Happy's gone.......
My horse Happy died tonite.
Found him down in the mud (& NO thx to the ppl who were supposed to check on him during the morning) don't know how long he was down.
Usu we can roll him and get him back up, and we almost did it, but the 3x he tried, he couldn't get his front feet under him (his hooves were cocked under). Then my "help" disappeared. Happy started grunting and breathing really hard, so I called the vet.
*%*%&%&%&%& VET ADMIN!!!   I kept trying to tell her I had to leave the phone! but she wouldn't listen. All the time I was trying to leave, Happy was lunging trying to get back up, but there wasn't anyone there (I was by myself then) to help support, encourage or balance him to get him on his feet. BTT I got back to him, to try again, he was flailing his legs, kicking and he gasped his last. :tears: :tears: :tears: :tears:
I was near him, but didn't even get to say goodbye. :( It wasn't supposed to be painful for him. If I thought he would have gone THIS way, I would have had him PTS before now. He was doing soooooooooo well, this was sort of unexpected. He hadn't eaten his feed today, so I don't know, but could imply that he went down earlier....but that's just a guess. I wished I had known, so I could have gotten him up soon.
Bye Happy. You were loved for 30+ years, and you'll be missed.

Re: Happy's gone.......
I'm so very sorry to read of Happy's passing and your difficulties in getting the humans around you to help you help him. That must have been gawd awful and only added to your distress, which is great enough when saying goodbye to a lifelong equine friend.
Perhaps when you feel up to it you might like to share some photos of you and Happy over those years as a tribute to him. I know many members here love horses and would enjoy sharing your good memories, as well as providing you the comfort of knowing exactly how you feel to lose a beautiful animal like Happy. I'm sure Happy lived a wonderful life with you and will be greatly missed but warmly remembered always.

Re: Happy's gone.......
Oh no, I am ao sorry about your loss. 30 years is a nice long lifespan for a horse.. I am sure you gave him the best life he could have lived.
I haven't lost a horse yet, but my friend's colt died last year and I was in tears about it for the whole day.
It sounds like you did everything you could have though; I wish you comfort in this rough time. I like Jo's idea also..

Re: Happy's gone.......
Sorry to hear that Robin. 30 years a long time of friendship and pet or person when it comes to that much time it's an obvious family member and loved one. You know everyone here at BP.net sends you our love and comfort over this. There's no easy way to say that it's ok when in fact you lost a major part of your life. But they will always be there in your memories and heart.

Re: Happy's gone.......
Thanks everyone. The truck finally came by and picked him up. Oregon in their "wisdom", you can no longer bury large animals on your property. *%*%&$&&$&$&$&*$*#*#*(
It wouldn't have been MY land, but at least there would have been a "memorial" spot of sorts to always visit and remember him by. Now all I have is the knowledge that he had to be ignonimously(sp) hauled away. :( :tears::tears::tears: THAT shouldn't happen to such a friend, but I didn't have any choice.
Thx for the heartfelt warmth, and hugs, but I have to go and try and get myself together (read: stop the tears and get cleaned up) in order to start my work shift.

Re: Happy's gone.......
Ru, Happy does have the very best memorial that any companion animal will ever have honey...it's in your heart and your loving memories of a life shared...you can visit it anytime, anywhere and no state law has any say in that.

Re: Happy's gone.......
Maybe you could plant a tree or some other plant or garden, to memorialize him? My landlord did this for his mom actually; planted an oak outside of our house, so that, though he can not get to her burial site often, he can easily remember her with this beautiful tree.

Sooo sorry sweetie. :( Like it was stated, you will always have your memories... I know it doesn't help now, but big hug for you...

Re: Happy's gone.......
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Sometimes it's hard for people to imagine how much we can get attatched to our horses. However I'm sure he's waiting for you on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

Awwwwwww Joanna, THANKS!!!!! *sniff, sniff, bawl* (U've given me a chuckle...My nicknames in HS were Roo & Rizz (after my maiden name Rizzuto))
Judy, Entropy....PCACB, THANKS TO ALL!! for the sentiments. Even tho it's been a week, going out there to feed the other four horses make it VERY hard to NOT mourn. I know it will "eventually" not hurt, but this just sucks.
But ever1 HERE has been sooooooo kind. THANKS!
