How would i know if my PB is Het anything
Re: How would i know if my PB is Het anything
For recessive traits: It hatched from a pairing involving at least one homozygous recessive animal.
For dominant/codominant traits: It is not wild-type. :D

when you purchased your ball python, if it was het for anything you would have been told. :) (and charged more for it)

I would check the paperwork.....although a clear belly is worth getting excited about from what I hear...

From the paperwork that came with the snake stating its genetics and sex when you purchased a het, and from the price you spent.
Other than that, you can't.

My belly is clean white and no one gets excited about me :(
Re: How would i know if my PB is Het anything
Het's are a lot more money then normals. Also the breeder should have told you what it was het for, if it is het for anything.
Re: How would i know if my PB is Het anything
If a het was visually identifiable, wouldn't that make it a codom? :)
Re: How would i know if my PB is Het anything
I've never heard of PB being het anything.... would it be het for another nut, or jelly?

What do you mean by clear belly?

The belly is more or less devoid of patterning.
Re: How would i know if my PB is Het anything
Really the only way to figure out if your snake is het for anything is to 1: Prove it out (Breed it to multi known hets for the same gene for a couple of seasons and see any morphs hatch) that the long and real tiresome process or 2: Buy from a known well reputiable breed that is know fro producing good hets and pay the extra for the genes.
Re: How would i know if my PB is Het anything
Some hets are fairly normal looking, like the spotnose for example. But yes, any visible het really is a codom because there is a super form.
When breeders think that they have a new morph, they breed it to a normal (or a similar looking unknown), and then breed the offspring back to the original snake to see if anything cool hatches.

Or meet a guy at the convenience store!!!!! :rolleye2:
Sorry, couldn't help it!
Re: How would i know if my PB is Het anything
and again I'll make the offer: all you big breeders out there looking to streamline your line-breeding projects... fund my PhD and I'll give you the "Het Test"... a 100% accurate guarantee that your possible het is either 100% or not. Particularly useful for picking holdbacks for going after piebald axanthic clowns!

Crunchy & creamy are both dominant traits...but crunchy will override a creamy trait, AFAIK.
;)
K~
Re: How would i know if my PB is Het anything
I really think that crunchy is 100% het creamy, think about it. It all can be squished down to creamy.
Re: How would i know if my PB is Het anything
Actualy, wouldnt it be possible for a wild caught snake to be het for something, I know some corn morphs were initally caught in the wild, which means there were almost certianly wild hets. Also, wouldnt it be possible for hets to be produced from a line of "normals" that had just never been line bred to check for hets. If no one ever knew the inital snake was a het, they would have no reason to have ever labeled offspring as such. I do agree that most likely if it wasnt sold as a het, then its not, but it seems there would still be a small chance of having a het and not knowing it.
Re: How would i know if my PB is Het anything
It is possible however trying to prove out an unknown WC het would be more trouble then I'd be willing to go to.
But for a good example of something cool being hatched out from 'nothing' check out VPIs page on their patternless balls.
