What should I do about lighting for my crestey?
we just picked up our new crestey today and a 10galon glass critter tank. we got a 75W moonlight lamp(Night glo). should we only use it at night and get another one or what? I'm new to cresties and I want to make sure the lighting is sufficiant. also, if anyone has any other tips that may not be publicised, we would be very apreciative if you would share that information with us. Thank you for your help.

Cresties actually require no supplemental lighting. Normal room temperatures are fine for them too.

be careful about any lighting that you provide for your crested as temps above 80-82 degrees are harmful to them and can cause death. you really don't need to provide them any extra or supplemental lighting at all. if you choose to just make sure that it doesn't heat up the enclosure.

you don't need the moonglow... just a normal low wattage light bulb is sufficient (if anything) cause really they just need a day and night cycle... heat isn't important to them...

in the summer... too much heat can kill them! so we move ours downstairs into the basement during any heat waves.

Re: What should I do about lighting for my crestey?
cresteds don't need any supplemental lighting, not even a uva/uvb bulb. if you feed them the proper diet they will get all the nutrients they need. you should feed them t-rex crested gecko diet mixed with water and insects that have been dusted with calcium and a vitamins.

unless it gets below 62ish in your house you do not need to provide any extra heating for your new little one.

i keep getting confused, everytime i goto a pet store they are like you need light you need light, maybe they are just tryin to sell i dont know but they seemed like anoyed that i wasnt useing light, and they say to just feed him dusted crickets every 3 days. im so confused.

Also quick question with just a couple sprays on the inside wall of the tanka nd the humidity goes up to like 65 sometimes 70+, is that unhealthy for him?

Let me clear up the confusion.. the pet store is wrong, and mlededee is right. :)

Pet stores love to make $$$.. that's what they do. They'll try to sell you UV bulbs for ball pythons too.

Re: What should I do about lighting for my crestey?
Yea acually they tride to tell me it needed the uv for my python so i got it when i first got the snake. She showed me a book saying geckos, couldnt find cresteds but said they're all the same, and it said they needed UVA and moonglo at night. Also that the lighting does something for its eating habbits, like it controls when they eat.

I mean you guys have had gecko's for how long useing no light and your geckos are healthy right?

Re: What should I do about lighting for my crestey?
day geckos and other diurnal geckos do need uvb/uva lighting. cresteds, however, are nocturnal, therefore they do not require any special lighting. it doesn't matter what the people at the pet store tell you--they DON'T NEED IT! look in the rhac and crested books written by the experts and they will tell you--no special lighting needed. don't waste your money. your gecko will be healthy if you provide it a good diet consisting of cgd and dusted insects, provide fresh water and a clean arboreal environment between 68-78 degrees or so.
