Alright Big Day, Big Day...
Ok its a big day for me. I have two snakes in transit right now. Two snakes from two different sellers. One is a 100% Albino female from Steve, and the other is a 850+g female from a seller on kingsnakes.com
I'm very nervous because the temp right now is 8 degrees outside  I've never gotten a snake shipped to me before so thats not helping either. They both said they are putting heat packs in, so I'm hoping and praying that they'll both be ok.
I put this thread in the picture forum because.... I will take some photographs of each of them on arrival. Someobody please give me some reassuring words about the temp. Thanks!

Re: Alright Big Day, Big Day...
Great! I love opening that box, it is so exciting!! When i got my snake, even though it probably wasn't too cold, there was a heating thing on the top of the styrafoam (mine was packaged VERY similar to yours, check out the PIED!! thread...there are pix of how it was done). You know the warmers that you put in your gloves or shoes when you are skiing or in really cold weather? that is what was put into her box to keep her warm.
enough about the packaging, beautiful snake!!!!

Re: Alright Big Day, Big Day...
Chad, anyone that ships ball pythons in 8 degree weather is just plain nuts and has no regards for the well being of the ball python. :rainon:
But I do hope they arrive alive and wish you the best of luck. :)
It would be a good idea to have a vet. lined up that knows how to treat respiratory problems.:rainon:

Oh I don't know about that. I would imagine if the person shipping packs the animal properly and knows what they are doing, it should be fine. Of course, I'd ony ask that of someone that I KNOW has tons of experience packing animals for all sorts of weather.
My biggest concern would be to watch for storms that may occur anywhere along the transfer route that could cause delays. Then it could get scary. But if the shipper keeps an eye on things like that, and adjusts the shipping schedule accordingly, it should be fine.

Re: Alright Big Day, Big Day...
Ok well I got the second one! Problem is she is very cold. She is alive and moving around, but the insulation wasnt as good as the first one and shes pretty cold. I put her in her cage and shes got into her hide on the warm side to warm up...
My other girl was nice and warm when she showed up, very well done Steve
I'll have to post the pics of the second when I get home from work.

Re: Alright Big Day, Big Day...
Glad you like her.
Ed,
You can ship in cold weather as long as th ebox is insulated, heat packs are used, and you make sure transit time is minimal.
This girl got to him at 7:46am today. She started her journey at 4pm yesterday. Very minimal time to get to her new home. I ship using the first overnight option in cases of extreme cold/hot temps.

Re: Alright Big Day, Big Day...
WOOT! Shes in there exploring her new cage now, so she must be pretty well warmed up. I think that vet idea may be a good one.
btw, very pretty lookin pied amy!

Steve, I use heavy insulated boxes with 2 or 3, 40 hour heat packs.and also use early AM priority option. I draw a line at a certain point as to safe shipping with the thoughts of the animal being the most important thing. In my opinion 8 degrees is much to cold to ship a live snake. especially when the whole area has been hammered by a major snow storm and the possiblity of delays are great. you can not predict transit time under adverse conditions such as this. Once again the absolute most important thing is that live snake in the box! just my opinions. :)

Re: Alright Big Day, Big Day...
While I do feel like proper packaging could make a great difference, I feel like better safe than sorry is appropriate when dealing with a live animal. Isn't that worth waiting an extra day or two? I'd certainly undertand if a breeder wanted to wait to ship me a snake due to weather.

Re: Alright Big Day, Big Day...
The snakes well bieng is extremely important but I have enough confidence that no matter what the temps, it will arive safe and sound the way I pack. The insulation alone is 3/4 thick.
I would never ship anything (much less an expensive animal like this one) if I wasn't pretty sure that nothing would go wrong.
Maybe I have been lucky, but in almost 4 years of shipping I hae never had a DOA and only one box got routed wrong that took 2 days to arrive. The snake still made it to the destination without problems even with the delay.

Re: Alright Big Day, Big Day...
congrats, i hope that last one will be alright :)

Re: Alright Big Day, Big Day...
Congrats on the addition of two new snakes in one day! Must have been very exciting.

Re: Alright Big Day, Big Day...
From this it seems that proper packaging makes ALL the difference if your going to ship when its cold. The heat pack in the second one wasn't placed the best, and had less insulation. Therefore she was real cold. She warmed up pretty fast and has been exploring her cage quite a bit, so she seems fine. I will see if she eats next week and possible make a vet appointment to get her checked out.
So here's the second one!

She must be camera shy, I didn't notice but you cant see her face in any of the pics. She is an 850g normal female. She seems pretty docile so far, although she was cold. Unlike the 100% het, the het might be a firecracker, she hasn't struck yet, but has looked like shes thought about it. Which is okay for now, because the het can't be much over 100g

Re: Alright Big Day, Big Day...
She's a Beauty!!!! Congrats on both!

She is hungry. She was scheduled to eat Friday night (I've noticed that If her feeding schedule is off by one day she gets very anxious and want's to know where the meal is:eek: ). That girl has a really good food response. Offer her a f/t rat pink and she'll be happy.:D Just don't try to hand feed her the pink.:colbert:

I'd love to feed her, I guess I'll wait until next friday, leave her alone for a week, but I'm very happy she has been a good feeder. I'd sure like a chance at Albinos sooner than later =)
Thanks Entropy! I saw her in a pic with a few others that he had, and I just had to have the one with the stripes. I've seen a few beautys with that stripe pattern on b-p.net here and I just couldn't resist!
