Eating their current fling?
On another board there is a posting about a female that ate the male that was put in with her for breeding. The posters name looks familiar from here though I'm not sure so they may jump in an give the specifics. In any case, other then being a devistating shock to the owner, has anyone else ever had this happen?
-
Re: Eating their current fling?
Now I have something else to be paranoid about..! Geez, if this happened to my snakes, I would be going nuts.. hopefully this does not happen.. I am interested in anything anyone has to add.
-
Re: Eating their current fling?
I'd copy the whole story but I don't think it's allowed. What is worse is that it was a morph male, a cinny I believe.
That would be a hard thing to find. Or not find as the case may be. I just feel really really bad for the owner. Not too often your investments can eat each other.

Re: Eating their current fling?
great, i thought tarantula breeding would be difficult since there's a good chance the female will eat the male but i didnt think it would be possible for the same thing for snake breeding.
-
Re: Eating their current fling?
I doubt this is common. Tarantulas make a habit of it. :D
-
Re: Eating their current fling?
Adult Ball pythons eating one another while breeding, highly unlikely. but I guess anything is possible? :O
-
Re: Eating their current fling?
Wow thats pretty crazy...
I'd be a little skeptical until I saw some pictures though...
Off Topic: Ed that is one classy avatar...looking good:sweeet:

Re: Eating their current fling?
I don't believe the male was an adult Ed. I believe I've seen you on the forum I'm referring to so I'm sure you'll see the post eventually.

Re: Eating their current fling?
can you PM me the link or somethin?

I didn't think the link was allowed but ok.

Re: Eating their current fling?
That poster would be me. Yes, it is true. Be as skeptical as you like. What kind of proof would you like? Want me to knock the female around so she will regurge become ill and die as well?
She ATE him. You can FEEL him in her.
He was mature and producing sperm, but only half her size. They were SUPPOSED to be breeding. Cooled properly, having breeding from some of my other males, but of course my cinnamon female was reserved for him. My breeding project I've invested all the time and money and effort into. Hoping for a super cinnamon. She ATE him.
I'm beyond devestated, and actually have considered giving up entirely, as this is just a humongous blow. I can't afford even a hatchling cinny to replace him, and even if she does breed with something else for me, I still have lost a good year or even two years on the breeding project.
I dunno about the link being ok or not, but feel free to ask questions here too.
Disgusted is,
Wolfy

Re: Eating their current fling?
Like i responded in the other forum, I really hope you don't give up. In a few years i'm sure you'll look back at this mishap and be able to crack a smile about it. it's just one of those freak accidents that is not supposed to happen, but it does...and it set you back one year. Keep your chin up and stick with it. don't let this get you down.
-
Re: Eating their current fling?
As I posted earlier I am sure it's incredibly hard, I couldn't imagine having that happen to me.
However don't give up Wolfy, everything worthwhile in life comes with some hard knocks and this one is a doozy. You still have a gorgeous pastel and a stunning spider that should give you a good season, and, if luck was with you the little snot was knocked up before she pulled the 'Black Widow' on the poor boy.
Or perhaps someone could offer an adult cinny male to try with her.
Once again I'm very sorry Wolfy.

Re: Eating their current fling?
wow. That is really scary. When i start breeding i think im going to have to put my male in on a friday afternoon, and watch them for a few days. If i raise them from hatchlings, and have put all of that money into them there is no way im going to let them eat eachother. lol.
I'm really sorry about your loss. I have never had a snake die, and im assuming that having one eaten just increases the blow. Please dont give up, breed this year, take some of the profits and get yourself a male Cinn. or maybe a breeding pair so your female doesn't eat another snake... although this was enough of a freak accident, i dont know if it could happen again.
We look forward to seeing some super cinns from you one day! and ill make sure to get one, because that sounds just awesome.:carrot:

Re: Eating their current fling?
Yeah, just my luck. I talked to someone else very experianced who said he'd never heard personally of an adult eating another adult(in other words direct from the source or seeing it himself) but said that especially large groups of babies it happened rarely.
Not really often, but maybe 3 in 5000 pythons. That was his rough estimate.

I'm not posting anything one way or another but I will offer my sympathies :(

Re: Eating their current fling?
Wow; I am extremely sorry about this loss.. I don't know what to say. If anyone doubts you or says something negative when this really happened, they must just be heartless. I know of many cases where breeders used tiny males; just read on another forum that someone successfully bred his 200-odd gram male to a female. I hope you don't give up though; again I offer my deepest regrets.

Re: Eating their current fling?
Oh goodness, I am so sorry to hear this news. This couldnt of happend to a better person.
I to hope you dont give up, just remember this happend for a reason... doesnt feel good right now, but I'm sure this happend for some reason.
Keep your chin up and know that we all wish you luck this season with everyone else you have.
Also on another note, I was wondering about this snake eating another snake thing....I'm just surprised that another snake can fit into the belly of one to begine with. Are they usually throw up? Are there problems that the snake who did the eating could face..etc.

Re: Eating their current fling?
Guess what I found in the bin?
I have had Tina out multiple times, I have cleaned the bin completely twice, and NOW....
Tony returns...

No, I don't know how. They live in BINS in a professional rack system. The bin was pushed completey closed at all times. Yet, here he is.
Any theories? So far I have been offered the following explanations:
1. A wormhole opened and took him elsewhere, and then brought him back.
2. I am actually a meth user and simply am completely unaware of it.
3. I have multiple personalities and one of THEM took him, hid him somewhere in my house, then replaced him.
4. My snakes are conspiring to give me an anuerism in the most creative way possible.
At any rate, I am EXTREMELY glad that Tony is not dead, being digested. I do NOT know why Tina suddenly gained approximately 500 grams, when not eating. She is giving me dirty looks, and I am most apoligetic to not only her for telling her she would be put into the blender, but also to this board for the amount of grief I displayed, when apparently Tony was simply.. in another dimension briefly.
It doesn't help that I was watching Xfiles about half an hour before finding him.

Re: Eating their current fling?
Glad you found him! Now go love on that girl and apologize to her for all the awful thoughts you had towards her! :D
-
Re: Eating their current fling?
I think its #3 caused by #2 that would explain it. ( I am just kidding, hope you can take a joke.)
-
Re: Eating their current fling?
With my life being as weird as it is, I have to be able to take a joke.
LOL. Tina is getting all the best, and I'll even make sure to give her only her favorite colored ratties.

Re: Eating their current fling?
well... i guess you couldn't "feel" him in her after all eh?
sorry... gotta laugh! :P

Generally I would start off with #2 as drug use is rampant and explains away odd behavior in most cases. You don't seem to fit the profile though (I haven't seen you offering your DVD player or kitchen knife set for a fix). #3 is very possible and can only be confirmed by a professional. #1 is the most intriguing and my choice. I loved that Martin Lawrence movie where he goes back to medieval times. Black man in a football jersey in the middle ages. Quote from the film:
Guard #1: Who be ye?
Jamal: Who be I? I be stompin' yo ass you put your hand on me one more again!
Absolutely hysterical and really an all around enjoyable family film. I highly recommend it!
But I digress....
In all seriousness (and nothing above fits that) I am glad you found him and I hope you have an awesome breeding season! Sign me up for one of those super special Cinnies that you produce!! :)

Re: Eating their current fling?
Well this was an odd story
-
Re: Eating their current fling?
WOOHOO! Glad you found him! That's awesome.
-
Re: Eating their current fling?
aww I like a happy ending.
I vote you buy her a nice bouquet of rats with edible mouse skin ribbons - oh and I also vote for explanation 2 :rolleye2:
Unless it's like Douglas Adams and the dolphins all over again and you interupted the python regius cloaking device experiments :8:
Watch for other signs of higher intelligence messin with ya - like the video recorder unexplainably recording the wrong channel or your younger relatives having to explain to you how to work your new phone.
It is through such things that the warnings of nostrildammit can be read.

Re: Eating their current fling?
Sorry I didnt read the whole other thread.
Did she weigh X amount, and then while missing weigh X + 500 and then now she weighs X again?
if so... whaaa? heheh
-
Re: Eating their current fling?
When I had weighed her she weighed X, after Tony disappeared, she weighed X + approx 500g.
Now she weighs approx X + 400g.
I'd have to go get the actual numbers but that is the approx.

Re: Eating their current fling?
that is definitely funky....
ah well, alls well that ends well :)

Re: Eating their current fling?
Glad you found him Wolfy and he's okay. Could he have possibly somehow got behind the tub (between the back of the tub and the inside wall of the rack)? Then when you pulled the rack out he slithered back in? That would be an awfully tight squeeze but I guess possible for a small male....whatever he did it's pretty freaky LOL.
