Dwarf Retics...
Seeing the last few recent threads and the pictures of the beautiful retics I remembered someone telling me about a dwarf retic... What's the "going" price and avg. size of a "normal pattern" dwarf retic?...Male. :)

Re: Dwarf Retics...
How long have you had your balls? Are balls the only species that you have kept? Have you kept any large constrictors? Retics arn't good "2nd snakes". Even dwarfs.

Well I've had balls since I was in the 3rd grade...21 now. As far as owning anything else I have had a 3ft yellow rat, 6 1/2ft florida king (mean S.o.b.), corn snake, couple black racers (everything I caught myself except for the corn)...I'm currently starting to look into other snakes though because I have a few ball pythons but now i'm interested in having just one of another kind of snake...
Either a boa morph or maybe possibly a dwarf retic, but I want to find out a little more about them. I have a friend who has a 6ft and 12ft retic and their very docile so far (although I know their known for being somewhat aggressive and very unpredictable). his have never shown any signs of aggression in his ownership but...I just don't want anything that large...Even if I get a boa i'll be getting a male.

jamps range from $200 - $600 depending on who you get them from...
kayuadis and kalaotoas are a little higher...
i know somebody right now that has a normal retic and a jamp of approximately the same age, they are feeding them on the same feeding schedule and both snakes are about the same size.
"dwarf" retics are not always the best kind of retic to start with as they can be very high strung and have an extremely savage feeding response when compared to a most normal retics.
if you looking for a starter retic you should get a normal male that has a very nice attitude.... you can easily keep a male well fed and have stay under 15ft.
i know NERD use to have a male jamp that weighed over 60lbs and was well over 12ft long.
hope that helps.

Re: Dwarf Retics...
Go with a boa because they tend to be a bit more relaxed. I feel they are good snakes for the beginner to heavy bodies.
-
Re: Dwarf Retics...
yeah it does thank you, i don't know if I'll get one then... Like I said it's more so of an idea...I'm "wanting" to get another snake but...I'll probably get another ball morph before anything. I just dig the colors and pattern of retics so much. The iridescense of their scales is really amazing, especially right after shed.

Re: Dwarf Retics...
I don't know a whole lot about dwarf retics but I asked the same question you did on another forum and was told there is no such animal as a dwarf, they told me the dwarf's still reach huge sizes. I don't know how accurate that in info is though. I too have been looking at other species, larger constrictors and have decided to go with a Dumerils boa or a colombian male. Due to the fact that they still get large but not HUGE and are easier to care for when you first get into larger species of constrictors.

Yeah, If I get anything differen't other than another ball morph it will be a boa morph. I like the size range they grow in... They are heavy bodied but aren't 15-20ft long as adults...

Yeah, I like the dumerils as well...

Re: Dwarf Retics...
Yes those Dumerils are Beautiful.
I did find this on Dwarf Retics but the updates stop at Feb. 2006. So i don't know how accurate it would be. But its pretty interesting comparing growth and weight to feeding amounts.

Yeah see that's just crazy, I can't believe how fast retics grow!

this is 100% the truth!!!!!
there are SMALLER races of retic... but dwarf, maybe in the wild were they comefrom but not in captivity.
on a side note though... boas are just as dangerous as retics. dont underestimate the power of any large constrictor (yes a boa is considered a large constrictor).
i recently heard of a man in florida that was killed by his 13ft boa constrictor... if you tink about it, boas get more news time than any other snake... thats because they are very easy to get, and people think they arent as dangerous as a larger boid.
this is america and if you want a retic, and you KNOW what your getting into, then by all means get it!!!!
not sure if you guys realize this, but boas and "dwarf' type retics can reach the same large size.

Re: Dwarf Retics...
Yeah, I actually heard about that story. I tried to find the article on it but I could only find a video and my computer at work doesn't have sound so I don't even know what the heck happened.:(
yeah, theres been a few story's of where boa's and other species 13ft and larger have killed people...I understand completely the risks involved with owning a large species. I think I'm leaning more towards a boa morph and I'd be getting a male if I do actually get one (for the smaller size).
what's the largest male boa you've seen? (to anyone)

hey kristy i notice your in n idaho... i am in spokane... yay!
anyway... that link is not a reliable source of information and is biased in point of view... not completely accurate. they even say on that link they arent sure about dwarfs... but make all these claims that they are... contradicitng information if you ask me... and you shouldnt push something as genetic when its not yet proven.
one thing you should know is that you shouldnt identify any snake on the size and shape of scales... its the number and arrangment that are good diagnostic characters.
animals of the same species are so variable that color, size, and pattern are not good ways to identify ANY animal.

i have seen boas weighing over 100lbs.
good luck with your choice... that is one of the fun things about getting new herps...

Yeah not too many of the reptile lovers out here lol. I am in Coeurdalene so we are pretty close.
Thats why I was looking more at the Dumerils due to their smaller size, or possibly a blood python. They are awesome animals. I like burms but they are too big and I don't feel I have enough experience yet to take on a snake that will get that large. I have been told by several people to start with a Dumerils or a Colombian.

i like dumerils boas... especially the ones with lots of pink on them.

Re: Dwarf Retics...
although tics aren't heavy bodied, they have as much if not more muscle than a snake of equal length IMO. The biggest tic I've held was about 10'+/- and it would have been a pain to handle alone. They are pretty quick and fairly unperdictable. I would actually recomend a B.c.occidentalis(sp?) or a B.c.constrictor as the next step before a "giant" species. Both are capable of reaching 8'+ if fed decently but can certainly get bigger if fed like you would a tic for example.
Hope this helps a bit

I dunno...I'll get another ball morph before I decide on another species. But if I do I think it will be a male boa morph for sure...

I don't really want a giant...although I know boa's can get pretty big...I just want the next step up from my Ball pythons while still having a decent temperment... I'm not trying to raise a monster...Just a healthy animal a little bigger than my balls but nothing bigger than 10ft...

Most of the B.c.Imperator that get over 9' are over weight from what I have seen. B.c.i. fed a meal a little smaller than their girth every week once they are a few years old seems to be a pretty good feeding schedule to keep their weight on without them getting obese.

Re: Dwarf Retics...
There are plenty of 9' 60 or 70# boas, but like it was already said, they are usually overweight.

if you are still looking at dwarfs i cant stress enough that you go with a reputible breeder. i have 3 15-17 ft "dwarfs" that people bought but got scammed into a normal retic so they give them to me. hey dr satan, are you coming to florida anytime soon? im overly swamped with green annies burms, and retics over 10 ft that retard people buy and end up giving them to me. free of charge no adoption fee, just a good home :)

Yeah, I don't think I'm going to be getting a retic... I've thought about it more and more and I would just so much rather invest the money into another ball python morph.

i think that is a very responsible and mature thing to do :) also i see your in florida if you ever come up to jacksonville i have a nice norm 9ft retic that you can handle and it may give you the feeling of a dwarf retic and prepare you in the future if you want one:)

I feel it's honostly "the'' Mature/Responsible thing as well... At this time It would just be stupid to buy a retic or anything larger than a ball python at the moment right now... Atleast not until I get a house.

Re: Dwarf Retics...
definetly. that save one more giant snake from going into the shelters as welll:)
-
Re: Dwarf Retics...
I think that is a great idea for now. Do take up uro1001 offer though and go handle the retics if is somthing you think you might want to own in the future personally I think anyone intresting in owning one of the giants should have to have some experience with them before they purschase them, and its great that those that own them now are willing to share their expericne with others we really must do all we can to stop this massive dumping of large snakes into the wild were they don't really belong and the best way to do that is through educuation and personal expeiance in hanldling them. Best of luck with your future choices in snakes, I would definatly consider a bcc or bci as an intermediate step don't think our home would be the same without ours.

Re: Dwarf Retics...
Well I've had experience with adult red tails and a buddy of mine that I hangout with alot has a couple retics...6ft & 12ft...his are rather docile and haven't striking or anything...I really admire the retics, although after thinking about it more I dont' think I'll be purchasing one anytime soon. I think I'd rather have a Boa though if I was going to get anything other than a ball for my next snake. And I'm definetly not for dumping snakes into the wild or into shelters...Every animal I purchase or own is going to be taken care of for the duration of it's life by myself...It just doesn't make us responsible herpers look very good when the irresponsible people release their pythons and boa's in the wild or dump them into shelters because they can't handle their adult size...
So many people purchase these animals as well thinking they can also just give them to a zoo when they reach adult size...that's just ignorance.
