I would say if the price is right, go for it. As far as I know, Fender guitars are still decent. If you know someone who plays that can try one out for you, so much the better.

My dad has had several Stratocasters and I have played several too.. always like them.. well, as long as they are the American made ones.

yes, these are made in america... not the overseas ones. that's a different "name" on the guitar. ;) (see i learned something today at the guitar store LOL)

What style of music will he be playing most of? thats always something to consider when choosing a guitar as some are more suited to certain types of music whereas some are sort of "all purpose".........also, has he expressed an interest in a particular shape/colour and/or brand name?

    Re: electric guitar
he's 13... he loves metal... heavy metal. so we are getting him a peavey (spell?) amp as that's what was recommended to us.

and at this point... he doesn't know anything about electric guitars so he doesn't have a preference.

    Re: electric guitar
My first amp was a Peavey, and they are my favourite, especially the performance series, if I ever buy my own stage setup, it will be Peavey top to bottom LOL

If I were you, I would check this out http://www.zzounds.com/item--EPISPII
thats the one I'd be buying him, but I'm biased since I'm a Les Paul freak LOL but from what you said, its likely going to deliver more of what he'll be after...p.s. Black is hot ;) :D

here is a good review page for that model in particular http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/revie...l_2/index.html
all the new kids are playing them :P

if your looking to order from a Canadian retailer, theres a shop in my city that has an online shop and does shipping, let me know if you want the link

True, it doesnt....I personally would never use one, and neither do 90% of the players of the music he likely is into.... but I'm also all about giving my kids what they want, so if he wants a whammy bar, he should have one ;)

    Re: electric guitar
it's about the only thing he talks about regarding an electric guitar... so ya, i want it to have one ;)

he has an accoustic guitar already and he's very gifted... he is picking it up so naturally. his guitar teacher doesn't care which one he plays in class and he's welcome to bring whatever he wants to play that day... so that's nice. he adores his teacher!

his teacher is more concerned about assisting his passion... cause without passion, he won't go far.

he has NO idea he's getting this. i've told him he has to play the accoustic for at least a few more years before i'll consider buying him an electric. we went in to see how much they are so we could 'gift' him some money towards his future guitar for christmas... but this was too good a deal to pass up (50% off).

and as adam says, "those smiles are priceless!" (not an exact quote but close enough)

Trust me. He's gonna go nuts for that! :D Haha it's very nice and honestly, some of the Mexican made Fender's are just as good as the American ones I have played. What kind of amp does he have? I can point you in the right direction for a lil practice amp that's just plain amazing and a great value!

It's called a Roland Cube 30. It's AMAZING! Sounds out of this world with Boss effects (Roland owns Boss) and it has received nothing but raved reviews. I have a full stack myself but for a lil practice amp that would be my ultimate choice. You can also plus a lil CD player into it and jam with it as well as you can plug an acoustic guitar into it. We have these 300.00 Martin acoustic elctric guitars at my work and I plugged it into the Roland and the tone was out of this world! Thay sell for 219.00 and it's hands down a killer value.

I would go with the fender myself. I always wanted a fender strat and once had the ultimatum to choose either a fender squire strat or a Mongoose freestyle bike (before mongoose sold out)...

Needless to say I ended up going for the Bike but to this day wish I went for the guitar. I was in the 6th grade though as well...so for me getting around the neighborhood a little easier was more on my mind. lol

As far as Peavey products are considered. I'm not generally knowledgable on the guitar end of things but I know their Pro audio ( Dj/pa ) stuff is great. I'd reccomend their stuff to anybody.

Yeah I'd prefer a Peavey PA before I get another amp from them. I had the 5150 amp and it was ok, but nothing amazing. My current amp though is just what I've dreamt of. I was playing it last night and I set my V up with heavier strings and detuning and man, it just roared with such feirce power.

HAHA no 65. 65 is too much tension. My V is a long scale neck so I dont need as much tension. However on my ESP Les Paul I need a 60 since it's a short scale neck. But man the tone and roar I heard last night. I felt like a prom queen again! And yes, It's in B.

    Atta boy! Grim it up!

(I had to drop from 70's to 65 to get the tension right on the Viper - but it's got some chest-thumping chunkitude)

Oh ok. A Viper is short scale like my Les Paul. So A 65 I can see. I'd probably go with a 58 or 60.

Either would be far easier to play that's for sure - but for that Sabbath/Runemagick deeeeeeep doooooomy drone . . . .

You'd want a lil slack in the strings. It'll be more doomy. To me if it's too tight it wont sound like it's tuned down.

Haha truuuuust me - you can still bend the lowest notes appreciably - there's more than a little slack.
