GTP help

Okay, so i was considering getting a GTP for my father for his birthday. At first he was not took eene on snakes, and now he is absolutley fascinated by them, and actually wants a GTP. Does anybody have a good care sheet?

I would have to say from talking to differen't people that the tree pythons and boa's are rather aggressive. And being arborial (rear fanged) they can give a really nasty bite. You say he isn't too keene on snakes...I take it he hasn't owned one before?

I would NOT start out with a GTP for a first time snake owner.

Get The More Complete Chondro (or The Complete Chrondo, it's just the older version of the book) from Greg Maxwell if you can if you really want to learn about them.

Agreed! GTP (Green Tree Pythons) and ETB's (Emerald Tree Boas) are by no means a starter snake I wouldn't even consider them a good second or third snake. They tend to be more display animals and for the experinced herper.

If you looking for a snake of about the same size with good color you might look in to Jungle Carpet pythons or any of the Carpets they make good first snakes and have simular husbandry requirements as BP's.

Arboreal means "tree-dwelling," not rear fanged.

If your set on an arboreal snake, Amazon tree boas can be just as beautiful but much less expensive. ATB's still require more work than other species for proper maintenance but that's half the fun.

Not only that, but GTP's are not rear-fanged... Stick your hand in their cage at night and find out... :)

excuse me for the mixup in my words... I was telling myself there's something wrong with that post as I was posting it and thank you for correcting me. But I do have a breeder friend that had a couple GTP's and they were very aggressive. I was actually asking them out of curiousity for myself because I was thinking about getting one.

I honostly don't... Someone was telling me that they were rear fanged...And for some reason I pathetically mixed up arboreal with being rear fanged...oops!

Aggressive? So I've heard, and apparently their bite doesn't feel very pleasant. Forgive me for the way I put this as some information is a little off
(arborial and rear fangness)

I didn't give you the negative rep, but keep your chin up, it happens from time to time...normally the positive rep points will outweigh the negatives.

But besides your tad of misinformation in your first post you didn't really deserve the - points...just PM a mod to see if they can take care of that for you.

From what I have heard about GTP temperment, some individuals are naughty, and some are nice, but you don't want to handle any of them after dark. You also don't want to handle them very much until they are at least a year old, and from then on you will discover the disposition of your snake.

Also, don't buy from anyone who probes or pops their young snakes.
