Next Herp
I have
1.0 Ball Python
0.1 Red Tail Boa
0.0.1 Albino Nelson's Milk Snake
0.0.1 Leopard Gecko
I want to get another snake, but don't know what to get. I like bigger snakes but not too big. Ten feet long is about my limit.
What are you suggestions?
Thanks
Trey

Re: Next Herp
Dumerils boa
blood python
..those are the medium sized boids that come to mind. Something that's nice and a bit smaller is a jungle carpet python (or a bredl's carpet python)

Re: Next Herp
A Borneo Short Tailed python- saw one at the show and fell in love.
See what appeals to you at your next local herp expo. Then you will also have someone knowledgeable on hand to answer questions.

Re: Next Herp
emerald tree boa the most beautiful snake out there!

Re: Next Herp
I went to the Atlanta Show this past weekend and have gotten snake fever bad!!! Tree boas are aggressive right? Are they mostly for looks or can they be handled a lot.
I also thought jungle carpet pythons where aggressive?
Thanks for your Input.
I will look into these.

Re: Next Herp
Hi Trey! I can't really recommend another species, since right now, I'm all about the balls! ;)
However, you mentioned the Atlanta show, so I'm assuming you must be somewhat local to me! I'm in Marietta and went to the show on Saturday. I'm hoping the show in January in Lawrenceville is a bit bigger than this one was!

Amazon tree boas are notoriously aggressive.
Some emerald tree boas are nice, many aren't. If they do bite you, they have extremely long curving teeth that can do a number on you.
Carpet python babies can be nippy, but they normally tame down quite easily as adults. My young JCP is quite docile.

Re: Next Herp
If you are looking for friendly I'm suprised you don't own a bearded dragon (I know it's not a snake), they are a herp that likes to be taken out of his cage and hang out. Most herp tolerate it to a point. Any way just thought I'd throw that out there your title is new herp.

Re: Next Herp
I have thought about bearded dragons.
Rabbernet
Have you ever been to the Dixie Reptile shows? I have been wanting to go and see if it was any good. I may go this weekend. I am also in Marietta and was at the show Saturday.
I have also looked at the Dumeril Boa. I really like them.
Also what is the Boa that is RTB but it only get about 6 feet long?
Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions.

Re: Next Herp
You can't go wrong with a carpet python. My coastals are awesome snakes to keep and one of my favorites in my collection. All the talk about them being aggressive and/or nippy is just people relaying bad experiences as a characteristic of the whole group. My coastals have never struck at me other than a SFE which was entirely my fault.
I just snapped some pics of my male coastal too....so look for the pics soon ;)

There are several dwarf localities of boa constrictor.. the hog island is one of the most popular. I have two.. great snakes.

Re: Next Herp
I too would have to suggest a carpet python. All tend to be a bit nippy at a young age but start to mellow out after about a year or so. I noticed that no one has suggested a West Papuan (Irian Jaya) carpet yet. These are the smaller of the morelia complex and get to a little over 5 ft. on males and about 6 ft. on females. However, I have seen some bigger ones.
But ultimately, you must find a herp that will keep your interest and is something you really like.

Re: Next Herp
I would suggest a male burmese. I have heard they are great, gentle and very cool looking. IMO It's great if you want a big snake.

Are you kidding?????
He said he was looking at something less than 10 ft. A few colubrids and a ball hardly qualify anyone to keep a snake that gets as big as a burm gets.

Re: Next Herp
Yeah.. even male burms can top 13' and 100lbs. Not a great choice at this time I would say. :)

Re: Next Herp
carpets are cool I kept stopping and oogling over some this last weekend. Amazon Tree Boas rock! The same can be said about their aggressiveness as was said above about people relaying bad experiences. I don't handle mine as its still very young and fragile but I have read seen others who handle theirs just as they would any other docile reptile. They are arboreal like GTP's but MUCH less expensive, I went with an ATB to get into arboreals rather than a GTP just due to the cost and not wanting inexperience to cause the loss of such an investment. Their crazy are colors/patterns with ATB's also.

Rusty (Rusty_Reptiles) has a male burm that is 17' long! :O All burmese should be considered giant snakes...even the males.

Added note: All giant snakes should be considered for the highly experienced and for a 2-man team.

Re: Next Herp
I would not be scared of a giant snake. The only problem would be housing it in an apartment complex that does not allow exotic pets. I also don't have any to help me with it. I looked at burmese pythons before. I will look further into the Carpet pythons. Also there is a show on Dec 2nd and 3rd here in Atlanta that I will be attending. At the moment I am leaning toward a 100% Het for Albino either in RTB or Ball Python.
Thanks for everyones help.

Re: Next Herp
Actual albino red tails are not terribly expensive (as far as morphs go) you might want to look around.
