Where do You draw the line??
I was thinking about this today.. I know that it is fun and exciting to add new animals to your collection... I am not even just talking about herps.. just pets in general.. But where will you personally, draw the quantity line? Personally, I think I am there now; I do not plan on buying or acquiring any new snakes, horses, fish or anything else in the near future. I actually plan to sell one male BP (found a buyer) but I feel happy and content in my collection now; the only changes will be possibly if we do hatch out some Pastels ans Spiders; keeping one female of each, possibly a normal female. Financially and time-wise, I like the balance we are at now..
For the next few years, that's it.. so how about you?
So this brings another topic up.. I think we are due for a new List Thread! List everything you have... if you are so inclined. :D
1.0 Pastel BP, Ruger
1.0 Spider BP, Unnamed, possibly Faun
1.0 100% het orange ghost BP, Doc Bar
2.3 Normal BPs, "Sold", LaVey, Ginger, Bela, Luna
1.0 BCI, Apache
0.1 Solid Paint mare, Cuesta; "Docs Malbec" will be her reg'd name
0.1 grade tovero mare, Emma
2.3 clawed frogs; Little Moo, Mr Piggy, Mrs Piggy, MooMoo, Mega Moo
0.1.1 horned frogs; Benny, Scooter
1.0 black DSH cat, Inky
Fish: (unsexed):
2 Oscar cichlids: White Thing, Fred
1 unknown catfish
1 syndontis
1 livingstoni
1 redfin cichlid
2 giant plecos
Goldfish:
2.3 comets
5.6 orandas, telescopes, lionhead, ryukin
Rats:
1.8 breeders
25 unsexed babies
0.0.3 rat snake hatchlings, going back to my friend soon (hatched them for her.)

Re: Where do You draw the line??
Wow Jen you got alot of mouth's to feed......When it comes to ball's I haven't come up with a definitive number yet but I will soon , if I had to answer now I'd say somewhere in the 20's. More rat's would be necessary but hay I like breeding rat's I currently have 2.6 and they are great.

Re: Where do You draw the line??
I cant say I really limit myself. I go off of how much this animal will cost to feed and house now and in the far future. I think about the time that I have to put into the animals and wether this particular animal will have to have alot of attention (including cleaning etc). Right now, I could take a few more snakes but im not in any sort of rush. Im also considering just haulting on not buying any snakes at all so that when the time comes that I decied to keep HOTs, I wont have to sell many of my snakes. I will probably end up selling the hognoses but have not made up my mind on them yet. I dont plan on breeding snakes for years and years to come, but when I do decied to, it will be breeding venomous for the enjoyment.... and obviously not for the money (IMPOSSIBLE to keep not native venomous and when you do keep native venomous, you cant sell, trade or buy ANY.... all have to be wild cought or given to you..... there for I would have to give away all babies for free) <---sorry for going completly off topic.
Currently I keep....
1.2 western hognoses
1.0 yellow anaconda
1.0 false water cobra
other pets...
1 female Saint Benard x Golden Retriever (SP?all)
3 female small dogs...... I will not try to spell but they are common, small, and starts with a ch.....
2 fresh water aquiriums
1.1 het blizzard leapoard geckos
1 female kittin
I believe thats it.
Again, sorry if i went completly off topic in any area of this, couldnt help it.

Re: Where do You draw the line??
Well, right now - my line in my apartment is about 20 snakes - when we finally move into a house, that line will be re-defined - I'll be able to expand my rat production and my ball python housing. I'm already saving about $150 a month by breeding my own rats, vs. buying feeders every week.
-
Re: Where do You draw the line??
I'm done with getting critters. Unless westcoast puts something up that slaughters me ;) Which he's doing a good job at so far.
-
Re: Where do You draw the line??
Randy made me sign a paper that I'd not have more then 8 snakes while we still live in a apartment.
If we have a house and more room my limit would be whatever I'm comfortable feeding/housing/caring for.
Currently I have 6 snakes, a gecko, 3 ferrets and 2 cats.
I do think that some people really think they can do more then they can actually afford or have the time for and it's really easy to cross the line into being a hoarder.
*not pointing fingers I'm just saying in general for animal lovers*

Re: Where do You draw the line??
My BP collection will continue to grow. I will most likely get a couple more Blood python types. I am undecided about the Boas, but am considering selling the BCI's I have to keep a pair or 1.2 trio of B. C. longicauda instead. I doubt I will add any more coloubrids or other types of snakes. I doubt I will aquire any lizards or other reptiles. I may get an Avicularia versicolor tarantula. My breeder rodents should increase in number along with the Boids. I may get a couple more finches to keep my zebra pair company. I may end up with more cats. I doubt I will get any more dogs... if I do, it would be after I move into a larger house, and would be one spayed female dog to keep my neutered male company while no one is home to play with him.
My current colleciton:
1.0 Pastel BP
1.0 100% het. albino BP
3.2 '06 baby BPs produced here
1.0 CH '06 BP
0.1 WC subadult BP
0.1 CB '05? BP
0.1 CB adult BP
1.0 '05 hypo BCI Colombian
0.1 '05 high pink BCI Colombian
0.1 '05 BCI Hog Island
0.1 Borneo Short-tailed python
0.0.1 Suriname? iguana
1.6 breeder rats
1.2 breeder mice
1.1 white zebra finches
0.2 cats
1.0 Siberian Husky

Re: Where do You draw the line??
Next addition will be in February 1.1 Het Piedbald after that nothing until I start breeding in about 2 years from now, then I don’t know I guess I have not think of a limit yet . The only thing that could make me give in right now is a female Hog Island Boa but I will try to resist (it will be hard especially when going to Reptile Shows)
For now I am perfectly content with my little crew of
1.2 Normal
0.1 Spider
1.1 Pastel
1.1 Het Albino
And 1 dog

Re: Where do You draw the line??
This is a very good question .One that i ask myself everyday i clean cages .But truthfully i feel i have not even touched the point to where i would consider thinking of a limit yet.I do not breed or sell i normally just buy what i like, and i haven't even dabbled in Balls YET.When i really got into it about 3 years ago i bought the house im in now ,and well it's up for sale now and im moving to a place where i can build my own building to house all my little friends.so considering right now im in the works to pick up 7 more burms and acouple of tics ,and once i get into balls i think i will be in trouble then. I feel my limit will start when my passion stops
On a side note im new here and think this is only my second post,Have to say like it here so far

Re: Where do You draw the line??
i dont really draw a line so much . as long as i have space for and can afford to feed them then i will continue to add to the collection . i am however downsizing in a different way . i'm getting rid of the bcis (one female left who may be gravid) and am working with smaller spiecies of snakes . i pretty much only keep boids but am thinking about a couple hog nose snakes . by keeping smaller snakes it will give me the space to keep a larger number of them . there are several spiecies i am intersted in that i'd like to eventually breed . ball pythons will most likely be the largest snakes in my collection by this summer . as far as what i have right now , here's the list .
0.1 bci
0.4 normal ball pythons
1.1 pastel ball pythons
1.0 het hypo ball python
0.0.4 paulsonis
1.1 mexican rosy boas
0.1 coastal rosy boa
1.0.1 kenyen sand boas
0.0.4 house geckos
3.14.?? rats

As long as I have rack tubs available there is room for more Pythons.... :-)
and with it so easy to build your own rack.....:D
-
Re: Where do You draw the line??
The more serious I get into Ball Pythons, the less other pets I feel that I have time for....My list:
29 Ball Pythons
Approx 20 adult, 110 baby rats

1.1 Dogs (Pitbull and a Yellow Lab)
110 gallon saltwater tank (just had a heater failure lost all but 2 fish)

I think I will keep the BP's under 40 for now.....But once I convert the garage into a heated snake room...sky is the limit....

0.0.1 Zebra Danio
0.0.1 Chinese Algae Eater
1.0 Crowntail Betta
So, 8 pets, and 5 of them are fish. I have room for another pet, but my grandmother has told me "No more."
-
Re: Where do You draw the line??
I'm definatley not content yet, but the rules of the house are now, "if one animal comes in, another goes out", so i have to give up one of the snakes if i want a new one, and thats definatley not expanding my collection. soo....this is my current list
1.0 normal BP
0.1 pied BP
1.0 Het. Pied BP
1.0 Colombian RTB
0.2 grey hooded rats
0.1 black hooded rat
0.0.6 fish
1.0 Horse, Jackson
0.1 Shih Tzu X Pug, Shimona
My future list(including the ones i have now)...i would like
BPs
1.1 Mojaves
1.1 Pastels
3.3 Pieds
1.4 het. pied
1.1 Patternless
1.7 normals
and i want a lucy, but, i honestly doubt that will happen. lol.

0.1 albino
0.1 Suriname
Corns...
1.1 snow
1.1 candy cane
more than that....i just am having a brain fart. lol.
wow. thats a lot of snakes. i have always been against racks, because i like making a pretty set up, bit i have a feeling in the next few years i'm going to have to give up on that theory. lol.

i want
0.1 17hh dapple grey Oldenburg
0.2 German Shepherds (one black, and one white)
0.1 Great Dane

Re: Where do You draw the line??
Oldenburg horses are beautiful.. do you ride dressage or hunter/jumper Amy?
My wishlist is about 3 miles long.. mostly snakes, but I want to raise friesian and andalusian horses someday. :)

I do natural horseman ship actually, but when i get more advanced with a horse, i love jumping, so you could say that, but i'm definatley not your typical H/J. bareback and a rope halter for me, no silly saddles and bits. lol.
I love andalusions. Friesians are pretty, and have a cool gate, but i think they look too perfect, so i wouldnt want one. and, honestly, their gate drives me crazy. it is cool because it is diffrent from most/all other horses, but they are usually high and long strided in the trot, and really short in the canter. I like a big rocking horse canter.
-
Re: Where do You draw the line??
I do some natural horsemanship too.. but I don't think saddles and bits are silly. If you know how to use them properly you can have a great amount of communication with your horse.. but nothing wrong with just a halter.. (or not even that)
I used to do jumping.. it's fun but can be a bit nervewracking. Classical dressage is my favorite.
Also.. not all friesians have high action. The harness bred horses tend to have a very animated front leg, but the dressage bred horses tend to have a long flowing gait.
Sorry for hijacking the thread. :P
-
Re: Where do You draw the line??
Snakes:
1.1 100% het albino BP
0.7 normal BP
1.1 BCI
Soon to come is 1.0 pastel
Other pets:
2.1 mixed cats
0.1 yorkie poo
The cats and dog I keep with my girlfriend so I don't have to care for those alone. But my snakes are a different story
I do plan on adding a few more snakes within the next year but I hope I can curb my snake spending! I am going into my first breeding season next year and I am stocking on 500-700 g females to hopefully get to size by next year so I can have a few extra snakes to sell off or trade for other BP.

well. no, saddles and bits can help, i just prefer to ride without them. i am not up to brideless riding with my gelding yet, but with my old mare, we used to do almost nothing with a halter on. lead changes i usually had to use a halter, but that was about it.
i love jumping. The only time i've had it be nervewracking is when i was jumping bareback for the first time, i got a "you have to get over the fear" shpeal from my firend...so i ended up jumping a green horse over i think it was 4 ft. or 4 1/2. idk. whatever. the horse kicked up at the end. it sucked.
either way, friesians, are either 1. too prissy, and the ones that aren't are just too perfect. i would be so afraid to touch them. haha.
-
Re: Where do You draw the line??
Prissy? I think regal is a better word. They were war horses for heaven's sake. lol
Only horse I think 'prissy' when I see them are american saddlebreds.
-
Re: Where do You draw the line??
I have had the joy of riding two friesians in my life and both had canters to die for, I'd love to own one but since barrel racing is a big passion of mine and I just can't see them getting the times I must refrain.
Now, to be on topic.
I am nearing my space limit. I really want to leave myself enough room so if I see any girls(or boys) that I MUST HAVE, I can get them if funds allow.
Now that I have found a rodent supplier with reasonable prices that isn't an issue though I don't think I'll have the space to breed the amount of rats I'd need so I'm probably getting rid of them.
Other animals are cats and a betta with a new horse soon to be added to the list but that's not at this moment so...
-

Re: Where do You draw the line??
I'm not at our limit, but since I'm renting, I only have the two remaining tubs in the rack....unless I can find an inexpensive source for BUILDING racks. I can hammer nails, but can't saw straight to save my life (I make AWESOME bevels! :rolleye2: ) and I don't own the nec. tools.
IF we can get into a house in the next few months, then the sky is the limit....oh, that & how much I can scrape together for the purchase. Feeding / bedding / vet costs aren't a problem; that's budgeted for....it's the $$ for BUYING the little boogers....my next purchases are going to be the hets, and or the morphs, so I'm planning for bigger bucks.
Plans are to be breeding balls and RTBs, but I'll start w/the normals first. Hera is juuuuuust right, but I didn't have a male this year. Hopefully Wrigley will do the job next season. My het albino RTB is doing nicely, but no GF for him yet......he alone needs another 18-24 months. As for the balls, this would have been the season, but I've got 3 beautiful MALES, and no girls, so......... *sigh*
My goal is axanthics, pieds and albino balls, and then albino boas and eventually proving out our possible het for T+ albino boa. Here's what we have currently:
1.0 100% het albino RTB Petey
1.0 normal RTB Wrigley
0.1 normal RTB Hera
0.1 Pastel RTB Pinky T
1.0 Poss T+ het Apollo (He IS Hypo pastel, poss DH ghost)
3.0 Normal Balls: Zeus, Freddie, Precious
1.0 Stimson's python Felix
0.1 Albino Nelson's milksnake CeCe
0.1 Anery Kenyan SB Oreo
0.1 Amel corn (Robin's pet) Kishnah
1.0 Snow corn Flurry
0.1 Leucy Texas Ratsnake Crystal
1.3 Horses: 2 paints (Cody, Roxie), Arab (Chyp), AQHA (Duchess)
3.4 Cats: Checkers, Riley, Norman, Candy, Pesky, Mohawk and Keera
6.0 rats: Scabbers, Stewie, Robin Hood, Butterscotch, Smoo, Smee (two still waiting to be something other than batchelors)
0.7 rats: Peekaboo, Snow, Peachy, Squeeky, Monkey, Creamy, Beauty (mommies or mommies-to-be)
0.8 rats: Raven, Dumbelina, Fluff, Spot, Stripe, Patches, Thing 1, Thing 2 (still too small or waiting to be bred next)
Robin is mating Smoo and Beauty as a science project, and then we'll use the babies for either breeders (if in a house by then) or as food.
We won't be getting another dog to fill Tundra's passing, until after we get a house and land for a large enough kennel and running/yelling room.

Re: Where do You draw the line??
I think everyone can reach a point where space, time, and money become issues with their collection of animals.
For me, time is the issue. I want to be able to devote a certain amount of time to each animal, and the more animals that I have.....I have less time to devote to each animal and enjoy what I actually own. I am actually considering selling a few snakes because I feel like I don't get 'quality time' anymore (although I am very content with the variety and size of my collection).
I would also like to set up a mid sized saltwater tank (65-90 gallons) over the next year or so.......so that will definately be more time that I need to care for animals. After that, I will only be looking out for stuff on my 'must have' list that has never been available to me before. Anything thing other than that, I will have to produce myself or trade/sell animals.
Current collection is:
2.2 Ball Pythons
1.1 Brazilian Rainbow Boas
1.1 Children's Pythons
1.1 Coastal Carpet Pythons
1.0 Columbian x Hogg Island Boa
0.2 Leopard Geckos
1.0 Veiled Chameleon
1.2 Storr's Monitors
0.1 Dog
0.1 Cat
12.5 gallon saltwater tank

Re: Where do You draw the line??
oh and your other question was... where do you draw the line? well... i don't think we have one.
we have decided no more fish tanks... as there isn't any more room for more. i don't want any more cats... we only took these last three kittens as rescues and didn't really want them to begin with... but i couldn't turn my back on them.
and i think i'm done adding tarantulas at this point although i still really want an a. geroldi so if i can get one of those sometime... i'll jump at the chance!
i have a friend who has a good line... she says, now, whenever she wants to get something new she has to rehome something first. and it really helps her to keep her pet-desire in check. cause she may reaaaaaaaally want that new tarantula, frog, spider etc but then she realizes she doesn't like it enough to get rid of anything she currently has. so it's working for her at this point.

Re: Where do You draw the line??
The classic horse-breed owner/lover disparity! I can remember when most H/J TB jumpers would scoff at "western" QHs with their heads on the ground.. now I think it's nice that many riders can be found doing dressage one day, and WP the next.. great things.

I thought I'd be a little specific with my breeding plan's. I'm going to list what I plan to keep for myself.
0.1 pastel
0.1 Albino
0.1 yellowbelly
0.0 pied I'd prefer female.
0.0 ivory
0.0 super pastel
0.0 bumblebee
1.0 Spider
Hoping to trade for an orange ghost in the future maybe a mojave or lesser. This would put me in the low twenty's without keeping any of the sib's which we all know is going to be difficult to find a home's for. I'll prepare there is plenty of time.

lol.. I still don't like to see a horse dragging his nose in the dirt.
I ride H/J, dressage and western.. my family has QH's tenn. walkers, and my TB. There are horses of each breed that I like.

Re: Where do You draw the line??
I'm at the line for all pets in this tiny apartment. We've got room for the hatchlings, but I promised the Mrs no more critters until after we've moved and settled in. All kinds of grand plans. But till then... just the baby VBBs.
I have ideas for specific projects in the future, and I will draw the line at 4 rabbits as 3 leave a pretty full litter box as is. But as for snakes... not sure.
I know I want to add more VBBs, 1.1 dwarf boas either bluefields or caulkers, 1.1 mojave BPs(I'm keeping the first super mojave I make! Although Gomez gets the first go at the girl!), 1.1 Trinkets... And Karen wants a pet gopher snake. No giants for us. But those are the ones I'm dead set on for sure. Can't yet... but someday! Don't know as that's the line, but that is the plan. So far. ;)

Re: Where do You draw the line??
I draw the line when I run out of money. Alot of my animals are special needs.
I have,
2.0 dogs; a 14 year old lab mix with a heart condition and a shih tzu from the humane society I volunteer at.
1.4 cats; 13 year old orange tabby w/ possible cancer, 12 year old tabby with liver disease and hyper thyroidism, 7 year old tabby, 4 year old DSH with FIV and a urinary problem and a 3 year old tabby.
2.0 guinea pigs; less than a year old abbsisans(SP?) Milo and otis.
2.0 dwarf hamsters; I started out with four but both of the others died, they are getting pretty old for dwarf hamsters around 2 years.
1.0 cockatiel; 7 years old.
0.0.1 Ball python; less than a year old.
4.5.10 fish. Varing ages. I used to have around 20 betta, but a cut back and got some guppies and cories and what not.
If I had the money I'd have waaayyy more. I also lost my baby, a five year old ferret to cancer about a year ago.

the dragging of the nose i hate too, i also hate to see ppl pulling on their horses mouth though (most english people, to ask for a nice headset), what really annoys me is when they do that funny slow canter thing with the horse's nose on the ground. I always want to ask them how they would like doing that. lol.

Re: Where do You draw the line??
Hah yeah.. I don't like to see people jerking on the reins either. You desensitize your horse that way.. you ask the gentlest you can to get the response you want, then you get a horse that is very receptive to you.
My horse wouldn't do a nose dragging lope for anything.. he much prefers the race-horse gallop. LOL
