    New rat rack
This thing just makes life easier. Food hopper and automatic watering is the way to go if you plan on raising your own rodents.

Now THAT explains it! Now where can I find someone to barter my charm and wit with? Although now that I think of it, I probably wouldn't be able to get much in the deal... :psychotic :picknose:

    Jamie,

Are those tubs the ones from Lowes, Home Depot, or somewhere else?

I am thinking about a rat rack now, and the tubs at home depot looked sturdier, but the braces they have in the lip look like they would "hang up" on the wood rails .....

    Neil,

Those are the MacCourt Products model # AT2606 concrete mixing tubs from Lowes. They seemed really cheap and breakable but they are pretty sturdy and slide well in the rack. I know others recommend scrapping the mixing tub idea and using the jumbo (or large, i am not sure) Van Ness cat litter pans. They have a similar footprint but take up less space because they dont have sloped sides. Hope this helps!

OK thanks, I was worried about the ones from Lowes because of no bracing, but looks like they are working fine.

When I started this I told myself there was no way I was going to start breeding rats ... but our biggest local supplier here had water/swamp cooler problem this summer and is out of business. Rats are getting harder to come by and more expensive all time.

The water is gravity fed through the black tubing to sippers in each tub. The rats lick at the sipper and water comes out. Basically, its that easy

I originally bought the tubs from Home Depot, they used to have excellent tubs. In the middle of building my own and selling racks they switched to the newer (terrible) tubs. The new ones have little plastic reinforcements that stick out on the edges. Yes, they do get caught up when sliding tubs in and out. I even tried trimming of the pieces of plastic sticking out and they still "catch" every time you slide them in. I since have quit building and selling rat racks, until I can find better tubs. I can only find "flimsy" tubs everywhere I look, maybe I was just spoiled with the other ones.

Lookin' good Jamie! Now you just need 5 or 6 more racks just like it! :D

I just bought a bunch more tubs from home depot for a couple more rat racks, adn to replace a couple chewed tubs. They are a different brand than the ones I originally bought a while ago, but seem to be the same exact mold, and the same exact thickness of material. I haven't had any problems using them interchangeably with the old ones. I'm not sure off hand what brand they are, or if they will continue to carry these, but I know they are thicker than the ones at Lowes. Maybe I should go stock up while I still can.....

I've seen these as well. Do they have weird ridges along the bottom that make them not slide as well?

I noticed my original smaller tubs from Hd had a weak spot, a hole on one side for a hook or something, but rats would get a start on that and chew holes.

But then recently I've had rats chew through solid plastic without a starter hole, so it seems hit or miss.

The tubs that Home Depot used to sell are available at Ace Hardware. They have the ACE logo on the side, and they charge extra for the logo. About $8.50 each.

    Jamie,
The pics I posted are of a pregnant female I have. About a month ago, I went to my local reptile store and bought some feeders. She was included. She had a major nose rub, and didn't have any hair on most of her face. But I liked her coloration, so I decided to keep her as a breeder. The lightning bolt was a very pleasant surprise when her facial hair grew back in! I'm really looking forward to seeing her babies!

Please post pics of yours when you can!
