Home ownership is too expensive!

Has anyone ever seen the movie The Money Pit where the house the couple buys turns into a nightmare with all of the money they need to dump into it?
That's my house.

So far a complete new bathroom (new floors too since it was destoyed by the crappy tub leaking-stupid fibergalss whirpool tub POC-never buy a house with one or think of putting one in. They are not worth it when hairline cracks appear or the jets leak without you knowing it until it's too late.), new doors and windows, new light fixtures (and a ceiling fan in the living room), new stairs, new porch, new retaining wall, new roof and repair to the chimney, new furniture, and new carpeting.

All to make the house look like it's not one of those slated to be condemned.

The low purchase price will get you everytime.:(

The idiots I bought this house from screwed me as well.

They took EVERY lightbulb with them when they left. I had to go buy lightbulbs in order to friggin see when we moved in.

The contract stated to leave the dining room table since it was cutom built and attached to one wall and the floor. The contract didn't state to leave the chairs so guess what? Yep, they TOOK THE CHAIRS!

The contract stated to leave the front of the fireplace intact. You guessed it. They took THE GRATE inside since that was not listed to stay.

They were supposed to leave the the dishwasher. Well the contract was worded where it stated "dishwasher will remain". It didn't say THAT dishwasher so they took it out and left a POS one. I had to buy a working one after we moved in.

I really afraid if I ever see these people again, I will not be able to hold in my anger.:mad:

Did I mention just how EXPENSIVE dining room chairs are when they need to be custom made to match a custom made table?

So much for saving a few bucks. The carpet was destroyed in the living room. I ripped it out knowing that there were hardwood floors underneath. Well, they were destroyed. No refinishing here. More like replace the BLACK ruined sections.


This is a picture of a GOOD section. Notice they somehow spilled paint all over the floor as well.

Guess they never thought you needed insulation (or sheetrock) in the bathroom walls.

With the week i have had i just might meet you halfway:cool: .So i am venting my anger towards yourself :D in a picking on you kinda way:sabduel: :banned1:

We are in our first house. Paid way to much for a way to little...and got bent over in other ways also. We needed to find a house asap and being our first we where bound to get had somewhat. We had a realtor who was awesome though and really worked with us.

We check the house and the lady said it comes with the washer and dryer...sweet they look brand new! $600+ we don't have to spend right off the bat. We end up going a few rounds on the offer and settle (again settled to high...she made out good on this hole). We go to move and what the .... she TOOK the newer washer/dryer and left a super old set that required gas! Was there even gas hookups there....NO. I was po'd and we probably should have scrapped the deal as it was in the contract...and we had the option but didn't.

We have hardwood floors also...all of it is shot to heck. We have been here about 5yrs now and just last month finally picked up laminent(sp) flooring that will we cover most of the old stuff with.

Great memories here...but we can't wait to move on.

It's amazing how rude sellers can be. First house I bought was sturdy but left in a totally flithy condition (brown rugs that after 5 shampoo's revealed themselves to actually be red!) Every flat surface had to be scrubbed and painted immediately, 6 years of Christmas trees (with decorations mostly still attached) tossed over the deck into the backyard...blech...they used it for a personal garbage dump. Never buy a home in the winter when the snow covers up a whole bunch of nasty surprises!

Oh and it was ever so much fun finding their big ugly hairy untrained and never clipped dogs stuff left in the walk-in pantry...and the dog sitting out on the deck soaking wet. Once I phoned the seller's mother, who happened to own a very chic giftware store, and threatened to tie said disgusting wet dog to her store's front door, they came in their truck, grabbed their dog and tore off (of course not stopping to even pretend to explain why the dog was there in the first place!)

Oh and forgot to mention, when we legally took over the house....they were still there! We show up to start cleaning those gross carpets, the idiots aren't even done packing let alone out of the house. Fun, fun, fun experience for a first time homeowner. :mad:

We bought our first home in August. The house is 20 years old so it does have some issues, but nothing that should not be expected with a house of its age. In our contract, all the appliances except the washer and dryer were to remain........we got everything else for 'free' basically because I got them to subtract the approx. cost of each appliance off the purchase price of the house since everything was 5+ years old....I refuse to move into a home only to have to replace stuff. Everything works great anyway except the icemaker on the fridge, so I don't think I could have gotten a better deal on that.

Just feel great that you don't live in South Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina...our homeowners insurance is around $275 a month....that is nothing nice to add to a morgage payment.

275 a month? that is soooooooooo unfair!

ours is 300 a year!

I know what you mean when you say the seller took everything that wasn't bolted down. When we looking for our home, we looked at a few HUD forclosures. One house had nothing left, I mean nothing! They had taken all the light fixtures, the doors, the light switches, electrical sockets, and even some of the wiring. They had even torn out the kitchen cabinets, counter and sink! I guess they figured if they were losing the house, they were taking as much with them as they could. We ended up buying a house that was 8 years old, completely finished, and in pretty good condition. I'm so glad we decided not to buy a "fixer-upper". I hope the remodel goes well for you from here on out.

Sorry to hear of all your bad luck. I know hindsight is 20/20 but that is why when you buy a "used" home you should always make your contract contingent upon a full inspection by a certified home inspector.
I build homes for a living and know how people are when they are trying to sell.
As for insulation in the bath walls you would only have that if it was an exterior wall not a interior wall. And instead of sheetrock you should use "green board " or durarock around tubs and 3 foot up in showers.

The sad part is that we did use a home inspector. Charged us $450 for basically nothing now that problems are being found.
We also had to do the Radon test and pay for 3 seperate soil samples since there is an underground oil tank.
All tests and the inspection came back fine. The only thing noted on the inspection was that the roof might need to be replaced within 5 years. Nothing about the chimney!
He did catch some plumbing which had to be changed before we could move in at the sellers expense since it was not up top town code and they had to pay to have the upgraded electrical checked by the town.
I have contacted a lawyer and will attempt to get some compensation back. So far it doesn't look like we can do anything about what they took since it was not in the contract to keep. The home inspector is the one we are focusing on.

Steve, if those "home" inspectors are like the ones here dont be surprised that he knows the old owners.You know the ones who get the greased palms to accidently on purpose miss certain flaws:mad: .I would also check the BBB and file a complaint as his services were shotty and they might have more on him.Good luck from here on out :)
