Personality Linked to Morphs
So i was wondering if the diffrent morphs have different peronalities, or if it just varies on the snake.
I remember i saw a long time ago that somebody's spider was not eating, and i remember the person saying, "Spiders are usually such great eaters", or something along those lines.
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
It does vary among snake's but I have heard and read that Spider's have very curiou's personality's. I don't know yet myself cause I just got mine.
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Amy, heres some of my observations, but keep in mind that this does not apply to all.
Spiders. seem to be inquisitive, calm and very tame.
Mojaves. strong feeders, fast growers and young breeders.
Super Pastels. psycho, psycho, psycho. and seem angry that you made them.
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
haha. thats funny about the supers. when you say psycho, are they nippy? They actually do look kinda psycho in my opinion, i think pewters look that way too. I love them both, but they look kinda crazy. lol.
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Not talking about the super pastels looks, sometimes not a very sunny temperment. (just my opinion) :salute:
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
oh i know. i think they look crazy too though. lol.
Yeah, i dont think that personality can be based on fact either way. It's good to know other people's opinions though.

Yes that little girl that I posted up is ferocious, she will never produce the EBONY but who knows what else?
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
I hear het albinos can sometimes be jumpy as well as het axanthics. Not sure on the truth though, I have only had my male for a month and my female for 2 weeks so I can't really tell from experience.

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Albinos and hets. Bitey!
Spiders. Definitely curious and tame.
Pastels. Hiss and huff and puff.
Pieds and hets. Pain in the butt feeders.
Normals. All over the place.
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
This is the guide to my house...
Lessers : Shy and Sweet, very calm.
Pins: a bit skittish but not bitey. 2 out of 5 are pretty mellow.
Spideys: Sooo Sweet, but very curious. (ie hey! get back in that tub)
Albino: A bit pissy and grumpy.
Hets: all over the place
Normals: ditto.
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Normals: generally relaxed and calm.
Het Hypos: a little skittish but generally calm. Although it took a while for Hazard to stop striking as a baby.
Pastels: curious and tame

mine is vicious. all he does is try and bite me.
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
My het pied can be very tempermental (He's clamed way down from when I frist got him) and my normal is more like a kid than a snake. Tell him to stay put and its like ok now whered he run off to. LOL
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
for me
Axanthic: MEAN, GRUMPY (except when hes with his girls:cool: ) thinks hes a pit viper, open the tub for feeding and he comes flying out with mouth open, ive had to move his tub closer to the floor so when he comes all the way out, he doesnt have a big drop to the floor anymore.
Pastel: could care less, doesnt even acknowledge im there.
Hatchlings: bitey and hissy
Normal Females: kill ya at the chance
Normal males: lazy, eating machines
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs

well. I don't have either yet...we'll see when they get here. The last thing that the guy told me about the pied was, "She`s a little piglet. I know that you`ll like her."
Sooo...i'll let you guys know when i get 'em.

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
With mine they all vary...
Cinnamon Pastel-Awesome feeder, but will never sit still.
Het. Axanthic- Awesome feeder, but does nothing but lie there coiled up.
Normal's- It varies. I have one so laidback my 2 y/o niece can hold her, while I have some that tear your hands to pieces in seconds...
Mojave's- Smart and curious!....mine both figured out how to open their tubs...
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
My pastel fears everything; even prey items, until he figures out they Are prey items.
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
^^Mine too. Exactly. I wouldn't know he had a head if I didn't feed him.^^

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Hehe, I thought I'd rehash this thread. Very interesting. All the tame spider talk makes me want to lean in that direction. What about Mojaves? Any more opinions about them? Oh and Albinos, everyones bitey? Grumpy? Just curious, funny thread...

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Chad, My albinos are the most calm and tame of my whole bunch! Here's a breakdown of the rest:
1. Baby pastels - ferocious and great eaters
2. Adult pastels - laid back
3. Mojave - good eaters, inquisitive, very tame
4. Cinnamon/black pastel - one adult is a picky eater another is an OK eater. but my juveniles are the best eaters of all.
5. Caramel - good eater, calm
6. Spiders - inquisitive, OK eaters, tame
7. Pieds - Mine are a little nippy, even as adults
8. Normals - all over the place, but in general, very easy going as babies and adults.
:)
Alice
p.s. I really liked this post - it's fun to hear about snake "personalities"
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
our 1.3 het albinos are all calm but one female is a grumpy striking machine my 1.1 pastels are eating machine's 1.1 Mojave's are the best to work with and great feeders male black stripe from Corry Woods is OK when he is out just watch you hands getting him out het pied female a escape artist she was found in the rat room helping her self to food 3 months after we lost her normals are all calm except one ch that is a biter ,I think they all have there days tho ;)
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
My three normals are respectively Nippy/fat/possibly gravid; skittish yet inquisitive; and the third one is pretty laid-back. My normal male is quite reactive but not aggressive; my pastel male is terrified of everything including food, until he sees it is food; my het orange is pretty typical balling-up-for-awhile when removed from his cage; and the Spider, you'd have to ask Ed C, since he still has him until shipping time. :)

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
A question for ppl that breed bp's:
Have you ever found personality traits to be hereditary?
just curious
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
What an interesting and enlightening thread!
It also reinforces my new plans of a mojave Morticia instead of my original plans for an axanthic. ;) There's a few reasons, but a nice personality is certainly a perk!

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
1 Wilma is my norm girl very nice but I have to be carefull with her feeding response.
2 Jeanne this girl is a real BBBB she strike's at everthing that move's , once I have her in control she's fine I guess.(Normal female)
3 Mystique is a sweetheart. (Normal)
4 Morpheu's my pastel is scared of his shadow.
5 Neo my Albino is fearless he doesn't mess with me but he isn't scared.
6 Trinity my het-albino is nice but she'll hiss like crazy when I take her out.
7 Link my het-pied is still a little nippy it's going away though.
8 Charlotte is my Spider she's a sweetheart.
9 Fate is one of my poss het-pied girls she doesn't mess with me either.
10 Desire is my other poss het-pied girl she's also nice and calm.
11 No verdict on Mr Smith yet he's my Yellow belly just got him he's nice so far.
So out of my group so far there's only one i really have to be careful with , This girl jeanne see's rat's and me as the same.LOL

I've only had my grantie male for a week but you can tell that he's gonna be a grumpy snake!! Struck at me as soon as he was set up in his tub....I'm giving him another 3 or so days and I'll take him out and see how he is!!

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Orpheus M (Normal) - Calm cool and collected.
Bandi F (Normal) - A real B&*^%. If you ever want to know what its
like to get bit, She'll help you out
Odin M (Het pied) - Hisses but a real active guy once he's out
Pastel M - see Odin
Pastel F - A little defencive at first but real sweet after she calms
down
Spider M - Real sweet no hissing nor hiding he just lets you pick him
up and then loves to explore.
Mojave F - Same as the spider but a little shyer.
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
so now that i have my pied and the het. pied, and know a little more about them i'll add to the thread what i think.
Normal male- coolest snake, loves everybody, never hissed or struck
pied- finicky eater (she bites and constricts great, but if you watch her eat she'll drop the rat)
het. pied- only have taken him out once, cool personality, very cocky, but hasnt eaten yet (i'm trying again tomarrow)

I have a het albino male and possible het albino female... they'll both take a finger off if your not careful! :O

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
I have to say, that I haven't really had any real pissy animals...The het 4 pied I have has hissed onced or twice and my big girl has hissed a couple times when I first got her...but she wasn't held very much by the person who had her before me. Other than that I've been pretty blessed with rather docile and extremely tame ball pythons... I've been bit by only 1 ball python and that was a tiny tiny hatchling that i had bought as my first ball python and it was MY FAULT...I didn't give it a full week to acclimate and the poor thing was just scared...
( I didnt know about the acclimation period at that time... The guy I bought it from didn't give me any kind of information or anything...I bought the barker's ball python book soon after back then)
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
This is great. Its cool how ball pythons have such different personalities, all of my have distinctly different personalities. Its interesting to see these traits that seem to be common in certain morphs. Possible because they're mostly gentetically related??
Luna - Normale female - Shy, pretty laid back most of the time, used to be quite a scarty cat will revert back at times. She can also have her bad days, if for some reason she gets really scared or stressed, she may strike. She has never gotten me.
Big Female - (no name Normal) Big girl and so far big feeding response, I have to try and convince her its not feeding time everytime I open the lid. She hasn't struck yet, but she sure looks like shes wanted to.
Rill - Normal Female - Will hiss from time to time, only when your taking her out, does a lot of moving around and exploring when you take her out
Zesiro - 66% Het for Albino male - Best snake I've got, will eat anything, anytime, anywhere. Would only bite me if he thought I was food (hasn't mistaken me yet) Doesn't flinch much, very active when you take him out, not even very head shy. Awesome snake!
100% Het Albino female - Head shy, not sure too much of her personality yet, but shes a great eater. She had a bad shed, and after a good soak, she and I worked GREAT together helping her shed out, funny how much she knew I was there to help. Smart snake.

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Anybody have a Spider that is aggressive? Or a Mojave that has gone off feed randomly? Or a really nice feeding, tame Pied?
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
I think spiders are the BEST eaters in my experience and yes one of my female spiders was a FREAK.Half the time she just wanted to eat anything including ME  lol.
They are ALL puppy dog tame now even the nasty one and very inquisitive.
I have a Mojave that is a pain in the ASS eater but a GREAT breeder.
Pastels I find are freaks and nasty when young but MOST hatchlings are.
Cinnys I find are GREAT eaters also.
I find Albinos are great eaters but are kind of shy.
ALL of my normal girls are eating MACHINES I find and just NEVER bite except one LOL.I have a 4500 gram female that is just the NASTIEST ball python I have EVER seen. She will bit and bite and bite till you put her down.I HATE cleaning her tub or taking her out  lol

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
The reality is that if you work with these animals in great enough numbers you'll learn that each animal is different ... there are strong feeders and not so strong feeders, shy animals and not so shy animals, aggressive animals and calm animals ... and their particular mutation really has nothing to do with it.

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
I have heard that spiders are more prone to star gazing,ETC. I think that is crazy, a morph isn't in the head of the animal its in its genes and "skin".

my pied is super sweet and a great feeder. She hasn't refused yet, and has a great personality, but, i have not had her for that long, so i don't know for sure yet.

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Well i cant comment an all the others as we ony have the one BP and shes a normal :p
So far she seems to suffer from rather severe moodswings, and if you let her out to wander and she settles somewhere and gets comfy you can be sure youll have a few chunks missing from your hand trying to coax her back into her box, shes really tame if shes getting her own way tho :p
If she spies a finger and you have let your guard down she will strike it :p
I also learned that she doenst like anything within 10 feet of her when shes eating, I was just letting her get on with it but if I moved she struck at me, so I put the lid on the box and left the room :p
Fiesty wee girl, love her to bits :)
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
lol. i have only 1 that is potentially fiest, buttt idk yet, i still have to work with him some to see. really havn't held him much.

My spider and Mojave are both killer eaters they both pounding rat pinks and loving it.

Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Great thread! I was wondering about that.
What about male vs. female balls in terms of temperment differences?
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Well, so far I'm still in startup mode, but here is what I have found:
1.0 het pied male; will eat anything anytime anywhere, even at the beginning of a shed. starts on FT rats within a minute or two. Yearling at 3' and 1100g.
0.2 yearling females; one eats like a pig, anytime, and the other is pickier about timing and quantity, seems to be hesitant about the kill zone (likes to get really slose before striking). weights 1000g and 650g respectively
1.4 early this years hatch ; biggest one eats like a horse, three feed really well, and last one takes up to 20min to kill on live mice
0.4? this years hatch, 3 feed very well and the last one (maybe male??-waiting on probes) is very picky and always trying to escape. the other three are always cuddled in their hide and the one will be out by itself, either sitting there contemplating escape or actively trying to push its way out. Good thing my bins' lids latch....
I've only had one hiss out of any of them, and that was today when I dropped the hide(lightweight) from a couple inches above my big male :0
The hides I'm currently using are thin plastic plant pots in dark green with a rounded half-hole in the side. I try to stick with things that wont hurt the snake if things ever get shaken up.
-
Re: Personality Linked to Morphs
Oh and since this is a morph thread, I should mention that most of my younger BPs are high yellow, showing lots of flames and mostly clear bellies. hopefully I can prove something out, but it'll be awhile.

The color gene mutations almost certainly have nothing to do with their personalities. However, I think its very likely that the methods used to breed them have an impact. For example, the easiest way to isolate a particular gene is through in-breeding. The possible drawbacks of in-breeding are well known and surely apply to snakes.
I would expect that larger, more reputable breeders probably take on the extra cost of mixing in more genes when isolating out a morph. I would also guess that smaller breeders probably engage in much more in-breeding because its faster and cheaper.
