    I feel like an idiot..
Ok, so when I clean out my rat cages I use a big shop vac to suck out the old bedding.. sure beats taking all the rats out to clean the cages, then putting them back again.

Anyway.. I opened one of the cages.. and oh my gosh there's a baby self blue rat... the cutest little thing ever! I pick him up and am thinking of all the lovely blue babies I could breed from him as a sire then *SCHLOOP* into the vacuum he goes.. I held him too close to the darn wand.

I had just emptied the cansiter so it was empty meaning he hit the bottom of it hard enough to kill him.

    *sigh*

... Ouch ... That's one of those things you just play over in your mind and think "Why? Why did I do that?" ... I'm sorry :(

I don't blame you. In retrospect.. it was funny (though not for the rat) just a darn shame! I've wanted a self blue rat for ages but never could find/breed one.

Haha it's sort of like the opening credits on that one show with Nell Carter where she puts the vaccum in the fish tank on accident. Yeah, it's funny to us, but still I've done stupid **** like that and coulda kicked myself.

Too bad you aren't closer - got a self blue that (fingers crossed) should have babies in two weeks or so.

Well I have a hooded blue male that I was raising.. I'll see if I can get anything good out of him, but who knows.

My goal is to breed some dumbo rex self blues.. like my pet rat Renfield that I had before I bred feeders.

Okay, I didn't laugh until I read the post that said "I would be lying if I said I wasn't laughing right now..."
Then I did laugh. I'm really sorry for your little rat but hey, maybe mom will throw you another one!

Well it was weird.. this female has had litters before.. and every single one (that I can remember... and every other rat in this litter) were berkshires. Strange that this one was a self.. and blue! There weren't any other blue rats in that litter. Wondering if the rats are trading kids when I'm not looking..

    Thanks Bryan.

And really don't feel bad for laughing at me (feel bad for the rat if you wish)

He wasn't a pet.. at most he would have been a breeder, but a daddy of snake food is all.. he'd get fed off when he stopped doing his duty just like the rest of the rats. :)

It is sad. But at least he had an exciting journey before dying :(.

Ooh that reminds me I have another stupid story.. this one is even better!

Yeah.. so I have this REALLY cute rex blaze granitey looking female rat.. yeah, cool future breeder.

Mind you this was feeding night for the snakes.. I had finished feeding them and had come back to care for the rats. So.. I take the cute rat out and set her in the big plastic container I use for my gassing chamber.. (it's what I used to put my rats in as a holding bin when I cleaned their cages before mr vacuum rat eater came along) I didn't even THINK that is could possibly still have some Co2 in it from the feeding earlier that evening.. but yep it did.. yet another super cute future breeder bites the dust.

The shop vac I use is definitely strong enough to suck up any rat that will fit, and hard!.

Oh yes I've vacuumed other rats before (when I'm actually cleaning the cages). The big ones (adult males get vacuumed even) don't seem phased by it.

It will kill most mice and if it's empty any rat smaller than a 'small rat'.

Hmm I wonder as well if this stuff would be a natural aide in making sure your rodents don't have any little buggie friends on board. We used to by a DE based natural powder for our one Lab to keep her flea free, She had been bred in the Canadian Yukon where dog fleas do not exist so had no natural ability to handle fleas and would go nuts if even one got on her and was allergic to most flea treatments. The DE stuff really worked quite well.
