Re: When to Start Breeding
I'd hold off until you get your second snake. You didn't mention how soon you thought you'd be getting a third or fourth snake. Usually it's not worth breeding rodents until you have at least 3 snakes, but I suppose you could get started if you get a second one with plans on getting more.
Also, will you be feeding live or F/T? If feeding F/T, you can always freeze the surplus for when you get more snakes.
Re: When to Start Breeding
I plan on getting my second snake as soon as I can get the rack, which will be in a few months. I do have plans to get more snakes, so the rack will be perfect as it holds 4 snakes. (Question, can full-grown corns be kept in a 32qt rack?)
I will be feeding f/t so yes, I can always freeze the surplus offspring. A few more questions.
What size mice do full grown corns eat? And if more than one at one feeding, how many?
How many males and females should I get to start off this breeding colony once I start breeding for my snakes?
This is the 32qt rack I'll be getting for my snakes. Ok for corns?

No one is going to answer my questions?

I can't help but I can bump it to the top for you:D

Re: When to Start Breeding
Most corn breeders keep them in 27 qt. tubs with success so my answer would be yes to the size question. What size mice is your corn eating now?
Re: When to Start Breeding
i am still holding off on breeding, i have 4 snakes, and 2 female rats, but i won't breed them untill i really need to. and i just ordered about 120$ worth of rats online, so, i have a feeling i won't be needing to for a looong time. lol.
Re: When to Start Breeding
I also just placed a frozen rat order 2 weeks ago for about $100 in frozen rats but I am breeding rats just to have some extra pinks and pups. I will give some to a friend of mine who has 3 small snakes and I will be trading some off once I start getting more but for now, in the freezer they go (after the CO2 chamber).
Re: When to Start Breeding
My corn is on fuzzies, possibly graduating up to hoppers soon. The fuzzies leave a slight lump in him, so I'm going to wait till I can't see the lump anymore before moving him up. I plan on getting a second snake sometime in April or May.

I'd wait for sure. Your going to spend more money setting up a mouse colony than you will feeding a single snake till then(depending on howmuch you get fuzzies for). Is he on live or f/t?
Re: When to Start Breeding
The store fed him live. I tried a f/t and it took me two trys to get him to eat it. While he ate it, he didn't seem to go for it much. I'll try another f/t soon.
