    RI+VET= ??? What should I expect ???
This question is for the people who went to a vet for RI.. What should I expect $$$ wise.. and whats the process?

I called and they said they charge $75 to see the animal and then anything on top gets added on IE meds..

Could someone give me a brief idea of what the DR should or shouldn't do..

    Thanks.

Price varies from vet to vet. Some mark up the meds to make a huge profit and some are very fair in their pricing. Its hard to say.

I agree with Jamie. Some vets want that new car in one visit just like some doctors for us,others are fair(my vet is fair).Let us know what happens

Hard to say without seeing the snake ... I would think that blood work would be a stretch, but for an RI, a culture would be appropriate (lab work is expensive, but worth it) ... lung wash might come up if it's a serious infection, but that is rare (and big bucks) ... the $75 "should" cover the office visit and standard reptilian work up (weight, physical exam, etc) ... he/she might push for a fecal, but only if the snake is not eating or has external physical symptoms that might suggest it's necessary.

Other than that, syringes and anti-biotics will run you a few $$$'s, but you can't avoid that if you'd like your snake to get well.

It varies ... different parts of the country will cost more ... other areas will cost less.

You're snake is sick ... not getting it help shouldn't be an option regardless of price.

If you're concerned about pricing, why not call around and check what the different vets in your area charged the last few times they had to treat a standard RI ... they sould be more than happy to help ... that will give you an idea of what the norm is.

You've been given a lot of good advice and also told why what a vet charges in New York City isn't going to be the same as in Louisville, KY. What more would you like?

I've heard of URI's treatments running from as low as $85 to as much as $350 (and more in some cases).

It's not like buying a VCR, it really depends on the severity of the illness and the method of treatment needed/chosen by the vet.

$120 for vet, five shots, and dewormer (not convinced that was necessary).
    Good Luck!

Everyone is saying they had 5 shots! So im guessing you have to give the med to the snake yourself right? How is it done? Its not a needle is it? :O

Yes, you do need to give the anitbiotics via injection. The vet should show you how to do it. ;)

It is a needle-every two days-upper third of the snake-switch side muscles. Remember to hold the medicine in after the shot. The liquid will leak out. Not as bad as the dewormer medicine. Why he didn't bite me I don't know.
    I would have.

adam has shared in the past that med's by mouth are not effective on RI - so shots would be your best method!

My vet visit was $43 and that included check up and 5 shots.
Yes they are given by injections. Really isn't that hard, I just have a horrible needle phobia and actually I've been able t give my girl her shots, along with the help from my friend but yeah it's not all that bad.

EDIT: I paid 40$ for a bottle of amikacin and recieved the syringes for free.

I have 300 syringes at 3 different sizes and a bottle of amikacin(sp). I treated my entire collection for an RI because it was being passed back and forth. I gave shots to 3 ball pythons and a boa. From my experience a boa has a lot more tolerance for pain than the balls do. You must make sure that the shots are being injected into the upper 1/3 of the body... any lower and your risking your snakes life as the kidneys could potentially shut down. What I did upon giving the injection was take 1/2 of the upper 1/3 of the body and put it in a pillow case. Have a second person hold the snake and the pillow case with one hand and hold about 3 inches lower on the body with the other hand. Then you can proceed to make the injection. Inform your helper that once the meds are injected do not let go... afterwards hold the spot in which you injected and proceed to rub it without pulling your finger off in turn forcing the medicine to stay put! Then just let go... your snake will come out of the pillow case like nothing happend at all.

And just for the record I have done it without a pillow case and a helper and the snakes did not hiss, strike or get defensive in any way. They will tighten there body up and proceed to squirm though!

    Sincerely,

About the wormer I was told by a vet here that you can inject the wormer into the food item and then give it to the snake... Is this true?

The vet I talked with was a dumb butt so I wanted to ask you all.
