What would you do if you won the lottery?
Randy and I were talking about what we would do if we won the Powerball tonight. I'm curious what you all would do?
Lets say you won $100 Million

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
Pay off my debts for sure.
Buy a house and a vineyard.
Start producing mead commercially.
Help out my parents (my mom is going through some expensive medical treatment and is unable to work at this time).

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
I'd buy me some awesome custom-made guitars from ESP. Then I'd get me some nice racks and some nice morphs. :) Then maybe put a whole lot into a savings account.

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
Go to college and get a master's in marine biology. Find 4 60's Marshall TV cabinets. Maybe get 1-2 more guitars. Buy a 34 Ford full fendered. Get a blue eyed lucy breeding set and give out the babies for free to people I know (and who know how to take care of them ;) ) And tell my grandma to quit her job.

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
Let's see, after taxes, figure $600K left (just a guess on the high side). Clark Howard, a self made millionaire and consumer radio guy based in Atlanta has advised instant millionaires before. A young girl called in who had won $5M in the lottery. He told her to immediately change her number to an unlisted number, as the lottery sells your contact information to different firms (investment, etc) who will be calling. Family and friends will start calling.
He told her that she would be left with $3M after taxes. He told her NOT to invest anything her first year, and if she wanted to blow 10% (or $300K) of it the first year - to do that, enjoy it, and don't worry about it. After that, even in an account that earns 4% each year, she could live off interest alone at about $100K a year.
What I'd do with it, Karl and I have talked about buying an RV and touring the country the first year and then from our travels, decide where we want to settle down. I'd like a nice house (nice meaning the right size for us, not too big, but big enough to have the animals we want), some nice land and he would probably work full time on his gift basket business (he makes gift baskets on the side - darn nice ones if I say so myself), and I would work with the ball pythons, and most likely would volunteer a lot. I would love to be a foster to homeless dogs, or even start a doggy day care.

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
I wish lol
Speaking now as a parent, I would have to say I would buy a house, not a huge house just one big enough for my family to be comfortable.
I would put a lot of it into trust funds for my children to use at certain ages. LIke for college, when they start their own families.
Other than that I would just save it.
Now if you had asked this question before I had kids. I would have said something totally different. Its weird how becoming a parent always makes you think about your children before anything else in the world. Knowing that every decision I make now could affect their future I am really careful when it comes to things like that.

For what they offer, you can't beat em. I bought my Alexi Laiho V for 920.00 and all I did was change the p/u. I bought my ESP Les Paul for 600.00 and I had SPerzel's, EMG's and Tone-Pro's looking abr-1 bridge. Any other brands would been like 1500.00 atleast

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
Hm.. seeing as we are fledgling property managers and getting it going on our own becoming landlords, Mark and I would invest in some higher quality rental units (townhouses, or more expensive rental units by Lake Erie.) Since we focus mainly on lower income places now, this would be a huge step up! I guess that much money would be enough for Mark to focus on that, and for me to create my dream of creating a horse boarding stable.. but that would probably be a few years down the road.. maybe we would look into building a trailer park (those landlords literally make a killing, renting out space and also owning the trailer.. woah!) or even creating a small subdivision that would somehow also be ecologically friendly and incorporate nature and the natural landscape; I know that it could be done.
Mark and I would buy an awesome piece of property; I place more value on the land itself than any house, as we could easily build what we want.. at least 400 acres, half mature, uncut woods, half pasture/hay land.. maybe dabble in some farming.. the woods would be uphill from the farmed land and I would dedicate, and get look into making sure it'd stay, a nature preserve type setting.
I would take a few months and strictly apply myself artistically; I hardly ever have anytime to pursue my love for oil and acrylic painting.
All this would be after a super-bash wedding in August. I would also pay to get both of our horses trained better, and look into buying a few more.. and of course, a pair of Pied BPs..
Quite honestly, I would quit my collection job.. it eats up a lot of my time. But I would never sit around and eat bonbons; I would volunteer at this local riding academy that caters to disabled people.
Or we would just offer our current landlord an obscene amount of cash for this land and house.. he would cave.. :)
I am too leary and do not trust most charities, so what I would do is, find a family that is truly working hard and give them an anonymous gift of a new home, paid for. I would definately hook my immediate family and friends up, because they are my life line and I would not be sane without them. And Marky, he would get a fully rebuilt 4x4 1970's CJ-7 Jeep.. :D

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
Its pretty simple for me, I would move to NH and buy NERD:). Then buy up all the land I can afford and just leave it and never sell (I cant stand to see a big beautiful piece of land being bulldozed to make way for a sub-division:mad: ) Then probably super upgrade our local soccer fields, these kids down here desearve way better then a field on top of the sewage drainage from surounding sub-divisions (ive played 15 years on it). Get my close family members set up for life then just put the rest in the bank, ill probably keep a million though barried out in the backyard in an old whisky bottle (just in case:)

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
I really think that there could be a future in building ecologically-minded communities.. the way I see it, a lot of land will get devoured up by these cookie-cutter subdivisions.. it would be much better off if I could get my hands on it and create something different. Let's say there's a lake sitting on about 80 acres.. what about clearing out secluded home-sites, leaving much of it naturally landscaped in native plants, creating ponds and encouraging habitat that's a;lready there..
Honestly, I think that this would be much better for the environment, than the disgusting practice of suburbanites buying 50 acres of rural land, massacre-ing the trees, shaving everything down on that parcel to two-inch lawn, and plopping a sMcMansion down that they'll move out of in two years.. :)

yeah a few houses on several acres in a lil comunity would be fine with me. The thing that really irks me is the people buying the land, lets say 50 acres and trying to cram over 100 housed on it, with about 5 feet distance between houses:(. Ive seen pics from a different field herping forum of land that was crawling with wildlife being completly destroyed for developement, breaks my heart to see those pics.

that is such bad advice! put it in the bank??? at the lowest interest you can get? much better to put it into mutual funds and make some real money. some fund companies are making 30-50% right now! think of how you could turn that money around and have it make you more money. that's why the rich stay rich... they invest their money and live off the interest!
i would buy some land and build houses for all the people i like there. it would be our own private 'area'. i would own the title of the land but they would be welcome to live their until they die. they couldn't pass it on to their kids or someone else... that way... i am gifting them the gift of a mortgage/rent free life and they could invest that money every month if they wish rather than paying for a mortgage... and i would have the equity in that real estate for my children's future.
i would buy homes for people i care about but don't want to live near... and again, keep it in my name but they get to live there. it would be like their own home... they could do whatever they wished with the house/land.
i would kick a whole bunch of the money to environmental charities, heifer.org, kiva - stuff like that.
i would set up a scholarship fund for homeschoolers who wish to go to college or university but don't have the funds.
i'd custom build my own home with snake rooms... fish tanks as walls... and it would be completely environmental in design. geo-thermal heating and solar energy as well. a huge house that would have everything i need so i don't have to go out if i don't want to. (i'm a hermit at heart).
i'd have a beautiful meditation area... and teaching area for my students as well.
i'd take trips to australia, ireland, india, thailand... i'd do a lot of travelling.
and the most fun thing of all i would do... i would go to the bank and take out about $50,000 all in $100 dollar bills... and then i'd go to the grocery stores and buy people's groceries. walk down the street and hand out money to people. go into malls and pay for people's purchases.
i'd go thru the phone book and just write down addresses on envelopes and mail people cash. no return address... just a gift of cash in the mail.
i'd throw a huge party for kids who live in poverty and gift them stuff. clothing, toys, new bedding... stuff they'd really enjoy. i know how much my kids love getting new bedding... ;)
and i'd invest the money so i'd be doing all of this off the interest. it would be a gift that would never stop giving :sunny:

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
I would give each member of my family a couple mil, set up a trust fund for my son and then give my church and other org. large donations.
Buy my house at Lake Anna and my condo at Ocean City, Md and a place in Breckenridge, Co and a small place in NYC ( that would be for my son so he could catch his NY Rangers games )
Then I would buy my bass boat and hit the national tourney trail bass fishing for a living :)
And I would spend a lot of time as a volunteer where ever needed.
I have watched a lot of those shows on instant lottery winners and all the experts say before you even claim the cash see a lawyer because there are ways to set it up and claim so the taxes don't hit ya so hard.
I play Mega Millions and Tues jackpot is 121 mil. Ahhhh dare to dream

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
Ill type this up pretending nothing would go to tax's....
1st off, I would move to Scottsdale, AZ (yes, I know, not a big step up for some who just got 100 mil) and open up a whole other facility for Phoenix Herp Soceity. Give alot to different type of charitys. When I got the new house, I would be sure that it was on 5 acres(SP)(i know, not alot) and would build a few facilitys for my snakes. Of course all of my family would see ALOT of it. I would buy another house out in Iowa with alot of land. I would donate to alot of the local volly depts in Iowa. I would deffenlty buy the all time best gun collection and get my dad his own collection. Obviously there would be alot more but I dont know what else.... and the reason for staying in AZ is so that I will still be able to work for the Phoenix Fire Department. Oh, and I would buy a ford f-350 raise the heck out of it and so many more things to it. Wooo
-
Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
Pay off debts.
Buy a house.
Buy toys.
Help family with what they need...
Breathe and then figure out what to do in the next 10 minutes...
-
Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
First and foremost....I hope I dont have a heart attack lol......
I would give close members of my family a couple mil, set my parents, sister, and grandparents up with a home with a couple mil laying on there beds for themselves to spend, etc.....
Invest alot of it....
I would definetly give my church and other organizations donations and what knot.....
Now for my own spendings....
My ultimate dream in life (which I hope will be possible in a couple yrs but would be much better if I won the loterry) is too own 10 acres of land, have a huge house with a facility in the back, a rat barn, and a bunch of pens for some sulcatas, savannahs, and tegus.....
Buy my dream car, a ferrari, along with a Nissan Titan.
Buy a ton of ball morphs....
And who knows what else....100 mil is A LOT of money lol

Not only does this thread rule for the subject matter, it rules because people brought up ESPs (MII-Deluxe here).
I would never "work" again. I know how people always say "well I have to keep busy so I'd continue to go to work blah blah blahhhh" - NEVER. I'd probably just dedicate my life to movies & music.

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?

I may not have been clear - he said even IF you only earn 4% off of savings, you could live off of the interest.
He advised that anyone that has new money should not try to invest the first year. They should take the first year to enjoy their "new found wealth" and get it out of their system, limiting the spending to 10%. During that year, they should also be studying investing to make well-informed decisions.

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
first get with my attorney and secure the money in several accounts! next go get a ferrari (enzo gt)! then let my wife go crazy and buy/design/build our dream home. after that go on a long vacation with and without the kids and live it up for a bit! i don't know after that :D
ps, 100 mil is plenty to live off of, in any kind of account! even if you only got 4% interest!:O

well honestly even in some very 'secure' mutual funds companies you could get closer to 10% which... on that kind of money is huge chunk of change ;)
but i get the point. thanks for clarifying. ;)

Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?
Pay off all school loans (woot!), get ourselves and my Mom moved and situated in our dream homes in Oregon, get Blue Gorgon better established and set up snakes (snake spree!) and all, oh yeah and get a car! Our dream homes aren't that fancy neither, so the rest we'd invest and we'd donate to charities we trust, etc. And make sure my Mom never has to work again.
