Bedding for humans
Just looking for a little insight here. My wife and I are in desperate need of a new *quality* mattress. I don't know what happened with the current one its only 2 ish years old and is a brand name (sealy i think) but it plain sucks!
My wife and I sleep very close to each other and neither one of us weighs that much, I'm around 150lbs I think and she is barely over 100lbs (she's a shorty LOL). Anyway currently the mattress seems to sink in the middle but I can't believe after little more than 2yrs it would be shot already!
Currently we have a full size bed and we have flipped and rotated the dang thing just about every degree we can think of. I even reinforced the frame this summer to no avail. part of the reinforcing was the addition of two cross members for added support but like I said still no good.
We asked for and got cash for christmas and are now on the hunt. We are ready to put some money down for GOOD set. We have about a grand cash we can put down otherwise financing is an option. Anyone have anything they would recommend? I don't quite get all the differences between tempurpedic/posturepedic etc but we are looking into those. Memory foam would rock but those really push the budget.
With my wife managing an equestrian school and me hunched over at user's desks or other contorted tight places, we need something that will actually relieve pressure at night. It's become normal to wake up with a back ache...some days are just worse than others.

Re: Bedding for humans
I have had my sealy posturpedic set for almost 6 years now and I love it. I spent close to 1000 on the set. I don't even flip it regularly either, but whenever I think of it. I work at FedEx as a ramp agent/supervisor and bust my butt on a daily basis. My girl drives almost four hours a day and then sits over a computer for almost eight hours. So we too need a good mattress to de-stress my body. I would buy another one without a second thought. Maybe you got a bad one? They usually come with a ten year warranty, I'd check that out. Did you keep the reciept? I've filed mine away for years now. Most people don't take them up on that warranty because you need the full paperwork to get a new one. Check it out!

Re: Bedding for humans
Thanks for the info Jimi, our current bed is just a standard mattress. Not one of the postur/tempor pedic ones we are looking into. I'm not completely positive on the brand name either at the moment.
I need to do some more searching I guess and learn what the terms mean and what will best fit our needs. There are a couple places in town where I live we checked at a while back but didn't have the money. There is also a "guy" I know who sells mattresses as a side business who owes me some cash but I am wondering about the brands he sells and on top of that he isn't usually available when we are...and skipped out on one confirmed appointment.
If I don't have spend a mint I won't but we are ready to "invest" in some healthy sleep.

Re: Bedding for humans
My husband and I had the same problem with a mattress 3 years ago that wasn't more than 2 or 3 years old. Sinking in the middle. He weighs about the same as you and I am just over 110. When we went to the mattress outlet they told us that full beds and queens don't offer a lot of support in the middle. King size beds have two twin size boxsprings so the support in the middle of the bed is great from the two boxsprings meeting together. We were already looking for a king anyway so we got one.
We got the Serta perfect sleeper though. ITs awesome, we have had it 3 years now and there's no sinking in the middle. I love it. So if you can I would look into getting a king size. And a little hint, Tax return season is just around the corner, if you wait about a month the mattress places all have huge sales cause everyone getting their returns :) thats how we got such an awesome deal on ours.

Re: Bedding for humans
well i own tempurpedic adjustable bed ,the one on the infomercial
And been sleeping on it for almost 2 years now .It cost alot specially at that time .i think it was alittle over $5,000 which i think you can buy for less now .i bought the king size and you might not care to have the adjustable part which was as more then the bed it self .
at the time i bought it everyone i know thought i was nuts to spend so much on that ,But once they had a chance to sleep in it for a night everyone said they would buy one.
I have had 3 back surgeries, and this bed is the only one that real seems to help
Plus you never have to flip it
and it comes with a 20 year warranty.
And if you take the cost of a descent priced normal bed cost $1000 and even if it last 10 years which most will not .by the time you purchase the second or third bed in the 20 year time frame .you will most likely have spent more then the tempurpedic cost .

My queen does this and you are right, it does help with the support. I weight about 170 and the little woman weighs about 115 and we have never felt any "giving" in the middle at all and we sleep pretty close too. I agree, go with the split box springs if you can...it is well worth the 20 bucks more to have it, plus if you have to go up any stairs or through any tight spots with them...they are lots easier. Mattresses bend, box springs don't.

Ouch!! A salesman would push their mattresses, everyday people will give their experience better than someone who gets paid to sell their mattresses. I don't see this as too far fetched, but that just my :2cent: sorry.

Re: Bedding for humans
All these comments are really making "cents" to me. Unfortunately our (house) bedroom is pretty small so we can't go to big. I am indefinitely going to re-measure the room and see if we go a step higher in size. It makes alot of sense what you guys are saying about the split box springs I will definitely talk to the wife about that. We where told something similar previously which is why I bought the cross member supports for the bed frame, but it may have already been to late and the reason we didn't notice a difference. I don't know how to tell if a box spring is still "good" or not. Another thing we considered is dropping the bed to the floor to prevent sag. It probably wouldn't look to pretty (not a priority for me) but I don't know if it cause other issues or not.
Anyone use a "pillow top"? One of things my wife says is that it feels like her bones (hip primarily) are going to poke out through her skin...that sounds lovely... So she wants something soft yet supportive overall.
Thanks again everyone keep the info and experiences coming! I may sneak out of work early today and try stop into one of the bedroom shops tonight for a look.

Re: Bedding for humans
When my girlfriend moved in she had a pillow top, but she like the one I had better and hers was newer. I think that's all preference bud. Good luck!

Re: Bedding for humans
I have a queen mattress, pillowtop on both sides, from Denver Mattress Co., and it is NOT a good one. I also wake up sore every morning. (and this was a $600 + mattress...)

Re: Bedding for humans
alot of my relatives have that memory foam matress it like 2000 bucks but they swear by them. they are ultra comfy too. it takes a little getting us to bacause if you turn in the middle of the night it takes a second for the matress to comform to your position. but they claim that with this matress it elimiates restless sleeping.

Re: Bedding for humans
An adjustable would so rock but its not going to happen due to price. I remember last year my wife and I tried one in the store...OMG! Even only laying there a couple minutes when the sales lady lifted the leg end it was so comfy. It released so much tension from my lower back I was amazed.

Re: Bedding for humans
i too have a back problem from a horse incident, and i have this mattress that is just great. unfortunatley, i just had to put it into the garage because i needed more room (i made an animal room, and got rid of my bed. ). If you were closer, i would give it to you, it is barely used, but, oh well. best of luck to you both.

Re: Bedding for humans
Amy,
Thanks for the thoughtful gesture! Now I have heard of "hardcore" herpers, but removing your own human sleeping space is just to much!
;)

Re: Bedding for humans
Ours is a pillowtop, and very cozy, although we do want to get one of those memory foam toppers for it rather than a whole expensive memory foam mattress. The toppers are expensive enough! We picked out ours though by going in, trying them out, and asking the staff about the cozy ones.
A warning though, skip the Sleep Number Bed! They're great for a year or two, but then develop an unfixable "pit" in the middle that you both fall into and it's incredibly uncomfortable. You end up spending half the night adjusting the dang thing rather than sleeping. Total rip.

Re: Bedding for humans
Well we went in tonight and checked some out again. I layed on the "deluxe" model tempurpedic for like 15 minutes...I always feel weird when someone I don't know is looking at me while laying in a bed, but dang was it nice! The prices are awfully high but we are still considering it. Its looking like at least 2k rather than 1k I had for some reason invisioned...and that's JUST for the mattress. We are looking at our options and have some ways we can save some money, she hasn't said it yet but I think the wife already has her mind made up! Her dad can build us a "foundation" so all we would end up needing is the mattress itself but still that's the majority of the price.
...I could buy a couple nice snakes for 2k...however a happy wife and a relieved back just might be worth it.

Re: Bedding for humans
For what it's worth, almost everyone I know with a pillow top mattress loved them the first year and then hated them increasingly after that (me included). You talk about sinking; think about the practical aspects on that one - there is absolutely nothing to stop a pillow top from sinking in, and even that small inch or two makes a HUGE difference.
You're going for the right bed with the TempurPedic, but don't skimp on the frame and foundation. Just like good carpeting isn't good carpeting without a good pad, the same is true for a bed and its base.
I will say though... one note about memory foam that no one in the stores will tell you; once it gets dirty, it's dirty. If you get odors in it, they're NOT coming out. That stuff is too dense to clean the way you can clean a standard mattress. Because it needs to 'breathe', protecting it with a plastic pad won't work, so make sure your mattress pads are good and keep them washed. I'm not trying to scare you there, but 2k for a mattress is a lot of money, so keep that in mind.
If you can't do the TempurPedic in the end, buy the best non memory foam mattress (not a pillow top) your money can buy and then top it with one of the better memory foam toppers. Another plus on that one is if you have the memory foam on top, the topper will absorb most of the wear and tear and the mattress itself will last longer. If you take the cleanliness of the memory foam into consideration, too, I would rather replace a $500.00 topper every 3-4 years than the whole mattress.
(By the way I'm new here and I'm laughing because my first post is about a bed, but hey, I know they're mega important!)

Re: Bedding for humans
Hey you get a gold star from me for your first post! You make an extremely valid point(s). I just discussed with my wife your post also. I think if we had her dad build us a nice foundation it would improve anything we bought. As it is we have a rail frame for the mattress which leaves little but the outside edges truly supported which is where the sag comes into play. Her dad is an outstanding carpenter...the furniture in our house a small but high quality snippet of his wood working experience. Like you say we can buy the best "normal" mattress for our money and add a slab of memory foam later when we have the money...if we think we need it.
This would be a very helpful route as the guy I know will give me an extra $100 off for computer work I've done for him plus he owes me $250 yet... I've just got to be able to get a hold of him at home!
So my next question then is are there others who have used just the memory foam pad and liked it just as well?

Re: Bedding for humans
Hm.. we have had a Sealy Posturepedic for over 5 years now and it is awesome..

Re: Bedding for humans
I got an email from the local guy and he has given me some ideas also. He said he carries a "visco" (I think) brand and explained a little about them to me. We will hopefully check them out tonight.

Re: Bedding for humans
Wish I could remember the brand name Heath but it's the one that they do the commerical for where the girl bounces up and down and the glass of wine doesn't spill....memory foam perhaps????
Anyways, Mike had to go into a sleep clinic last year for a sleep apnea study and spent a lot of nights on one. He was blown away by the sheer comfort of them. For someone who has had a lifelong problem with getting to sleep and staying asleep, and being hooked up to all manner of monitoring devices at the clinic, he said he had the most comfortable rest of his life on that type of mattress.
I imagine they are extremely expensive but I know when we go mattress shopping ourselves soon, I'll be looking for at least a topper of this foam (and thanks all for the info about how to keep it from getting nasty). I figure a very firm boxspring/mattress combo, topped with a layer of memory foam should do the trick quite nicely.
I've also considered adding another layer of comfort by putting a full sheepskin mattress pad over the foam. Sheepskin's been used for years in hospitals to provide comfort, ease bedsores and support undersized infants. It's a very natural fibre and would protect the foam much better than a standard mattress cover plus add another layer of snuggle comfort.

Re: Bedding for humans
we have the memory foam "slice of heaven" on top of our mattress. we picked it up at costco on sale a few years ago. it's GREAT. ;)

Re: Bedding for humans
My son has a memory foam on top of his mattress. We put it in a sleave from one of the allergy companies. The sleave is waterproof, dust-mite proof and it takes care of any problems with spills and odors.
I would suggest you look at National Allergy http://www.natlallergy.com/Default.asp?bhcd2=1168453237
to see what they have for your to cover your mattress (pad) with.
Here is their pads (which are reasonably priced):

good luck.

Re: Bedding for humans
Updating! Its been an eventful weekend in the bedroom...
With my father in law building our new bed frame and then the new mattress coming in last week we did a lot of changing around today. The frame is very nice looking and matches a dresser he made for our bedroom. The head/shelving part isn't done yet but oh well that's coming next. Last week I listed our old bed...complete setup for $200 half wondering if anyone would buy a used bed. Well someone did bite and we wanted it moved so we sold it for $150. We were happy to just have the thing gone as well as re-coop most of the cost of materials for the new frame. So anyway we got it moved in and picked up our mattress. Its pretty nice its a spring based mattress with what looks like a pillow top only it has the visco(sp) memory foam stuff in that part. My wife had purchased all of the dressings previously so for once I helped make the bed. She went all out with a nice padded cover, some 300 count "Egyptian cotton" sheets, thick down comforter, and topped of with a "micro mink" blanket.
Now never in my life would I have had a clue about such things and my wife tells me she saved a ton of money on all this stuff compared to what some it normally costs. By the time all this "stuff" was piled on to the bed I thought...sheesh we could have laid down some plywood and be just as comfortable with all this padding! Of course I realize this stuff will be on top of us. Anyway after we made the bed we both laid down and just soaked into all the padding for a good 15 minutes boy was it nice.
So for the first time in MANY nights I am looking forward to heading to bed here shortly and with the acception of adjusting to the new setup, looking forward to best night of sleep either of us has had in a long time.

Just think what your BPs think/feel when they get fresh bedding. That is why I use aspen. I wouldn't want to sleep on newspaper!

Re: Bedding for humans
What a great night! I didn't fall asleep right away but that's just due to things feeling different and adjusting. I must say though I am already feeling the benefits! I got out of bed this morning with absolutely no pain, pinches, or tension!
