Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
I've been reading alot online about not putting the snake on ur neck? I was just wondering how many people do and dont? My snake is a little less than a year old so I doubt she could ever hurt me...but i don't know.

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
I don't do it with my Balls very much. Not because I'm afraid they would hurt me, but because they're so clumsy I'm afraid the would fall and hurt themselves. :D However, I do with my male BCI. He's a little over 6 feet now and sometimes it's easier to drape him over my shoulders if I want to walk around with him.

I carry mine around my neck all the time. I have watch Hepburn, as she is a klutz, and she prefers me to carry her and to wrap an upper arm instead, but most of them prefer the neck.

I put my female around my neck occasionally and she just hangs out. Usually she will through a coil or 2 around my head and look straight up in the air. Its so cute to watch

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
Mine likes to get in my hair. Odd, but he likes it more than the neck. He also likes laying out in my sweatshirt pocket.

Cool cool, so i guess that means i shouldn't be too worried. Unless sum freak accident happens. But i think i'll take my chances

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
I''ve held 10' burmese pythons and 8' boa constrictors around my neck.. for many hours, no problems. I used to work at a reptile zoo and I'd hold the snakes a lot for the kids to see and pet.

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
My snake is only a 3.5 foot ball python and he hangs around my neck. Only
once has he ever tightened up on me and he was easy to remove.

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
I never do; they get caught in my hair, and it stresses both me, and them, out..!

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
I don't put them around my neck. I've had them get stuck in my hair as well, and well..... ummm.... they always flick their tongue on my ear and I'm super ticklish. (just not a good combo)

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
I don't like em near my face, makes me super nervous .... so does when they tighten on your neck to get a grip
of course, I was scared of & didn't like snakes before we got these so there's still things that make me nervous about them but I like them & they are fascinating

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
I worry about my ball python falling off, but I carry my JCP over my shoulders all the time.

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
Nope, never found a reason to put them around my neck. Holding them works quite well for me.

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
My BP are small enough to hold in a hand or two but my BCI girl is pushing 7 feet and 16 lbs now so she is a bit easier to hold around my neck

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
I question the wisdom of showing snakes at a zoo that size draped around your neck I think it is a foolish and silly decesion to so off a snake that way to the general public. Many of those that go to the Zoo are either afraid of snakes know nothing about them and or the rules for handling snakes that size and if you look at that story about the snake in ohio or kentucky your just promting behavior that may get someone seriously hurt or killed and in general woking to help stupid people pass Laws that My infringe I My right to own these wonderfull creartures. As for a ball python or a snake in My collection I wont say that I never have or don't let them around My neck but I do teach all the kids and anyone new to snakes in genral that it is not the best way to hold or carry your snake and it's should never be done by a child.

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
April said nothing about letting the kids hold the snake, but she was just doing her job I'm sure and I feel that bringing out snakes for people to see and learn about is good. Big snakes have their place in the learning experience for people who dislike snakes. I know many people who think I am nuts for having a 7 foot snake that is still growing, but after showing them how gentle she is and how she will not eat me, they get over it and see snakes are not just man-eaters waiting to attack. You can only teach people so much with smaller snakes, but most people are scared because some get so long and they are afraid of getting wrapped.

Little Ryusuke is too small to put around my neck.(He's only 15 inches long) And I just got him 2 days ago so he's too freaked out for me to handle him.

It is a small reptile zoo.. has been around for years. They have the snakes out every day.. people can take pictures with them too.. never had any problems. It's a fairly common thing that small zoos and reptile attractions do. *shrug*
The people who were afraid of the snakes kept their distance anyways..

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
I think it's bloods that I was cautioned as well should never be carried that way due to their heavy body structure.
As far as the others, we try to model with our 4 kids that snakes don't belong on necks. Even though nothing we currently have in our collection is likely to be very high risk for our kids, we do have larger female BPs plus a BCI that will get quite hefty. We feel it's best to teach our children up front that safe handling is always the first rule...safe for you, safe for the snake, whether that's here at home, at a friend's home that has snakes or anywhere they are in contact with snakes. We're more concerned that being so used to snakes they could become complacent about a larger snake and an accident could occur (which is how I personally believe most folks gets hurt, they get complacent and forget a larger snake is an animal that can cause problems).
Like Mike said, it's not like we've never had a snake on our necks but we try hard to model the behaviour we feel is safest for the kids to learn. :)

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
Puppy, my ball, is a climber. So even if I carry him in my hands, he tries to make his way to my neck. It's his favorite spot in the world, especially when I'm walking. And my boyfriend's red tail, Absinthe, throws a hissy fit if he doesn't let her on his shoulders. She coils around them and rests her head on the top of his. I see no problem with it. They just like the vantage point, or it seems that way to me. We've never had problems with it.

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
Whenever I think about putting a snake around my neck, I reflect on how many times I see them after they pass a urate, sitting on urine-soaked paper in their tub. :P

Ah I don't mind - I get far more enjoyment watching people let their cats and dogs lick thier faces knowing what I'd watched it lick only moments before.
Worst one I did was working in the shop during lunch and eating my sannich at the counter, stopping to count out 8 frozen rats and mice for a customer, pick up my sannich and continue eating only to look up and see the look on their face. :P
I became immune to salmonella for a good reason - it was that or s**t myself thinner than nicole richie. For the record I am a portly chap who can now save a lot of money on the food shopping :taz: . I think it was suck-starting the syphon on the terrapin tank and getting distracted by the evil boss at the crucial second that was the kill or cure moment.
My snakes seem to quite like coiling round my neck - aside from the house snake which seems facinated with my nose and glasses.

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
i let one of my snakes go on my neck... sabrina our RTB - she's a year and a half and not all that big... but, as she gets larger... i probably won't. although... i'll take it one day at a time. ;)

Re: Do you hold your snake on your neck ever?
I do all the time - there a few who simply won't stand for it if I just hold them... they want UP!
**Just remember, if you get uncomfortable, bps can be removed (from almost anything) fairly easy if you start with their tail and gently unwrap.
