And he will be my friend.....
Apparently Riordan the 06 YB male thinks rat fuzzies make really cool friends!

On the other hand he loves mice in a whole "other" way - apparently we are now up to 3 BP's (and 1 milksnake) that think mice are way tastier than rats LOL.
Re: And he will be my friend.....
ha...i hate it when that happens.
Re: And he will be my friend.....
Awwww....he'll name him George! :P Cute picture!
Re: And he will be my friend.....
I will call him squishy and he will be my squishy.
Re: And he will be my friend.....
Sometimes they just won't listen, when you tell them not to play with their food. Cute picture!!!
Re: And he will be my friend.....
At the rate I'm going and with three more females coming in from Robin soon (who are all mouse eaters though one will eat anything that moves so maybe she'll go for one of my yummy rats)...well I think I'm going to have to breed dang stanky mice. Either that or just start an account at the local pet store cuz some of the 05 mouse eating girls are snarfing multiple mice like crazy. LOL

Leeloo will eat rats, she doesn't care - as long as it's warm and moving - it's Fooooooooddd!!!! Gimme more!!!!! I've fed her a rat before and her feeding response is awesome!
Godiva reportedly ate f/t rats at Will's place when I wasn't sure of her sex and sent her back to him just to be sure (she's a tweener :P ), but I haven't tried them on her - and she is a shy eater (doesn't like an audience).
Sahara - I've not tried rats on - but I suspect she'll do just fine on them (watch her prove me wrong)! LOL
Very cute picture of your little man! Priceless!
Re: And he will be my friend.....
jo, try scenting rats with mice bedding. or you could probably trade rats for mice at stores?
vaughn
Re: And he will be my friend.....
thankfully adam is making sure all of my new snakes are eating rats for me... so i should be able to just stuff them full of food with no problems LOL
i like vaughn's idea jo... perhaps try that first?
Re: And he will be my friend.....
That's weird Jo. He was eating rats for me before I sent him to you. Hmmmmm....I guess just feed him what he will take for now? lol. I wish I could help. Try heating the rat up a little warmer than it usually would be. Maybe that would induce a feeding response?
Re: And he will be my friend.....
Also this time of year if the snake is getting Twitter Pated he might be slowing down on the food.

I'm here to testify that that works wonders on switching from mice to rats. My Axanthic male didn't eat for three months when I first got him... and supposedly he was eating rats before shipping...
I fed him a mouse, and he took it like a champ... Tried a rat fuzzy the following week, no go... So he didn't eat for four more weeks.... as I was stuborn about letting him have too many mice... Gave him another mouse because I was worried about him not eating.... snatched it up no problem... Then on "accident" the next week, I put the rat pups in the same critter keeper that I had the mice and the unchanged bedding in... I introduced the pup and within seconds, he snatched the rat, and has been on rats ever since.
I have also heard of people that put a tiny pinch of soiled mouse bedding in the snake's tub prior to feeding.
Re: And he will be my friend.....
I have heard the same thing about the dirty mouse/rat/ gerbil bedding. I've heard to put it in 10-15 minutes before the food item to get them sniffing and looking. Then drop them in. They say gerbil bedding is best
Re: And he will be my friend.....
hahaha. thats so cute. did he eventually eat it?
Re: And he will be my friend.....
lol; I have seen that before. It is great when they constrict it, and then leave it there like a throw pillow; usually though I will leave the prey in overnite (making sure it is completely dead) and it'll be gone..

We're trying that idea with the other mouse eaters Vaughn, unfortunately no luck yet. We've even picked out pure white rat pups the exact size of adult white mice which we bought live, let the little buggers run about in with the mice but nada so far on Ailish and Muirne. Ailish checks the rat pups out but decides nah it's not a mouse but she's thinking about it. Muirne gets one sniff of the rat with mouse stank on it, hisses and hides her face in her coils till we take it away (then of course snarfs down the mouse with rat stank on it...geesh! LMAO) We'll keep trying every other feed though as it's a great idea and may work. It's no biggie, I'll either breed mice or as you say trade spare rats for mice. Right now we don't have a lot of spare rats as I had a male rat come up infertile and he threw my whole rat litter schedule to hell and back.
Umm for the rest of you all...that's a live rat fuzzy cuddled up happy as heck with Riordan (who said rat fuzzies were all that smart LOL), not a dead one or a thawed f/t one. After awhile when we realized Riordan was unimpressed we popped the little sausage back in with his mother. The important thing though is Riordan did eat a lovely mouse meal and is quite contentedly curled up in his warm hide and after all that's the important thing...not what he ate but that he ate first time up to bat in his new home.
Re: And he will be my friend.....
hmmm, perhaps ask adam about how he switches them jo... cause he told me he'll get our new babies eating whatever i want them to eat before he ships them out! we've chosen to go with ratties... as we'd rather breed them than mice.
Re: And he will be my friend.....
Always a good idea Aleesha. In the end though really it's more funny than anything and Mike and I could care less what they eat as long as they eat an appropriate amount weekly to be in top shape. I don't suppose Riordan got the message anyways when I removed the little live rat fuzzie and said "we do NOT make pets from our food source ya silly snakers!" LOL
