PS3 Craze
Imagine...standing in line for DAYS for a freakin toy....spending hundreds of dollars on something that is probably only worth 70 bucks in parts....and then ya get robbed, ya get shot, ya get jacked over this thing...
Here's a story on a dude getting shot over it:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/17/pla....ap/index.html
Now on Ebay, these things are selling for 10K
what is the deal with this? Playstations are fun, but not that fun
I guess...to each their own...
-
Re: PS3 Craze
Yeah....that's an insanity I really don't get. Nor do I understand why the company...when they KNOW a million people are gonna stand in line for one...only ship out 400k on "opening day"..... :confuzd:
I wouldn't pay that much retail for a game system anyhow....but if I DID want one...I'd just wait a couple months for the furor and the holidays to pass....then just calmly walk in and pick one up without such a fuss.

Ironic. Many would say the same about people that pay thousands, even hundreds for a snake.

Re: PS3 Craze
lol ...i had the exact same thing posted in my original post...but for unknown reasons, i deleted it
They're talking about it on the radio right now and have had a few people call in on why they've been in line since Monday. I think about 95% of the people waiting in line are just throwing these things on Ebay. It's not a bad turn around I guess...spend 6-7 hundred bucks, throw it on ebay and in a few hours it's sold for between 3 and 10 thousand dollars...not a bad way to make a quick buck.
-
Re: PS3 Craze
These things are going for $4k on eBay....starting to wish I would have waited in line with the rest of those crazy idiots....
-
Re: PS3 Craze
judy it's not so easy to just pick one up in a few months. that's the reason they go for so much $$. when the xbox360 came out... it was over 6 months before you could actually walk into a store and purchase one (at least up here). they'd have the empty boxs but no stock!
so if you want to 'gift' your kids the gift that 'counts' (in their eyes) this christmas... you get someone to stand in line or you buy it for outrageous prices on ebay...
my daughter works at an electronics/computer store and they had people camping out yesterday waiting for the doors to open this morning AND they opened earlier than usual... just to handle the crowd so by time the regular customers came... the crowd would be gone ;)
having a hubby and son who LOVE their video games... i totally understand the 'need' to get a system and they will get this one - but not till next year when we can actually get one... $600 x 2 (as they each need their own - heaven forbid they take turns!) is expensive enough... i won't be getting one on ebay!

Hehe....true. For me though, the mystery isn't why people would spend $500 on a game. Many people who like that sort of thing will surely get $500 worth of fun out of it.
For me...the mystery lies in why people would stand in line for three days for a chance to buy a game that they can have relatively effortlessly if they just wait for a few weeks. And if the motivation for all those "line standers" is to turn around and resell it on Ebay for a quick profit...the mystery merely increases as to why people would spend thousands of dollars for something they can have at a fraction of the price....if they just wait a few weeks.
I guess for some...the status of having one of the first new systems to hit store shelves is worth that much time and money. Doesn't mean I understand it though. ;)
-
Re: PS3 Craze
yeah true. On top of that, first generation PS3's are full of glitches...i'd be pissed if i spend a few thousand on ebay for this thing and then it's all full of bugs. wait a few years till the bugs get worked out and pay a fair price...i think i'll do that...i'll end up buying a PS3...but not with those kinda price tags...i got snakes to buy!

Ahhh...we were typing at the same time. But even so...change my arguements to a few months rather than weeks...still applies, at least for me. hehehe...if I can wait 4 years to buy my first BP and another 10 years to get to really start breeding snakes in any number...I guess I could easily wait six months for a game to come out.
And if my kids wanted any object so badly that they expected me to stand in line for days or shell out thousands of dollars for a $500 toy....they'd be getting a lesson in priorities and the real meaning of Christmas. (Not saying that's the right way for everyone to go....just that that is what would happen in this house. ;) )

Sony is having major production/procurement issues with some of the components of the blue-ray technology in the PS3's. It could be a lot longer than a few weeks before they are able to deliver any more stock.
If you are a college student or otherwise non-committed person, standing in line for 3 days to make a $2500 profit doesn't sound all that bad. That's probably more than most of us make in 3 days working normal jobs.......

Can you imagine when the line would start forming at the Daytona expo next year if the first 50 people in the door had a shot a winning a lavendar albino pied (or place your favorite extremely high dollar mutation here) free and clear?
LOL ... I know people that would be headed down there now. ;) :P

And also...that lav-albino-pied isn't going to be easily found for $500 in six months either. :P

We have people who have been sleeping in chairs since Monday at a local Walmart waiting to buy one of these stupid games. The big kicker the games is not for her someone is paying her "a couple hundred bucks" to be the first to buy one.Gee i thought i had no life:rolleyes: .Whoever is willing to pay $3k and up for this plastic going to be outdated the day after X-mas is a real nutcase:rolleye2: .I think something needs to be done to stop this "LIMITED" sales stunts since its causing people to get killed.Limited amount availiable my behind:mad:

 The sales "stunt" didn't cause anyone to get killed. Some bad guys see a group of people standing around and take the opportunity to try and rob them. That could happen ANYwhere a group of people choose to gather.
I don't see this as anything to get upset about or anything that "needs something done" about it. It's just one of those silly things in our society that is fun to watch from the outside...and maybe even exciting for those participating.

Re: PS3 Craze
Well like that news story said, a Best Buy got smart and handed out 140 tickets to the first 140 people and said "go home, come back when we open and give us your ticket"....

Think about this though. If you invest 3k into a snake you can make offspring to recoup your investment. If you spend $600+ on this plastic game box in a years time it will still be a plastic box, just worth less:8: :8:

Well, if we've got to start calling names now ... I guess I'll try and take that as a compliment?
I don't think paying what I need to pay so that my son gets what he wants for Christmas makes me a nutcase, I just want him to have a great holiday.
Well, maybe I'll get outbid and then be "sane".

Re: PS3 Craze
Never buy a system at launch. Always bugs and god forbid it's defected. Yeah the graphics looks great but man those people are just about vanity and want the same status of "Look I have a 14 foot burm" as compared to "I have a PS3!"

Now is that the true reason for Christmas? Everyone get what they "WANT"? Now just so we have no further misunderstandings i am NOT putting you down here.

These toy companies do this crap every year and now people are getting crazier thinking they can not live without these games a couple more months. If i was a kid now i would prefere to wait a couple months or longer for this game box, then lose a parent or a family member waiting to buy this plastic box.:(

Joe, kids getting what they want and knowing the true meaning of christmas are not mutually exclusive, as your previous post might imply.
Any good parent would want to make their kids happy so long as it is within their means. A $4k game system may very well be affordable to some parents, and not affordable to others. Just thought I'd point that out.

I would think that everyones true meaning for Christmas is different ... For us, it's certainly not about EVERYONE getting what they "WANT" ... among other things, for my family it's about a time of reflection, celebrating the birth of Christ with our church, giving back to the community via the Toys for Tots program that we've been volunteering in for the last 10 years (since my days as a jarhead), and taking time out of our hectic lives to spend a lot of quality time together as a family ... oh yeah, and pigging out on moms most awesome cooking!!!! :D
As for my little 5 year old boy, he gets EVERYTHING that he WANTS from Santa ... I work hard and do very well financially for the sole purpose of giving him the best life possible ... and he gets it, no question ... he deserves it ... all you'd have to do is spend a little time with him to know why.
Just curious, if your "NOT putting me down here", what was your point? Why would you call me out on the meaning of Christmas? I thought this thread was about PS3's ... I'm the "nutcase" that's trying to get one ;) ... did it really have to evolve into "why"?

Re: PS3 Craze
Hey, you'd be suprised what I've done for my kids. Just this morning I had to 'save' a worm that was on the sidewalk. Ewwww. The kids just look at me with those eyes and tell me that it's essential we walk back and have ME put the worm back into the grass. I still don't know why I did it. :bleh:
As for toys, I think it's insanity what we go through but it's so worth it when we see our kids faces light up. Do we want them thinking the season is all about them? No. Which is why it's important that they understand how lucky they are and try and give back to the community. My son just helped raise money for Le Bonhuer's Hospital. It's just a matter of keeping things in perspective. :D

Re: PS3 Craze
The meaning of Christmas for me involves no hanger over and not allergic reaction to red wine like I did 3 years ago. God that was an awful morning ...

Re: PS3 Craze
We went to Best buy in Mankato Mn today and picked up 2 of them. We left here at 6 am got there at 7 or so and waited until about 7:45. You only could purchase on there so I got one and Jodi got one. Obviously we are keeping one and putting the other up on ebay for sale. We were very lucky to get them. There were 4 left when we got ours. Ebay money will be going towards new ball python morphs. It wasn't crazy there or anything. Walmart had 4 this morning in Mankato when we got there too.
-
Re: PS3 Craze
My husband and I will be buying a second gen one, I tend to steer clear of 1st gen products since they haven't normally gotten all the bugs worked out.
In Japan the Yakuza purchased more then 80% of the released items then would go outside the stores and sell them many times their original selling price.
-
Re: PS3 Craze
At a Circuit City near me, the guy who was first in line was offered $3000.00 for his place in line and he turned it down. I would have taken the money, put $600.00 aside for a second generation one, and spent the rest on Christmas presents. Don't get me wrong, I would like to have one, but I can wait 8 months or whatever it will take.
-
Re: PS3 Craze
my daughter said that they were selling extended warranties to the people who picked on up this morning... explaining to them that when they put the item on ebay people would pay extra for the security of knowing it'll get replaced if it IS defective :)
i see a deal in the works... david has a PS3 and adam has morphs!!! ;) seems like a match made in heaven to me!
and i must say... my hubby doesn't drink, smoke, do drugs, go to the bar or anything else that costs money... so if he wants a $659.00 new game system with all the bells and whistles... well he gets it. plain and simple. the guy works long hours out in the cold and if he wants to come home and unwind while playing a video game... all the more power to him ;)

i had no interest for the ps3 but after seeing a news article with people waiting days for it, makes me kind of want one. i had a ps1, but lost it, and i never got a ps2.
i dont know about camping out for a game console, but to purchase some justin timberlake tickets, i dont mind doing it :)

Re: PS3 Craze
I have come to the conclusion from years of study that some people are just stupid...plain and simple. I work at a Super Target and there were people standing in line for 2 days straight...uhh. Is something wrong with these people's brains? First they only sent 500,000 copies to the entire United States so there were only 9 PS3 Consoles at S. Target. Why not wait until they fix some glitches or maybe come down on the price $100 or so.
Some make the claim that they might be buying the PS3 so they can sell it for more to other dumb people. The cycle of dumb continues. Maybe I'm being too hard on these people?
-
Re: PS3 Craze
it's 600 bucks not 600,000. i'm sure most of us have wasted more than that away somewhere? if you add up the playing time involved, it's not that bad. the ps3 also has a blue ray player drive in it! the blue rays players alone go for 500 and up. i'll just wait a few months for mine:cool:
adam, if you get one, call me ROAD TRIP!:D

It's business, it's smart. now i can't speak for the people who are spending 5k. If you can afford it, go for it. We can't imagine spending that much because chances are we cannot afford it. If you can afford it (or a $5,000 bp morph), then spend your money how you wish.
As my favorite radio personality (Jim Phillips) says, "it's the essence of capitalism, to turn it around and make a profit from it"...

Yeah true enough...and these people spending the $5,000 for it? I mean...it's supposed to have glitches and everything. Why pay so much for something that might break down on you. Plus I wan't to see what games come out for it before I even think about buying it.
Um Kavmon I never said it costs 600,000 re-read what I said. :) And you can get a console for 600 with 60 GB's and a console for 500 with 20 GB's.

Re: PS3 Craze
Hmm, it's interesting to me that someone would pay double (or more) of what something is actually sold for just to get it a month or two before everyone else can get it. Plus it's defective. In my opinion that's just not smart. "Patience is a virtue" :D

I agree. But here would be my concern; We know that production was rushed to get a release date before Christmas, so there are bound to be defective units. I think that even if $5000.00 was chump change to me, I would still feel like a horse's backside if I plugged it in on Christmas day and got nothing but a puff of smoke :(
