breeding help
hi,
i am going to start breeding pythons and was wondering what would be good pythons to buy to get the best results and moneys worth
-
Re: breeding help
Welcome to the site! Your in the Ball Python morphs forum, so I'm assuming your interested in Ball Pythons. I'm working to breed my first time next season, so I can't give ya too much info, although there are some good resources on this site. Check the on the breeding forum.
What are you looking for as far as getting your money worth? Morphs?

Re: breeding python
Investing in ball pythons (since this is posted in the ball python section of this forum) is all about patience, the patience to raise your females up to the proper weight (this can take two to three years), letting your males become mature enough, providing individual housing for each one, feeding for that time, and all that to have clutches that are generally on average 10 eggs or less per female (sometimes more).
There's nothing fast about returning your money on ball pythons when you are starting out. You definitely need to have a love for working with these animals.

Re: breeding python
i c but what would be the best ones to start out with in the long run and also what snakes are better to sale burmese or ball and can u help me out with what snakes to buy to breed
-
Re: breeding python
As was said in the other post there is a greater market and greater want for ball pytons than Burms. The number of morphed balls is staggering in compairson to the burms and retics. I mean theres probaly more than 5000 different proven combos in the ball trade now! Not including the stuff that people like VPI, NERD, RDK and so on haven't even let out yet. Pick an animal that you enjoy working with and that you like forget the money for right now and get what you like and go from there. Wether it Leopard geckos or Balls.
Just my two cents.

Re: breeding python
im intested in snakes i have one burmese albino python and one norm ball
-
Re: breeding python
also have you guys seen the post about the derma ball with no scales how did they produce thoes i believe there is three that they prodced a piebald and 2 more
-
Re: breeding python
Not to get off topic but
The Derma is an import from Africa and there is a huge stink about if its a morph or not. Technecly a morph is a normal snake with with geneticly caused pigmant issues that don't alter the base physiology of the animal. The Derma is a snake with a deformity that is physiologically different than other snakes. The Derma has a changed physiology.

Re: breeding python
Ball python's are top of the line in my eye's , I'd bet most of my buddy's here would agree , anyway a burm could become a real problem for an inexperienced herper.
-
Re: breeding python
why do you say it could become a real problem and which one would people pay more for
-
Re: breeding python
Do you know how big a female burm can get?
-
Re: breeding python

ever try taking a pissed off 12' Burm off her eggs by yourself.. You'd end up sleeping with the fishes
-
Re: breeding python
but do burms go for more then balls im guessing no and can you breed with a burm with a ball
-
Re: breeding python
Check the fact's on everything your considering , a female burm can reach 20ft and severely injure you , with burm's you will alway's need help caring for them.

Their's a much bigger market for ball's as Rabernet mentioned , their's no comparison between these two python's.

What you really need if you just have the money to drop is a "soul sucker" from NERD and a Lesser Bee or an Albino Clown or Plattie those are really the bomb.

Re: breeding python
If you would like to breed and sell ANY reptile, here are my suggestions:
1. Learn how to type properly. The reptile industry is full of professionals that support their families by selling animals and hobbiest that conduct themselves in a professional manner. If you want to sell reptiles, these people are your competition. No decent customers are going to purchase from a person that conducts themselves in a manner that does not seem professional which includes numerous grammar and spelling errors.
2. You have to show love of the animals first. Concern of 'how to make money' comes second. If you have love of the animals then the way you care for your animals and the way you conduct business reflects that love.....and your business will do great as a result of that love.
3. Start off breeding reptiles that anyone interested in reptiles can keep easily. Ball pythons are a perfect example of a great animal to breed. They take up minimal space and are begineer level animals. On the other hand, burms take up tons of space and are advanced animals due to their size. Burms are also being restricted in alot of areas due to their large size and invasive nature. Who wants to buy an animal that might cause them trouble?
4. Plan to do alot of waiting. Most reptiles take at least 12-18 months to reach breeding size....Some take longer. Ball python females can take 3 years to get to breeding size. If you spend $10,000 on reptiles, there is no guarantee that you will start seeing any return on the money from breeding immediately. Bad breeding seasons happen and animals are not predictable, so don't try to count your snakes before they hatch.
5. Take your time to learn about the reptile industry. There are tons of ways that people have created successful businesses in this community. Personally, I enjoy sitting back, watching and listening to the community to see how things function.....and because of that, I have gained a good understanding of how things work in this industry. Some people try to jump into reptile businesses without knowing what lies below the surface......they only end up with a broken neck and an empty wallet.

Oh really? From who? What are you going to house them in? How much research have you actually done on breeding ball pythons? Not to sound skeptical, but it takes a lot of time to get these guys up to breeding size.
-
Re: breeding python

-
Re: breeding python
How are you planning to house the balls you just purchased? How do you plan to heat each enclosure, what type of thermostats will you be using? Are you going to have 40 gallon breeders for each of your snakes, or do you plan to house them together?
