Incorrectly sexed BP
What are the potential concequences of putting incorrectly sexed BPs together? Some of us have to go on what we are told, but everyone makes mistakes. So if you have what you think is a male and a female, and they turn out to be two males, what would the behavior be like? Would they fight? Ignor each other? I mean, we may think we know, but they know for sure. I'm asking because the time is close at hand, and I don't want a tragidy if I have been told wrong.

Re: Incorrectly sexed BP
I heard sometimes they will try to copulate, only one's way of showing dominance. Sort of like prison:D

Re: Incorrectly sexed BP
Best way to prevent this is to learn to probe them yourself :D

Re: Incorrectly sexed BP
it could possibly lead to a fight for dominance.
The ball python video from Dr. Seward shows 2 males fighting for mating rights with another female...that's one of the tricks to get males into "breeding mode"..
this is just one of the possibilities. they could very well just ignore each other..

Exactly. I sex every snake I buy as soon as it arrives no matter who it is coming from. I pop most of mine, but I do probe sometimes. Either way is very easy to learn. I could not imagine trying to breed any type of snakes without knowing how to properly sex the animals.

I have tried popping (boy, do they love that), and on the hatchlings its pretty clear, but with the adults it's a little more ambiguoius. I checked the community college, and they don't offer a course on it, and I don't have anyone locally to take the time to show me. As a health care professional, I am not willing to put a metal probe into anything without supervision. And, from what I've read here, even the experts are wrong or unsure from time to time. My question was about behavior, as I am sure this has to have happened to someone.

It would be best to know before you place them toghter, but I understand your concern. When mature males are placed toghter, you will often notice a display of dominance, this may be one snake bumping his body, or slamming its body into the other. If there is a large weight difference one may look for a means to escape the area .

Re: Incorrectly sexed BP
Once you learn you'll find it is very simple. Just don't take someones elses word for the sex of your snake thats where the mistakes come into play.

Have you called the NC Zoo's Reptile Department to see if they know of any reputable herpers in your area who can teach you to probe? Or ask them for a herp vet referral near you - who can also teach you? How far is Rich from Reptile Basics from you? How about the NC Herp Society? They may know someone near you.
I don't know where you're located, but I'm driving to Greensboro a few days before Christmas - I could even teach you if you'd like if you're not too far from there.

I live just north of Wake Forest. Any actual help I can get with this would be greatly appreciated.:stupidme:

Re: Incorrectly sexed BP
Let me see what my mom has planned for the short visit, maybe I can meet you some time on Friday if you're in town.

Re: Incorrectly sexed BP
Well, as it turns out, the "he" that I adopted from the Rescue is a "she". A full figured gal, at that. My scale only goes to 2000 gm and she pegs it out. I see her making beautiful music with the Emperor when the time comes.

Re: Incorrectly sexed BP
Excellent! So, are you still interested in learning how to probe, or did you get someone to teach you?
Looks like I wouldn't be able to meet in December, but I'm planning another full week long trip in February or March.
And clarification of Wake Forest - the town or the University? Two opposite directions! :)

Re: Incorrectly sexed BP
Town. And yes, I would love to learn how to probe. I bit the bullet and popped both her and the Emperor, and it was pretty distinct. I hope they are all that easy. If you have time in the spring it would be great to get together. I'll get some probes and we can really piss them off. Oh, and now I need a name. I was waiting till I knew for sure.

Probing doesn't really piss them off - and I have a set of probes I can bring with me if you don't have any by then!
