After reading a chapter in the Barker's book about cleaning and husbandry and water bowl maintenance, I felt completely "called out" by their "wet thumb" method cleaning being totally ineffective. Basically contaminating and re-contaminating over and over.

And besides, who really wants to sanitize a large number of heavy water bowls week after week every time you change the water.

I finally got motivated and ordered some of those 16 oz deli cups that fit in the water bowl.

A case of 500 cost me $38.99 shipped. Got here in 2 days, although they are pretty close to me, down in VA Beach.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up to the good source.

By "wet thumb" do you mean handwashing? I put my water bowels in the dishwasher. Having two bowels and only one snake, this isnt really a pain for me. Plus it's a little more envirnomentally friendly. Just wondering, Are those made of styrofoam?

I get my deli cup water bowls from there too.. fast shipping for me too.

I also get unprinted newspaper sheets for substrate for my larger cages and tubs.. and centerfold paper towels for substrate of my shoeboxes, and for general scrubbing of all cages.

The so called "wet thumb" method of poor water bowl maintenence, as described in the barker's book, involves the practice of pulling a dirty water bowl out of a cage, cleaning it, and placing that same dirty hand on the water bowl (usually with a thumb inside the bowl, hence the wet thumb) and you've basically just recontaminated your water bowl. For a large collection, it does not seem practical to be washing you hands in between cleaning each cage, water bowl, etc.

Using the disposable deli cups greatly decreases the spread of bacteria, according to the Barkers.

And Mendel, like Adam said, you would really enjoy the Barker's book. It is VERY thorough and way over my head at times. They are scientists really, and it is written from the perspective. Nothing against Kevin's book, it is a great reference for all of us lay people, but in comparison, the NERD book would be for fifth graders while the Barker's would be for the college level. Just to put it in perspective.

Wait a sec...This thread is about deli cups as water bowls? I use them as decorative potpourri bowls. Right now I have 312 around my abode....

That makes alot of sense, I would agree at first why the hassle but I think many people don't realize that in some collections there is more money tied up in them than can be fathomed. There is no room for cutting corners, if you do your digging your own grave.




I've been using the deli's for a while now...awesome is all I can say. Who would have thought so much joy could come from a little plastic cup - :ROFL: I found a Gordon's Food Service outlet not far from where I work, no shipping and the cups are cheaper than I found online initially.

Most of us use 4" PVC couplers from Home Depot

or those heavy 5" ceramic water bowls....
