Pastel grading system?
Ok so I see that some people have they're pastels graded.
what are they graded on?
Is this grading system universal throughout? or just that persons opinion?
are other morphs graded?

Re: Pastel grading system?

Yeah man, NARBC has strict grading guidelines, if you break them...your ace better call somebody :P LMAO
Naw, its simple, a better looking snake is worth more money..... If you dont know what a nicer or "A" grade pastel looks like, mabye you had better look at some more. Like I told you in another thread, if you're shopping for a pastel, dont just look for any pastel, look for THE pastel.....the one that screams your name, and has every trait you were looking for in a pastel. If you dont know what traits you are looking for....again, you should look at some more and decide what you like. Dont depend on a breeder to tell you what is "A" grade or "the nicest pastels out there", if you've done your homework, you will know it when you see it, and it wont matter what it costs ;)

Thats what I'm getting at. I've looked at lots of pictures. I know what I like. I was just wondering what people were using as references for them to say one pastel is nicer than another.
I found a breeder and I wanted a particular snake that I liked but replied to me that it was already spoken for but had another one that was nicer (more blushing). Turns out I do like the looks of this snake and worked out better for me.
I was just curious as to what people think is good traits for a pastel. So was just looking for the info.
Thanks Jason exactly what I was wanting.

Re: Pastel grading system?
The snakes that have a higher amount of blushing and are more solid yellow color and a real faded head tend to be higher in value. Then the go down from there. If the yellow is more broken up and the blushing isn't the pronounced. then it might be a little lower in value.
Hope this helped - Ed

Re: Pastel grading system?
Another thing you need to think about is , what will this pastel look like when its older? do you know how to recognize a young pastel that will be major brown as an adult? ....a little pointer to add to the post I made above is, patchy yellow or orange = brown later on ;) For example... that pastel in my avatar, he's pretty nice isnt he? awesome blushing, wacky banding throughout....nice color, but.....notice the orangey tones? In that pic, the pastel is 6 months old. If you saw what he looks like today @ 2 1/2 yrs old, you'd crap your pants! he's brown as a mofo :( Which is why he is no longer in my collection, I only work with the best ;) I can show you pics of him @ 2yrs old if you'd like

Re: Pastel grading system?
Very bright colors, little to no orange wash on the sides, and a fair amount of blushing are what I look for.
The orange wash tends to turn brown as they age so you want to avoid that in a baby, the brighter colors as a baby, the better it will look as an adult since they tend to darken, nice blushing on the sides and back will compliment how it looks as an adult.
No matter what some people may claim, I beleive that if you want to breed pastels (or cross them into other morphs), you want the best one you can find. Don't settle for an ugly, dull one. A few people will tell you it doesn't matter what the pastel looks like as long as it's a pastel. Well, that's why there are so many garbage pastels out in the market. People went for quantity instead of quality. Some pastels for sale don't even look like a pastel should.
The one in my avatar had no orange on the sides as a baby. At 500 grams it still has bright yellow coloring. Trust me. Stay away from the ones with all the orange on them. There are a few on KS right now that have a TON of orange on them and they are priced dirt cheap. When they age, you understand why they were so cheap.

Re: Pastel grading system?
Ok see thats one thing I don't know to look for is how he'll look when he's older here's a picture of one of the pastels I've seen tell me what you think

Re: Pastel grading system?
Very nice looking I'd get it. Loads of blushing, very high yellow, Nice faded head. I say if its a male around 300.00 if is a female 400.00 to 500.00 in value. Thats just me blowing smoke. LOL
Hope this helps -Ed

I picked out mine for the blushing but also for the reduced pattern
Here is my boy Clyde (Of course I also have Bonnie) :D

Sorry for the pick not the best quality

Re: Pastel grading system?
This is one that is holding it's color pretty well at 7 months.
There was almost no orange on the sides as a hatchling so it should dull a bit more as it ages but I don't expect it to "brown out".

Re: Pastel grading system?
these are the two i just picked up from adam...
first "little dude" my VPI pastel boy... i chose him because of his patterning... i like his lack of 'spotting' in his yellow sections...
http://www.8ballpythons.com/uploads/aleesha-1.jpg
and this is my lemon girl... i simply fell in love with her the second i saw her
http://www.8ballpythons.com/pastel/lempasjun06-06.jpg
and here's what adam told me when i wasn't sure which pastel male i should pick... cause i don't know a whole lot about them.
"you should pick the animal that speaks to you ... You should buy the best animals that you can possibly find/afford ... You'll have them for the next 20+ years and cleaning up poop for an animal that isn't "perfect" in your eyes is no fun ... trust me. :P "
so i went with little dude... not because he's the best show piece specimen i could have picked... but because i was in love with his reduced pattern and ... cleaning up his poop for the next 20 years... is something i feel great about doing!

Re: Pastel grading system?
Congrats Aleesha!!! They are SO NICE!!!
I'm lovin' this thread... Any photos of "Orange sides" anyone????

Re: Pastel grading system?
That lemon girl is NICE.
I can see why you liked her.

Re: Pastel grading system?
Rock on Aleesha! Great choices from a very wise man. :)

Re: Pastel grading system?
Here's my boy, currently around 300g. He's a Graziani :) Such a cute widdle 'ting. He's a good bit brighter now that he's gotten older. The orange seems to be fading and turning yellowish peach. So I take that as a good sign.

Re: Pastel grading system?
wow those are all some nice pastels guys. Adam has some beautiful snakes aswell as graziani. Would love to do business with either of them. Graziani has got some great pastels on his site that are het for pied or albino which would be nice as well cause if it wasn't a pastel I'd know it was a het. Sadly I'm in Canada and Graziani said cites alone would be around $350 so until I'm ready to make a larger one time purchase I'll hold off.

Re: Pastel grading system?

Ok so if you don't mind how much did shipping + cites + everything else cost you in the end? I don't need to know the cost of the BPs just the cost incurred for shipping everything if thats not too much to ask.
Thanks
Chad

Re: Pastel grading system?

Nice one ;)
Kplunk, if you're interested in Adam's fees and practices, you should give him a call or e-mail him, he wont bite ;) Im sure he'd be happy to discuss how these things work with you :)
-
Re: Pastel grading system?
Oh I wasn't trying to get backdoor info on Adam I'm just curious to the cost of cites / shipping in general from the US to Canada.
Although I don't know Adam I figure he wouldn't bite I just don't have the money to be shipping from the US right now so I didn't want to ask him about cites cost when I probably wouldn't be purchasing from him anyways. Was just curious about the shipping cost in general info.

Re: Pastel grading system?
no problem at all... it's nice to know what you are dealing with potentially before you have to deal with it... cause once you deal with it, then it's dealt with and if you don't know what to deal with then you might be done before you get started ;)

If you are patient you should wait and check with Mark Mandic I know he is working with Graziani line and he is a Canadian Breeder http://www.ballpython.ca/index.html

Bravo girl! I was beginning to think everyone in the U.S. thought his name was Markus Jayne LOL....Mark and Janie are good people, and if you're looking for Graziani line, he's the one to see (him and Greg are practically married :P)...You will pay more for one of theirs, but honestly they produce more quality Graziani line Pastels than anyone up here...sure other people might pop out one or two that look better than Mark's here and there, but on the whole, Mark and Janie consistently produce high quality Pastels that are worth paying top dollar for...

Re: Pastel grading system?
I would wonder if anyone has conclusive evidence that brighter Pastels produce more bright offspring, while browned-out ones produce offspring that brown-out.. I am thinking yes, since some of the Pastels I've seen for sale (especially the Enchis!) are many more dollars higher in price than the going rate...

Enchis aren't really "pastels" ... the name is confusing ... like cinnamon pastels ... enchis are their own thing. ;)

I bought George and 7 other NERD line Lemons, George was the one with the best looks. your female was produced by Georges father. good blood for sure. :)
Something that I just noticed looking at your avatar, the eye stripe on your girl is exactly like Georges. drops down in the back. COOL
-
Re: Pastel grading system?
I didn't read all the posts but I have heard that different blood lines and even different types of pastels tend to darken more so than others. I.E NERD Line lemons tend to hold there color. Where as jungles will tend to darken. As far as VPI and others I have no clue but thats also something to take into account. I went with the jungles cause the super are super hot.
Just my two cents
