    Freon removal...$150 bucks!!
What crap! I called a company today to get pricing on freon removal from this wine cooler I just picked up...$150 just to remove the freon...no wonder people just cut the lines....

bleh....it's just one of those moral things...cut the lines, pollute the earth..or do the right thing and bend over

Did you call around to some used appliances places (try the smaller family run ones).

Oh by the way, in case you don't have this link, here's a pretty nice one about making an incubator out of an old upright freezer.

Maybe there is a way you can drain it yourself into some kind of container, then find out where you can legally dispose of it?

Just a quick followup. Called my favorite local used appliance place. They aren't certified for freon removal but referred me to a local refrigeration company. They will come to the house, safely and legally remove the freon, sticker the freezer to indicate it's now freon free (pink sticker)....all for $69.00. I'd say call around some more to any company listed under "Refrigerators & Freezers - Repair and Service" listed in your Yellow Pages for quotes.

Isn't the real question if the inaccurate thermometer and weight is worth $150 ? :)

Rap, freon is a gas so I would think very hard to drain and contain like that. If it gets into your eyes for instance it can blind you so doing it yourself is possible but risky (see link I posted in previous post). Personally if I can find a free old upright freezer I think we'll just spend the $69.00 bucks and call it good.

Brian said you cant use the thermometer that came with it anyway because a wine cooler cools not heats....I dont know..
But yes we just had the fridge dropped off here...we payed $35 for it and another $20 for them to drop it off for me.
So I am going to start calling around ASAP about getting the freon out.

nate, my company charges 85.00/hr. plus parts and material for hvac work for one man.

if you are worried about the environment thing, factories and the nasa program do 100 times the damage to the atmosphere as freon! alot of it is political bs, large factories are allowed to pollute daily while home owners have to pay more for environmentally friendly service.

hey call an auto repair place, they usually have freon draining tanks and should do it for fairly cheap, its not a hard job, just like deflating a tire.

A friend who was moving out of state sold me an incubator he made out of an old Coca Cola Display/Vending fridge. He put in 10" Flexwatt tape along the back and computer fan from radio shack. He didn't use the existing fan because it was too strong and it cooled the unit, now it works great. Its a good size and you can look in without opening it up. He found it online cheap and it worked at the time, find a broken one maybe even cheaper? He ripped out all the existing compressor and stuff so it would be lighter and wouldn't leak.

I know exaclty how you feel on this issue, I think everyone has seen money turn someone into an idiot or an *******. Everyone in the world wants to make a dime off of someone...horrible.

And on the subject, I called around here in found that a couple places will come out and do it for $79.

And I do understand why you want it to be removed safely... I'm a tree-hugger so I like to think that I'm doing my little part in the world. It is aweful when you think about this... imagine if every person drained the freon into there lawns instead of getting it removed by a professional....a little scary if you ask me.
I like to think I could blame someone else (Nasa..factories etc.) when my child gets cancer from drinking the water... but who wants to blame themselves?
So yes I will be getting a pro. to come out and do it....just for the peace of mind.

Quit the tree hugging and drain that bad boy yourself. Then go out to Staples and get yourself a pink sticker. Done!

Seriously, that is a lot of money to spend on freon removal.

I have to agree with ya. Call me a tree hugger cause the earth is my home. If I don't to ruin it for everyone else, I need to be responsible and take care of things by a professional.

You kill me! But yes, that is alot of cash. My rule of thumb...repairs and service should not cost more then the stinking amount you paid for something.
One place quoted me $170..I almost choked and died when he said that...being that every other place had said $79 flat.

You might want to tell that to big business. They are the ones spewing black smoke from the factories, spilling oil in the water and generally polluting the crap out of this world. If you think that a little freon or some Jersey girl's can of Aquanet (sorry Jersey chicks) is going to make a difference, I think you aren't seeing the big picture. There are some interesting articles out there to read.

Oh trust me I know. But even the lil things matter. If you don't start out somewhere, then you never started at all. I wish they could do something with these companies. But again, money over life rules all. Funny enough I learned about pollution from Godzilla movies when I was a lil kid. It's hard for me to read about what things do to the ecosystem and people in general.

It's a huge mess. My first job was for a guy across the street from me who painted cars. I look back now and think of all the super toxic crap I had in my hands. And all the crap he dumped out. And this is just one guy out of million who do this.

To bad you don't live up here in No Va I could get one of my HVAC guys to do it for a few bucks which leads me to the suggestion of if you know any HVAC or auto mech who may do it on the side for you for a whole lot less or if you see some guys at the local 7-11, quickstop , or whatever they call them down there and see if they wouldn't want to do it on the side.

Due to the gov't regs only some places/people can do it legally so business feel that is a great reason to overcharge.

If for some reason you decide to do it yourself, keep it to yourself and tell NO ONE because the fines for that a fairly steep.
