New to Probing
Hey Hey Hey HEY,
I got some probes.
I've been reading about it all morning now on the NET and so far this is what I've learned.
I need to lube it up with KY Gel or water, and insert it towards the tail gently but kinda in a strong manner.
If it goes deep its a boy and a girl it stops early.
I think it was like 2 - 4 or 5 scales for a girl and anything over that its a boy!
I also heard it is kinda bouncy at the end its a boy and if its sorta hard its a girl?! and I little blood happens once in a while?? *scary*
I've already ask the vet if she can but she hasnt the tools, and doesnt know how to anyway. So I guess I'm on my own!
Give me some pointers if you could, and I'll keep reading!
THANKS Gang!

More like possible permanent Damage... I wouldn't see it as a good thing or a laughing matter... best of luck to you on learning though! ;)
I'm going to be investing in some probes myself here in the near future...:)
Always a good thing to know and have experience in, especially when you are breeding, have intent to breed or for buying and making sure what your getting.

Not being mean or rude here, you COULD hurt your snake permanantly if probed wrong.I do not suggest you doing this "blindly" until you have someone show you in person. If your vet does not know how to probe i kinda wonder if she is a REAL herp vet.It might seem not knowing how to probe is not a big issue to some,it just seems weird that a vet not knowing how to do it.

Yeah, something so simple as sexing a snake is something any vet working with reptiles should know...Wether they are an actual herp vet or not.

agreed
I had my vet show me how to do it and then she let me try while supervising me.
I ordered my own probes and I'm comfortable doing it now but before I had professional direction there is now way I would have tried.

My vet isn't a herp vet.
If I had a herp vet in the city I would go to them.
She has had snakes for a while and has experience with them, she seems to know everything else, other then how to sex them.
She even helped my BP will his poop problem. We gave him some Olive Oil! YUMMY!
anyway one of my managers at work used to be big into snakes and I asked him if he knew how to do it.
He does so he's gonna come over and give me a hand.
I can't wait to see who is a girl and who is a boy. Hopefully I wont have to change there names! lol

I dont think giving your snake olive oil is a good idea  .

Re: New to Probing
yeah that doesn't sound good
Oil is something you'd give to ferrets to help them with blockage.
I think it's time for you to find a new vet.
-
Re: New to Probing
Yes and when you give mammals oil, it's usually mineral oil so it doesn't react with them negatively.
I also agree that you may need to find a new vet, especially if she doesn't know that snakes may not have a bowel movement for months.
-
Re: New to Probing
MINERAL OIL! HEY! Thats it!
Its because she was constipated.
By the way "SatanicIntention" I do not recall ever telling you the amount of time it had been since my BP had gone poo poo!
I had also told you I do not have a "herp" vet in the city and like I said before I would go to them if I had one.
The vet I go to right now is great and I will continue to go to her.
I appreciate your concerns.
But anyway people, I do realize you love to attack me, BUT for some odd reason I remember this thread being about "How to Probe a snake", not about "Jonny2184 needs a new vet".
Well they shipped my probes and I cannot wait to see if my corn will be Mitch or Mitchel. Right now heshe is a Mitch!
I read on the net some guy said to sex a BP but looking at the way it's tail ends, and not by probes because you can hurt them. He says it takes practice and out of like 19 snakes he sexed them all correctly without a probe.
I was checking my snakes rear last night and it does end pretty fast so I hope shes a girl.
I measured her last night and shes like 3'3" and about 1year 4months.
I forgot to measure her girth. I will have to do it this weekend!
Does anyone know if the snakes actually bite when you probe them. My BP has never ever hissed or bitten, I would be freaked if she did!?!

Re: New to Probing
Maybe this will help with your research Not ball pythons but gives you a good idea. Good Luck Larry

Re: New to Probing
I just noticed that I have received a lot of "negative" feedback on this post.
A month after the post was ended. *weird*
3 of them actually...
In any case I kind of feel I might owe someone an apology?
I do know one person that may want apology is Becky. Sorry!
Personally I didn't mean to be sarcatic but it seems everytime I post a question looking for help on any thing to do with my snakes some people start to tell me what I'm doing wrong and totally go off topic.
I do understand that your only trying to be helpful but I personally felt like I was being told that I was "WRONG". That I'm going to a vet that doesn't know what they are doing. It kind of hurt a little. It kind of hurt because your telling me I'm not taking care of the snakes the best possible way!
But perhaps I did jump too fast. I feel my vet is very good. I've been going to her since I've had pets. I trust her and I feel I'm giving my snakes the best possible care they can get. I might not be perfect. No one is, I'm doing a lot better then many many snakes keepers out there.
anyway I will end it here and apologize to anyone I've offended.
I do value everyone's input, and take into consideration everything you all tell me.
Sorry for being such a prick.
Talk to you laterz
PS- I am getting a fella who knows how to probe to come over to my place and give me a hand. I'll let him do one of the snakes and maybe I can try it on the other.

I dont think anyone is attacking you here,we just try to help members as much as we are able. Sometimes the best info kinda hits deep down before it shows the true meanings of our words and thier meaning. Its great that you are having someone show you probing on a hands on level  .Let us know how it goes.
