Name That Python! What type of BP?
Hey all, I have what most of you here will probably consider a stupid question :P

I'm a new BP owner, and honestly I do not yet know most of the differences between the types of them. I know what a few look like, like the spiders, but I don't know what my Monty is! Can ya'll help me out? I'd sure appreciate it! Also, know of any good websites that describe the different sub-species?

    Here he is:

    :rolleye2:

LOL wow that floor sure looks filthy doesn't it! I need to vacuum, as i've been creating stuff the past few days, lol. The rest is just odd lighting...strange!

Also each morph is not its own sub-species, just a color and pattern variation.

    Hehe...yup... a very handsome "normal."

So far as I know, there are no "sub species" of Python Regius...just morphs...which are rare and costly enough that people don't get one without knowing it. ;)

exactly! many people 'think' their normal is just too gorgeous to just be a normal... but normals are gorgeous and beautiful and spectacular!!!

That's a good size Ball... Have you had him sexed? Do you have a digital scale?
At that size if it were a female I'd imagine it would lay some good clutches for you...

Either way not a bad looking snake at all!

The so-called "types" you are referring to are actually all the same species, all ball pythons. For example, spiders are still ball pythons (python regius), they just carry a gene that changes their patterning and coloration. Animals with genetic mutations that cause these differences are referred to as "morphs."

Hope that helps with the confusion.

Re: Name That Python! What type of BP?
I haven't had him sexed yet. I'm a little new to snake ownership, so by sexed, you mean finding out it's gender, correct? As far as I know, it's a male, but for a all i know his previous owners were completely unaware and just told me he's a male! So maybe on his first vet visit, I may find out he's really a she!!

Actually, he's not as big as he looks in those pics, although he's not exactly small either. I don't have a good scale yet, but i do know hes around 29 inches long. I still gotta get the hang of the snake measurer program.

Thanks for clearing that up elevatethis! Actually what you said was exactly what i was trying to say...I just couldnt think of the right words to use, lol.

And yes.... Winner Winner Chicken Dinner INDEED! lol!

do not let petco fool you. the only bps they carry is normal bps and the snake you are most likely talking about is a corn or kingsnake. :)
