    Should the substrate or.....
Should the substrate or the plastic at the bottom of the tub be 90-94 on the hot side? The substrate(aspen) is at 92.6 according to my temp gun while the plastic at the bottom of the tub is 106.9. Just trying to get the temps right before she arrives this week or next.

The plastic should be what you check..not the top of the bedding.

Grrrr. I need a new dimmer now. I was thinking the Hi/med/lo settings on the dimmer would be ok but thats the temps on Low!!

    What she said! :P

You don't want the snake moving the Aspen out of the way and getting burns on that hot plastic...

Get a thermostat--much more reliable and less worry too. Totally worth the money IMO.

I'll see. I really like my dimmer now and this is just temperary aswell. I don't have $70 on hand to send out for a thermostat right now. Dimmers have never let me down and they are cheap and easy to make.

Its just a matter of time before it fails and something catastrophic happens. This goes back to doing what is right for our animals regardless of the cost. If you don't have $70 for a tstat right now, what happens when your snake gets burned and you need a $200 vet visit?

I have the money in the bank but I don't see a need for a $70 thermostat now. Once I get my rack done then ya. I'll have my flex and thermostat ordered. For a couple few months, I think a dimmer will be fine. I have been using dimmers for over a year with NO problems at all

I don't want you guys to think I don't care about my animals I just like the "If its not broke, don't fix it rule". When I do the rack, I will go all out and get a therm for sure
