    How often to clean?
I'm just curious as to how often I should be cleaning my bp's encloure? And by that I mean, removing everything, cleaning the glass and replacing the substrate.

    Thanks!

    ICK!!!

Okay, so I'm guessing that if I haven't seen it, that means it probably hasn't happened yet??

But how can a snake go for 3 weeks without pooping? Is this normal?

Perfectly normal ... their bodies don't work the same way as other animals like mammals and fish ... it'll happen.

Okay cool. Thanks for the fast replies!!

Speaking of feeding, I was so proud of him today. After all the reading I did before purchasing him (as a christmas gift for my 5yo son), I was a little worried about the whole feeding aspect. Well, the first two times we fed him f/t pinkies with no problems. But the pinkies were really just way too small for him, so today we went for a feeder mouse. (I made sure it was no larger than his body at it's widest part, of course). And since dealing with f/t prey was sort of creeping me out (don't ask me why...I have no clue. Maybe the whole having to squeeze it to make sure it's thawed part?) I switched to live. I was worried a bit, because even though it was a small mouse it just looked so big in that cage with Serpi. But he did great. That mouse lasted all of about 45 seconds. And Serpi did it with me and the boys standing right there watching. Needless to say, I was proud of him for such a successful live feeding in front of a not-so-quiet audience! He's resting peacefully in his hide on the hot side of his home as we speak. :D

If snakes deficated like their owners, we'd be in serious trouble :D

If he's only been eating pinkies, it's likely there wasn't anything extra to defecate. You should definitely see something after a couple mousie meals. ;)

I have all my guys on newspaper and paper towels, which is easily to just pick up and disguard as needed. I only completely clean (bleach solution, glass cleaners, excellent rinse) about once a month, at most every month and a half.

my snakes are really clean (thank the lord) usually poop and pee in the same place. and they dont touch it, usually hang at the other end of the tank untill it is clean. I spot clean the tub and replace bedding as i take it out because they went to the bathroom. i clean their water dish and hide under every week. BUT i do scrub the tub every 4 weeks. moe often if they got poop or pee on it. They stay pretty darn clean.

    Re: How often to clean?
I do a full clean anytime someone has a dirty tub. Saves me alot of cleaning to do all in one day if I can just get it done as it happens. Sometimes they need a bath(Arith... Breth... ) if poop is involved... Dirty little MONKEYS. But others usually stay FAR far away from that end of the tub and are scrunched up against the opposite end.

Sometimes I just clean around them, especially Sonja who isn't being coopertive coming out of her tub. With her, I just take the newspaper out of one side of the tub, spray it down with chlorhexidine, wipe clean, and place new newspaper/kraft paper. She does well with this routine unless she's hungry ;)

    Re: How often to clean?
I spot clean as necessary. Whenever I see poop (smeared all over the glass or otherwise) I take care of it. I do a complete cleaning about every 6 weeks. Everything gets cleaned and disinfected, wood gets baked, and substrate gets replaced.

    Re: How often to clean?
I just clean when needed. I use newspaper, and just toss it and anything solid out; then use a weak bleach solution to clean each tub and the plastic hide-spots and plastic or glass hides. I am going to start using a dry-erase marker to state what date they were last cleaned, also.

Thank you all for your advice!!

I think I'm going to switch from aspen to simple newspaper or paper towels for now...I've got a little mite problem going on so I think that will make things easier. I am hoping my PAM gets here soon. Poor guy has been soaking all day.

    Re: How often to clean?
I clean once a week generally unless there is a huge poo then the tub gets completely dumped when its noticed.

I use paper off and on and always use aspen, the paper underneath helps keep the yuckies from drying on the plastic and can make for faster cleanups. I could just use paper but I like giving them something to roll around in.

    Re: How often to clean?
Once a week for me. Spot cleaning in between. I generally use newspaper right now due to being unable to find large enough quantities of aspen so I don't buy a dozen new bags every week.

Put a reasonably thick of vaseline around the top of the viv so the mites don't get out if you have other uneffected reptiles. It helps a lot.
