you do general maintenance with these, like feeding, watering and cleaning. Do you take them out of their cages?
3. What housing arrangements would you need for these snakes.
4. And if anyone has any pics of their cobras could you post them please, Id love to see them
Thanks
Dave

you need a specific permit for exotic venomous although some states dont permit them.
2- i hook my adults (monacleds) quite often and have no problems.
3- i have no idea of the brand of mine but you need a specific cage that is heavily locked to prevent escape.
4- ive got a pic of a baby albino monacled laying around... ill edit my post and put it in:)
edit- heres a link to a couple for sale:)

that link is strictly for the picture... i would never sell a cobra to someone that isnt experienced.
Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
thanks uro1001 that pic is great
I knew the link was just for the pic, no one with experience would try sell to someone without.
I think the cobras look great but I wouldn't get any, well not yet anyway, maybe after reading more about them and going to vist an experienced keeper for advise for a long time.
Im gonna stick to no venomous snakes for now :)
Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
i dont know some venomous species of snake are very beautifu l but i would never buy one i would be too tempted to take it out all the time and my dumb ass would end up getting bit. they are very beautiful though.
Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
lol yea the reward isn't worth the risk, how long do you have to get to the hospital after a cobra bite anyways?

Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
You know that's something I've often wondered about when people keep hots. Do you have to keep the specific anti-venom in your home to accompany you to the hospital? I wouldn't think just any regular ER has a wide variety of anti-venoms for the variety of hots available on the market.
We used to live in Michigan. I always thought it incredibly odd that MI has rules up the ying yang with regards to things like wolf-dog crosses but you can buy a gaboon viper off the internet and keep it without any permit needed at all (at least where I lived in northern MI you could).

I believe anti venom, is too expensive for people to just stock all the time, it also doesn't have a long shelf life if my memory serves me correct. The hospitals would stock it if it were in a hot snake hot spot. Like texas, FL, CA the hospitals often stock viper antivenom because the chances of someone comming into contact with a hot even in the wild is high on its own.

Here is a list of ALL the antivenom The Miami Dade Fire Rescue keeps in stock.

Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
That's a good stock! They even have Gabby and Bushmaster antivenoms!
Here's the page(same site) for info on who to call if you get bitten.

   Those last two are.... ughhh. :puke:
I remember seeing a picture of a bite at a serpentarium where the flesh and muscle on the forearm had totally been eaten away, leaving bone exposed.
Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
I believe it. Hemotoxins are serious flesh eaters. I think its Dr. Sean Bush that always says, "Time is tissue"

I'm having lunch now! No problem. :P Thats some nasty bites.
Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
Those pics were amazing! I mean, I feel sorry for those that were bitten, but... damn.. I'm amazed at the power that's packed behind those snakes venom. Does the venom really eat the skin away like that? or did the doc's have to peel all 3 major layers of skin off to preserve the area around it?
Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
Those pictures are the result of a Cytotoxic (cell destroying) envenomation.
Cobras are generally neurotoxic (Nerve destroying).
I doubt those wounds were from a cobra.
Here is a pic of a Cape Cobra. One of these chaps put me on life support for seven days some time back.

Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
Woo wee. Hots are some of the prettiest snakes ever. I just love their scales, all ridge and what not, with crazy horns or eyelashes. Love EM!
Re: Do some of you really have Cobra's
There are not mainy cobra species that have a predominate amount of Cyto-toxin in there venom as cobra are generally Nero-toxic (nerve destroying).
Cyto-toxic (cell destroying) is mainly found in vipers and Adders while Nero-toxin is mainly found in cobra (Elapidae).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that some states do actually require the owners of hots to keep their own supply of anti-venom as part of regulation. I can't remember where I read it, but I'm positive that I did.
It being quite expensive would bethe exact fuel for that, hospitals (well in the Canadian system where they aren't allowed to generate a profit) don't have a lot of 'slush funds' to operate off - sorry if this sounds harsh, but if you can't afford the anti venom on your own knowing you're keeping animals that might cause you to need it... Well, you shouldn't have them then.
Precisely because it is expensive... Were I to own any hots I would insist on keeping my own supply at all times.
