Re: If it looks like a lemon..
cool! lol. whats he eating now? mice?
-
Re: If it looks like a lemon..
Yup.
Actually she's eating mainly small rats; I think we'll be going with mice though, as I really need to grow up more rats for my snakes.
We are thinking Benny is a female; no dark mottling under the throat.

Re: If it looks like a lemon..
I've been doing web searches for pacmans. Trying to find one thats in rescue and needs a home, or at least captive bred. Did you get yours through a pet store or a breeder?

Re: If it looks like a lemon..
I actually got her a few years ago at Petco. I think it was around 2002 when we got her; since Mark and I got together in '01 and it was after we moved..
I remember reading somwehere that if you buy an albino, you are almost guaranteed that they were captive bred, as they are hard to find/impossible in the wild..
I also know that breeding these is supposedly near impossible. The males oftentimes will drown the females during breeding; then, to top it off, the tadpoles and froglets are cannibalistic, so each one needs its own little cup to live in.. yet they need fresh water while developing; I heard of one breeder who had it set up where they were in cups with holes in trays, and in a large tray of water, so the water could be changed and the cups/frogs replaced easier.
Give me a few, I think i remember a breeder who had some..

Re: If it looks like a lemon..
Thanks! Just don't squeeze this one.. he will make a sound. (they make the weirdest trilling/squeaking sound if disturbed.. definately not what I would expect out of this type of frog..)

I was gonna ask you what type of substrate you used, but I saw on another post coco fiber. Oviously this has worked well:) How often do you change this? Do you provide extra heat, if so how? Everyone has something different from paper toweling replaced everyday to top soil mixtures. And basking lights to undertank heaters:confused: Everybody has a favorite, I'm just not sure where I will start.

Re: If it looks like a lemon..
Thats a nice one!!:) We were looking at the albino ones today. Mine is on adult mice. Will not accept F/T at all. Yours is so tame looking. I handle mine often and I could never trust him to sit on the back of my hand.

Re: If it looks like a lemon..
ejc; I use the coco fiber, and change it roughly once every three months or so. Any fecal matter is presented in a funny way; she jumps out of the hole that she was buried in, leaving the poop at the bottom to easily scoop up. :) I have stopped providing a water dish, as they don't drink anyway but rather absorb the moisture through their skin; so I just keep the substrate moist and it works fine. It is very important not to let it dry out; as it is probably harder to remember to keep moist without a dish, but I remember.
Nancy, Benny is pretty tame; not that energetic I think would be more like it. :) I take her out once a month or so for a lukewarm bath, to check on things and peel off any shed skin that gets stuck (especially in the folds of her back legs.. pretty weird but it sticks there.) As for small rats, I just place a live one in there, and she'll do an about-face, kinda like an army tank focusing in on target, and kinda grabs it headfirst with that tongue; it is stickier than super-glue!
I have actually been bitten by one of these; it was a male I had years ago, before the advent of internet caresheets; sadly he died of MBD. But he clamped down on my finger and actually drew blood at one point..!

About extra heat; I don't need to use anything special. I keep her tank in the warmest part of the house, strategically near a heating vent, and it stays right around 80 degrees with some variating; in summer, it is about that in our house (at least in that room.)
Moisture is key; I make sure that the substrate is never dry, nor soaking, soppy wet. Many people provide water dishes, but honestly my frog never used it, so I rely on the moisture from the substrate to keep her hydrated (haven't had a problem yet.) About once a month, I unbury her, soak her in some warm water and peel off any skin that may be stuck on her (especially where it gets stuck in their fat folds, near the back legs.) If kept too cold, these frogs will just spend all of their time buried; mine does this regardless of if I bump her tank temperature to 85 or it stays normal.. so I do wake her up for feeding once a month, and a soak.. this method has worked well thus far! I feed mostly rat fuzzies, an occasional bunch of nightcrawler worms too.
