Fighting Like Cats and Dogs - Says Who?
Not these two! Diamond is a seven year old golden retriever/shepard mix and Chynna is my 15 year old long haired calico. They are the best of buds and even play with each other....well, ok....Diamond plays with Chynna, and Chynna flops on her side and puts up with Diamond's nose poking and will occassionally swat at her nose! LOL

This is how I found them this morning when I got up for work!

I have 3 dogs and 5 cats. They do cuddle up and sleep together, but my oldest cat does not "play" with anything (not dignified) but the others tease the dogs and jump on them. My female dog tries to mother the kittens, she cleans their faces and their bottoms. I've always had cats and dogs together and never had any problems.

Actually the cat keeps going over to the poor sleeping dog to sleep. Sometimes when the dog wakes up she'll roll onto the cat, or step on her getting up, and then she gets beat up by the cat for daring to bump her.

Hope you don't mind Robin but I'd like to share a cat/dog story.

Shadow, our black lab female and Pusster Kitty our torti/grey stripe female came to us both as young animals. Shad loved this little just weaned kitten and tried valiantly to nurse her even though she'd never bred herself or had milk for her new baby. As they grew they remained best buddies. Playtime was a great game of fetch for Shad while the little hellion kitten hid in wait to attack. Woe be to Shadow if she dodged and Puss Puss couldn't jump on her. Then it was kittie retribution time as one little determined house tiger chased her much bigger buddy around wildly.

The neighbourhood dogs all knew that nobody got to chase our cat. Shadow would become the enraged mom then....nobody got to bother "her" cat. Even if I tried to shoo Puss from somewhere, there would be the big black dog...never growling at me but definitely getting between me and the cat. Not even the beloved human could discipline her baby. In many ways Puss grew up thinking she was a dog. She'd ride with her big buddy Shad in the car, standing up just like the dog to peer out the window and enjoying all the wonderful smells and sights racing by. She loved to follow us all on walks just like the dog. If Shad could do it, Puss figured it was just fine too!

Puss would often sprawl in front of Shad for daily grooming. Many a time I watch Shad carefully running her big teeth over Puss's coat, ever so gently grooming as the cat rolled to allow her buddy to get to another spot. No drooling allowed though!

Puss snuck out one day just days before the vet appointment to spay her and we ended up with 3 kittens. As fate would have it Puss delivered when we were at work with Shadow in attendance. She trusted that dog so much she would let Shadow lay there licking the kittens butts as mommy Puss nursed them. Shad became the kitten sitter when Puss needed a break (though the kittens never looked as nicely groomed with gobs of happy dog slobber on them LOL).

Years passed as they do and one day, in a patch of lovely sunlight on our deck, dear old 11 year old Shad quietly and without a sound died in her sleep. By her side was her beloved friend Puss Puss. We found them there, Puss standing watch over Shad's body. Poor cat grieved and searched for her Lab buddy for a long time afterwards.

More years passed and Puss's time came at age 18. We said goodbye to her in a vet's office (I wish she'd had her patch of sunlight too). I hope and pray that if there is a place that beloved pets go, that there was an old black dog waiting there for an old beloved feline friend and that someday they will both be waiting there for me too.

Shadow and Puss Puss, we miss you always, we remember you always. You were both dear friends to each other and to the human family graced by your time with us.

Awww, what a lovely story, Jo! I'm sure that Shad and Puss are playing together at the Rainbow Bridge waiting for the day that they see you!

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

    Author unknown...

(We won't tell anyone here at work why I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes as I remember old friends as well!)

Yep had a few tears myself typing that out. They were truly wonderful pets. We got them both well before we had the kids so they were our fur babies as well. I've been very blessed to have a number of wonderful pets over the years. The dog I had as a child lived until age 18. Jenny was a wonderful beagle/smooth fox terrier cross and a better friend I'll never have. Though telling her all my teenage secrets....well put it this way...I'm really glad that dog couldn't talk and rat me out to the parental units. LOL

P.S. Both Shad and Puss were unwanted pets. Shad was a horribly abused dog found wandering and slated to be humanely euthanized the next day if we didn't adopt her. She was hysterically mute for almost a year, and a real mess emotionally. Puss was a kitten adopted by another family but their child was allergic. These two unwanted creatures bonded with each other and with us and had in the end I think a glorious life.
