    Anyone need some Rats?
Hey Everyone...I have been breeding rats for about a year now and usually have just what I need for food plus a few more fancy ones that I sell off to the local pet store. But now that breeding season is upon us my BP have started to slow down or stop eating (which seems to be the case for the pet stores as they really slowed down in selling them too) and so I have about 20-30 extra rats that I need to get rid of.

Most are about 2-3" + tail (so small/med size) that I will sell for $1.50 each.

I also have some fancy rats - blues, hooded, agotti, champagne, etc. that I will sell for $5 each if you are looking for nice pets.

Just drop me a line if interested.

Since they are live I won't ship them but I live in the North Subs of Indianapolis so if interested I will meet you.

    Thanks for looking.

That is too bad...I just finished shaving off their fur coats so they wouldn't be overheaded down there. :sunny:

Better get the glue out. :D

    Now that's an entrepreneur!
Have you tried branching out to less local pet stores? I bet that if you'd undercut their current supplier, they would consider buying from you.. this is what I used to do. But these days, sadly, I am buying more from the pet store I used to sell them to.. can't breed enough!

I have thought about it...but honestly this is just a hobby for me. I usually only have 5 or so extra rats each week which one store can handle. Once my BP's come back to full swing, having more rats to support several stores would require more racks and more work which I don't have time for.

But I have always wished I could make a living doing this (too bad the pet industry doesn't pay better)

The blue hooded one's have been rare in my colony I finally got one out of 100 babie's. I'm definitly going to keep him as a breeder , I also live in FL so I can't help you , How about Petco or another pet store in your area.

I know what you mean. I got 2 blue girls by accident and then recused a blue boy so I have several of blues now (which the pet stores will buy), my wife is also working on Dumbo's and Seal points right now as pets.

As for just the feeders - the other 2 pet stores won't buy outside their current supplier (though mine colony is healthy - they won't risk an outside animal getting in - can't blame them I wouldn't either)

So back to finding someone local you needs some.

Yea i had a buddy who bred alot of rats but one summer he ran short on his rats and was unable to supply a few people.Well long story short i found a lady who had overstock on her rats.So he bought every small rat she had.Within a week all of his rats died.Seems some rats have differant parasites(bugs) and some rats are not immune to others bugs so they died.So thats why petco and such refuse to buy from just anyone.Since you are in Indy take your rats overstock to the reptile show and stand outside and sell them to people who need them. Then take the money inside and buy yourself a snake lol.

Wow i had no idea Brian stopped the show in December. If you want to go to the best one go in August its the breeders expo.I took my daughter in 05 and she saw her first butter, pied and numerous others.Pretty cool show:cool: .If you have no takers on your rats place a ad in a paper and adjust your price to cover the ad.

Yea the show would have fallen on Xmas weekend and it was also the worst attended of the year so I don't blame him. As for the Expo I went this year was very cool and got to see in person a lot of the double recessive BP that everyone talkes about...way cool.

I also placed an add on Craigslist so I will give this a few days before deciding my next step. Indy has seen a lot of "stupid" snake owners getting into the news lately so the least amount attention I draw to my "hobby" the better for now (unforntuate that politics will more than likely start to come into play in Indiana).

Does Indy have any herp clubs? If so, maybe you could offer club members a deal on your surplus rats.

Just a quick *bump* before I start with other options to get rid of some of my extras.

Thanks for all the good ideas by the way.

Yea we have a bunch of "think its a cool status symbol" to carry your snake around and scare people (AKA MORONS) here in Illinois.Watch the responses from that graiglist also we have had a few burgleries after someone posted animals on their.Ya know the type that come to your home and "pretend" to adopt your animal but instead "case" your home out for later.Dogs that were adopted like this have shown up in dog pounds or let loose to roam:mad: .

I was worried about that exact thing with Craigslist so in the ad I offered to meet them somewhere mutual. Not only to keep any bad elements out of my home but to also not expose my true snake habit - as I assumed I would get people wanted rats as pets and not just food. Those "Rat" people can be nuts.:rolleye2:
