What kind of water do you use?
We were wondering. We use RO water for all of the tarantulas and the snakes, but we buy it at the store and haul it home and are forever running out of it. I wanted to know what kind of water does everyone on the boards use for their herps. Untreated tap water? Treated tap water (if so with what)? Bottled water? We were thinking about maybe getting one of those filters that you can attach to your faucet. Opinions, ideas, anyone?

Plain old water from the well for me. If it's good enough for me to drink I figure it's good enough for the snakes.

I have a small filter that fits on the end of the faucet. I filter the water into a plastic bottle, then let it sit for a few hours to get to room temp before I give it to my snake.

Same here.....it hasn't killed me yet so it can't be that bad ;)

Water out of the faucet is just fine. No need to treat the water anymore than it has been treated at your local water treatment faculity.

I have a friend that bought a normal from me and buys it cases of bottled water...changing the water out every day or two...lol I wouldn't necessarily take it to that extreme but it feels good knowing that he's taking good care of the animal for me.

Tap water is all i've used and never had any problems. As long as the water doesn't get dirty in the tank and it's changed out regularly its fine.

I buy RO water too- cheap, $2 for 11L, drink it myself. Wouldn't the chlorine in tap water hurt the snakes?

I don't know much about the subject of water for herps. But in my Environmental analysis class I learned that in Canada at least unsure on the states but there is no regulations on bottled water. That said do I think bottled water is bad for you? no I drink it all the time. But there is still no regulations on it to make it better. The only reason a bottled water company would care would be to obviously not make you sick so you continue to buy there product. Now you look at tap water and tap water has loads of regulations on it. But they don't necesarrily always fall into these regulations and can still be harmful to you. The city I'm from Winnipeg Mb, Canada. its tap water isn't the greatest almost everything that is regulated as far as tap water goes the limits on it are above the standards set. The city is working on a new water treatment facility to improve this but it won't be done for a couple of years.
Those brita filters generally only aid on taste and clarity they don't filter out harmful contaminants if they exist.

So all that said what is a person supposed to do?

I have no clue just thought I'd throw my :2cent: in

I use straight tap water. It takes a long time to go through any extra filtration for the amount of water I go through in a water changing. However, the apartment building I live in has a water softener.

When you get to the size a bowl I use for my female redtail, you would be spending 5$ a week on water!!! lmao

I don't know if bottled water is regulated in the States or not, but I did look up a site that has what different water filters get our of water and two things the brita does get out are chlorine and lead. We just weren't sure.

Ya probably good for that but I was talking more about bacteria and other things that aren't supposed to be in tap water like E Coli but can exist if neglect or other issues arise with the water treatment plant.

If you let your water sit doesn't that get rid of the chlorine. I remember a long time ago somebody saying for aquariums either use a chlorine remover or let it sit for a day or so and the chlorine goes away.

Re: What kind of water do you use?
yes u can leave the water sit for 24 hours and the chlorine will evaporate into the air if u keep the container it is in open for air to hit it some how. if u have a pool u put the chlorine in at nite and by the day and your ready to go swimmin it doesnt smell like chlorine its the same concept.

i hope that helps o and i use plan old tap water put it in 1 gallon jugs and let them sit open for 24 hours and after that i cap them and use as i need i have about 10 to 15 jugs filled for use for all my animals

Yes, the chlorine will off-gas in less than 24 hours if kept at room temp. It is however not a high enough concentration to cause any problems with snakes, so no need to worry about it.

I use distilled, pure water you buy in the jugs at the store. Its like 4 for a dollar, but then again my nathair is just a baby. So i get like a week and a half on 4 jugs.
