We can register her!

My friend that sold us Cuesta, notified Mark today that she has found some paperwork that she lost, and we can register Cuesta as a Paint with the American Paint Horse Association (APHA.) This is awesome; it does increase her monetary value (not important as we never want to sell her) but it also is just awesome in general; it is literally her birthright to be APHA.
Now I will have all the fun of explaining why our colored mare (Emma) is not a Paint, but our solid chestnut is.. lol.

You send in papers, pictures, and a registration fee. If I remember correctly. My mom owns a horse ranch, and several of the horses are registered with the AQHA.

I am still learning about this myself. I had given up hope that my friend would find the mare's papers, but she did. I have some fun info on her now though! She has some awesome bloodlines; lots of Leo and Doc Bar in her lines. Her dam was named Bad Reputation, and her sire is Doc's Malbec (he is on this site:

Wow! I just found out that she is a granddaughter of Doc Bar, a Qh stud that I really admire! This is astounding.. I am looking up her lineage online right now.

you can usually use allbreedpedigree.com and http://www.maple-webranch.com/maple/mapleframe if you don't have an AQHA membership. I'd help but mine ran out and I'm not inclined to renew until I get around to horses again.

Oh Amy don't you know they're now SPBs? Solid Paint Breds instead of Breeding Stocks. I think they just like changing things around.

No I didn't mean about the registeration bit LOL. I meant how do the genetics works that solid horses are paints? Bit confusing.

Well, the paint genes aren't always dominant. Consider it this way. Solid paints are in essense possible hets. :) However it only takes one copy of the paint gene (tobiano, overo, sabino etc etc) to make a visible 'morph'. Clear as mud right?

Pretty much it comes down to you get a solid horse from a paint or two paint parents they consider that it carries paint bloodlines and thus is still allowed registration only with restrictions, you can't show in regular registry (colored horse) classes in shows and there usually are less classes offered for breedingstock/solid paint breds.

That's a very sloppy explanation though it should help.

I am actually glad she's solid, for one silly reason; it costs less to register a solid. :)
It is awesome knowing she is a Doc bar granddaughter. I have always admired Doc Bar, and she has some lines on her dam's side that I am in awe of too; notably, Skipper W. I see it in her head, ears, and neck.
Granted, she is not in great shape right now, with her winter fat and mammoth winter coat, lol..
If we did breed her in the future (not sure if I want to or not) I would want to pick a homozygous colored stallion to guarantee color.. but I am definately not planning on breeding her this coming year; I want to build a roundpen and work on getting some miles on her under saddle.

Well, looking at her I doubt she has any hidden overo genes so homozygous tobi would probably be your best bet.
I love breeding stocks. When I was still 'out in the boonies' and had horses I picked up two very nicely bred BS geldings. One was a son of Just Obviously Cool and the other was a son of Frozen Assets. I got them both for less then the price of one of the sires stud fees. Worked with them both. Got some open show experience on them and sold them both at their first breed show before I even managed to take them in their classes. Both are now in show/trail homes and I get christmas cards from their owners. :)

Skipper W is a bloodline that you either love or you hate. Back in Indiana there were a LOT of people that wouldn't touch a horse with Skipper W in their blood. They said they were all crazy. Personally I never had a problem with Skipper W's but then you'll have people who are picky about their bloodlines and who say the same thing about Doc Bar's, Two Eyed Jack's, Poco Buenos, etc etc.

Oh, I know about the ways people judge bloodlines! I can even remember years ago when most English riders I knew of, would not touch anything QH.. now you see them in everything from jumping to dressage..
Questa actually has an awesome attitude. She was mostly trained by a young kid, who obviously had to have took a lot of time bombproofing her; nothing like blankets, buckets, throwing hay, phases her. Now.. Emma is a complete butball in that regard; no matter how many times she sees somthing like a water hose or a flying handful of hay, it is a dragon that is out to kill her.. I actually think she has Freckles bloodlines, due to her appearance..
I don't see how people can judge a bloodline and think that all horses from it ar nuts! It has alot to do with training at an early age, plus the dam's temperament plays a HUGE role it, in my opinion. Our two foals this year went like this: laid-back Cuesta's fillu was inquisitive almost to the point of being bold.. while Domingo, Emma's colt, would directly mimic his dam's behaviors of paranoid-ness and nervousness! :) And we handled them both the same since birth.

Well of course the english riders don't mind the QH. The english types are 98% TB now... but that's a rant for another day :D

It's very true that horses are individuals. But the bloodline myths still persist. I have a friend that will own NOTHING but Impressive bred horses. Another friend who thinks that Harlan bred horses are gods gift to ranch work... I myself prefer the old foundation types. :D

The foals most definately take after their dam's quite a bit. However an aquantance of mine had a VERY sweet and quiet mare. She wanted a foal out of a particular stallion, this stud was mean. I personally would have gelded him but he was bred to the purple and could do anything. So, she bred her mare two him. THREE years she bred that mare to him.
Previously this mare had two foals, both quiet mini versions of her. The foals by this stallion were nasty flighty little demons. I had the misfortune of meeting the last filly. At less then two months old she would bite, kick, rear at you, try to pin you against a wall...you name it she did it.
And she was worked with the same as the other foals, didn't matter. All three were nasty. She did manage to have them survive to weanling age without killing anyone and she did manage to sell all three to show homes I'm suprised to say. I only heard news on the first foal, a colt (now a gelding thank heavens) who is used in ranch work and team penning now, he's not a personable horse but has stopped most of his nasty behavior (he's six now).
So, IMO the sire can have some say. I prefer to breed to a goodminded stallion no matter what though I love browsing stallion ads. :)

It's amazing how much a stud fee can cost. Bloodlines are pretty cool as well. I was browsing through one of the magazines one time and found a stallion that could be traced back to Man O'War. He was a beautiful horse, and his fee was pretty high :)

Yeah, I'd love love love to have a mare worthy of a breeding to Reminic http://www.babcockranch.com/Html/reminic.html but 1. No mare and 2. The 15,000 stud fee is a 'tad' beyond my current budget.
I did have a Mr. Gun Smoke bred mare that would have crossed AWESOMELY on him...

Man O War can be found in a few QH and Paint lines, but he's so far back that he doesn't really effect them today. I prefer to see my 'BIG NAMES' in the first three generations, more preferably in the first two.

lol. I'm not into breeding much, one day i want to, but i currently have a gelding, and that is not going to happen. lol. He was a stallion for 5 years though, and has a little baby of his own (man is he cute!).
I used to go to an all QH barn. We had a doc baby, poco, etc. etc. some pretty horses.

My friend had a gelding that was a stud for a few years.. he was actually a monster in the attitude department, and personally I didn't think that gelding him changed him at all.. but that was just his case. She has two AQHA studs, one being a cremello who is so weirdly colored, he is almost unreal looking! She has some sorrel broodmares and am pretty sure she's breeding for palominos this year, as she just got the cremello.

Cremellos and Perlinos are nifty. I personally love Champagnes, www.ichregistry.com has some nice examples.
